Thanks Sanjay. The girls like the photo. (I always ask my girl's permission if I can post a photo of them.)

This picture was taken at a house we rented in the black hills of SD for a week. Each morning, I'd get up very early and go out photographing with my 4x5, and I did get a couple of ok pictures doing that, but I took the best picture of the trip with my dslr after coming back to the cabin after an early morning of LF photography.

A few shots from my old university and their production of the classic opera "Don Giovanni" (taken during a dress rehearsal).

All taken with a Nikon D700, Sigma 300mm f/2.8, and SB-800 flash on a bracket. Exposure was 1/250, f/2.8, ISO 1600, and full-power flash pops. It's a pretty big auditorium; this was the first time I've really gotten decent exposures in there.

Doing some more messing around with some more off camera flash. I may retake this photo when I get new lenses put in my sunglasses so they have a cleaner look to them. I think a polarizer would help some too. I'd like to get rid of the stray light in the lenses of the glasses, and have the mouth totally washed out. Taken using a LumoPro LP160

Cool cows. I hope Sauvie Island isnt too far from the mainland because the cost of barging them to the steak house could be very high, as it is for Chatham islanders. Barging in feed too. Luckily my cows are on a big island and when they go, its to be preserved forever by McDonalds.

Leland,

That 165/2.8 looks fantastic! I wasn't aware it exists, but I'm intrigued!

And they are cheap, too.

But the lens I'd love to have on my Pentax 6x7 is a Zeiss Jena 180mm f/2.8 Sonnar. I have used that lens extensively for portrait work on 6x6 (both at the cheap end with a Kiev 60 and at the uncheap end with an Exakta 66), and also (adapted) on a Pentax 645. My wife can pick out pictures made with this lens from a stack of similar photos made with a range of lenses. This lens has the smoothest and creamiest rendering of any lens I've ever used.

Is the 165/2.8 as good? It's not an expensive experiment. My guess is that it does not.

Leland,

That 165/2.8 looks fantastic! I wasn't aware it exists, but I'm intrigued!

The 165 f2.8 is my "people" lens, as it's longer than a normal but still gives a good field of view, even when working relatively close. It's also fast, which is great for a people lens as it allows the background to go way out of focus. Depth of field is also perfect for people. I tend to shoot it 2.8-5.6 for people, but prefer the wider aperture whenever practical. In open shade, where I tend to shoot, this is very easy to do. It's not only faster than my 165 f4 leaf shutter lens, but it's smaller as well, making it ergonomically superior.

Here are some other examples. Needless to say, such things as landscape, still life, and architecture are not my primary photographic interests.

BTW, if you like portraits you may want to also consider the 120 soft focus lens.

Thomas

Thanks, I couldn't remember.

I actually don't like soft focus lenses. My eyes are bad enough, and I shoot at large enough apertures that soft focus is totally unnecessary. :-)

And that one is shift-only--no tilt. I acquired one in deeply battle-scarred condition recently, and need to try it out. First look suggests a nice lens, but not really short enough to real architecture work.

I have a Ukrainian Arsat 55mm f/4.5 PCS (shift) lens that would cover 6x7 handily. But while some of the Arsenal lenses have been converted to P67 ex-factory, I've never seen it done with the 55. I can adapt it to the Pentax 645 easily. I'm saving all that stuff in case a Lotto ticket hits and I get a 645D. I have shift lenses in 45 and 55mm for the Pentacon Six mount, and in 75mm for the P67 mount. All three are easily adaptable to P645.

Rick "who has resisted this lens out of fear of the comparison" Denney

The Sonnar sounds luscious, as well! It's a really great time to buy MF, I think.

Yesterday I stopped in to the local Goodwill and left with a bag of cameras. I found a Minolta SRT 101 with a 135mm f/3.5-- very compact, with a collapsible hood-- an Ansco Rediflex 620 box camera, an Agfa Clipper PD16 (didn't realize it uses 116 film), a Kodak Pony 135mm in mint condition w/case, and a Pentax pc35af. I ran a short roll through the Minolta last night, and have film in the others (except the Clipper) awaiting their test runs. Here's one from the short roll:

Hi Bryan,

It was a good day! I've been lucky before. I bought my XD11 w/58mm f/1.2 for $10, paid $30 for a Minolta 17mm f/4, $1 ea for my Chinon Bellami and Olympus XA, $25 for a Pentax Digital Spot Meter, and the list goes on. I've had more days when I found nothing but POS P&Ss, too. Thanks for the compliment! Julia makes it easy;)

I'll have to go back and look in my files; I said this was Reala, but I'm not so sure--it was nine years ago, after all. I do know it was one of the very few times I had a full crew to work with. We had a dynamite makeup artist, and there were two guys holding big white panels as reflectors. And it was chilly, probably around 50 degrees, but to her credit the model did not complain.

I'm more likely to shoot "without a net," with just me, the model, and sometimes a single assistant to haul around the heavy stuff. From February of 2003... Pentax 67II and 165mm.

Jay,

I wasn't familiar with it either. It is a Chinese-made KW Pilot 6 knock-off if I remember correctly. Only has four shutter speeds (200, 100, 60 & 30 ) plus bulb. But those are focal plane shutter speeds so it allowed me to rig up an old enlarging lens for tilt-shift fun. (See below). I've looked to get my own but they are scarce. Luckily my friend will let me borrow his any time.

Hi Jonathan,

I looked it up, and it sounds very interesting. The mirror is also the shutter, if I understand correctly? Which limits the shutter speeds, but not unreasonably so-- I've certainly worked with less! And the lens mount is M39? I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to adapt just about any kind of lens one wanted to mount, with a little ingenuity. All for the above at less than $100 could make for a lot of fun!

Jay,

Indeed, the mirror is the shutter. (Focal plane? Who was I kidding?) Limiting, yes, but I find limits to be more rewarding than frustrating these days. I used an M39 screw mount extension tube as the "adapter" for my tilt/swing experiments.

I would recommend the camera for playing around. It's like a Holga on steroids. The lens it comes with has its own charms. Andrew Moxom (who posts here, I believe) mounted one on his Hasselblad: https://secure.flickr.com/photos/32065742@N06/4988471697/

Zaitz,

Thanks. Old camera + old film = old look. Sadly, there is probably an Instagram filter for this now!

Jonathan

There is for sure a filter out there. Nik SilverEfex does a good job at film emulation, so does AlienSkin Exposure. But it doesn't do that good a job. Plus it takes a good image to start with!

I've been working on a series where I "build" a large format negative. I scrape off the emulsion of the 5x7 to fit the smaller negatives. I then laminate them together. In printing, the image area is bleached and toned. The scratches are from the chiseling process.

Austin,

That RV looks great. Amazingly sharp. Beautiful detail.

Jay,

Thanks. I love these old faux TLRs. Below is one taken with a Spartus Full-Vue. No focus, no exposure controls. Hard to beat for pure photographic fun. I guess I find these point-and-shoot TLRs a nice counterpoint to the endless futzing I do with large format cameras.

Great cat by the way.

A foggy night last month around three A.M. I went out in the neighborhood with a tripod and my trusty focus-free Kinoflex TLR.

My wife woke up that night when I was out, saw that the car was still there and that all my LF gear was untouched and freaked out with worry. I hated to worry her, but the fact that she spot-checked the LF equipment cases before worrying is endearing. If the LF stuff had been gone she would have concluded I was out on one of my late night expeditions. Little did she know I was out using one of my small cameras!

Shot on ten year expired Velvia 100F. Exposures were 30 sec. @ f/8.

I've just found my wife's old SLR somewhere stashed in a box. I've got me some 35mm film and started to shoot. It's a Revueflex AC2 with a 50mm lens. The shutter didn't work, so I boldly opened the bottom. A tiny spring was broken. I managed to fix it (for now). The shutter works but I can cock the film more than ones. I've got a 36 take roll in it right now. As soon as this one is full, I'm going to give the fixing another try.
Pictures wil follow at a later date. Meanwhile I'm going to browse thrue this thread.

Great work here, way too much to comment individually at this hour before work!

Speaking of box cameras and "faux TLRs" my fiance got me a Kodak Duaflex IV for Christmas. It's loaded with a spool-modified 620-compatible roll of T-Max 100 now, but it's the first roll I've put through it so no results yet.

Here's another from our week in New Orleans last summer, I was struck by this flower peeking through this iron fence.

Shot on 120 FP4+, Yashicamat 124, exposure unrecorded.

Developed in D76 1+1, printed on Ilford Multigrade Warm Tone paper developed in Ilford Warm Tone developer. This one is untoned, straight scan of the print.

I have some Efke IR in 120 that I will use in my Rollei. I thought of using it in the RB67, but I would rather use it in either a rangefinder or TLR. I have an IR filter for the Rollei, I don't want to spend the big buck$ for a 77mm filter for the RB.

Orange is just as effective with that film, due to it's response curve, if you have one of those.

I already have the R72 IR filter for the other lenses, so I would rather use them, beside, it is too hard to focus, then attach the filter and try and take the photo. With the Leica and the Rollei, I am not looking through the filter to focus and or frame the subject. :) It's enough of a problem remembering to take off the lens cap. I don't want to have to lose a filter. I have a 77mm red 25, but it doesn't filter out all the visible light.

Very nice Austin. What film and developer for that outdoor shot through the window? Very nice detail over that indoor/outdoor range.

Thanks Roger.

The film was Tri-X, developed at my friendly neighborhood lab. :) I metered for the interior so the outside was a bit overexposed, but not so bad that I couldn't bring it back down on the computer. Also, I lowered the contrast in the interior to save all the detail I could and make the window stand out more.

I actually shot this with the big camera as well, closer to the window (with its shape all corrected and everything) but I like this version better. Something about those drawers I think, and also the way the window is sort of floating there like a little screen.

Cheers!

14-Feb-2012, 14:09
Ah, ok, digital aka "black magic" to lower interior contrast and preserve the highlights and shadows. ;)

Can also be done in the darkroom of course, but this kind of thing can be harder. Print the inside with a lower contrast filter and then burn down the window area with a normal (or so) filter. Depending on the range it could be hard to keep the burn from showing, or not.

So no magic compensating potion in the darkroom bottle, drat!

Thanks Peter. I'd like to go back and see what sort of shape she's in, but unfortunately for the series, I'm up in Portland now. Perhaps a road trip is in order (if only it was that easy...).

Wow, Peter, it looks painted; very vivid and beautiful scene.

It certainly does.

Now, some technical details please. You can't just post a photo like that and not say how it was done. Velvia? Digital? Photoshop saturation slider added?

What a terrific series, Austin!

+1 (as always for Austin's stuff, it seems.)

Roger, for the buffalo picture I used my Nikon D200 with a 135mm lens. I rarely use saturation or vibrance sliders, and when I do, it's usually to tone down a specific color. It's not that I'm against upping saturation, but I prefer more control. I adjusted saturation through the use of layers and masks in LAB mode, ala Dan Margulis.

There's buffalo in WI? That's pretty darn cool.

There are buffalo in Wisconsin, but only on farms or in zoos. The picture was taken in the South Dakota Bad Lands.

I noticed that a couple of folks have posted nudes, so I'll give it a shot. Pentax 67ii with 165mm f2.8. I think this is Plus X. Hard to remember--I'm in the process of rescanning some older negatives, and these are two that I will be getting to soon.

Scanned a few color (RA4) prints I made awhile back.

These two were taken 12 years ago (the Boys were two years old). Downtown San Francisco while we were getting the passport for one of the boys before his Mom was taking him to Australia.

And one of a fellow photographer (using a 4x5) on the Oregon Coast. I think that he was thinking why in the heck I had the camera turned 45 degrees.

Thanks, Peter (and Tom),

Why be normal?! I have a couple more I have done that way. One is of Half Dome from the Sentinal Bridge -- one has to do something a little different as the bridge gets jammed with other photographers every evening! Don't think I have a copy of that around (gave it to my parents). The other is a B&W of the Arcata Plaza -- one of these days I'll scan that puppy. But I suppose it can be over-used and be a bit of a gimmick.

From whence cometh the avatar:

I was studying at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston quite a few years ago. It was my first year there and I decided to work on a self-portrait assignment in my studio apartment in the middle of winter. I had everything I needed:

Nikon F3? Check. MD-4 motor drive? Check. Tripod? Check. Bed sheets taped to the walls for contrasting backdrop? Check. Single bare bulb light source? Check. Black turtleneck? Check. Pretentious "artiste" attitude? Check. Twenty foot air bulb cable release? Check.

I then proceeded to strike various poses, all serious, all based on what I "thought" a pose should be. Somehow in the midst of this posturing I managed to stumble on the bulb as I pressed it with my foot and fell swiftly to the floor. Unbeknownst to me the motor drive managed to capture this ignominy in its full glory. When I contract printed the roll I laughed at the contrast between my controlled self and my falling self, preferring the unpremeditated version. In a thousand tries I doubt I could have caught such an image on purpose.

Two more from The Ranch, an old unoccupied farm house. It was recently the site of a low budget horror movie.

Need I mention that this is not exactly the safest part of town? Very old (2000) TMY-400 120, 105mm lens on Horseman VH-R.

Looks abandoned, not unsafe necessarily. Lots of old buildings like that back in my hometown area in very safe rural areas. But we'll take your word for that part. ;) Nice image of decay there.

I've shot up the rest of my TMY from 1997 and they seem to print ok. Base fog to be sure (it wasn't frozen or refrigerated, just loaded in holders then abandoned) but it seems to print through ok.
