I'm begining to work with a scanner for the first time. I shoot in 4x5 and 8x10. What is the case for, or against scanning Negatives directly on the scanner's glass, using the Epson Neg holders or some other Neg holders?

Easy ... dump the (rubbish) Epson efforts and get hold of some BetterScanning holders with AN glass - superb!

Another vote for BetterScanning - but note that they do not make a holder in 8x10 size.

See http://www.betterscanning.com:

"An infinitely variable height mounting station that can be adapted to allow you to scan pieces of film from slightly larger than 5x7 to 110 Instamatic format and smaller! "

Where would you get those holders? Website, etc.
Thanks,
Don

Whats the difference between betterscanning and epson ones? Are the betterscanning ones sharper or something? or are they just more user friendly? are the results extremely noticeable?

I bought the better scanning kit believing that they would work for 8x10 which as Ken states they do not.
Unless you plan on wet scanning there is no advantage over the scanning frames supplied with the V750

1) No more Newton's Rings

2) Adjustable focus, so you can get the most out of the scanner. See http://www.betterscanning.com/scanning/vb_advantage.html

There is: film flatness.

That little bit of film sagging you may get from a 4x5 in the Epson holder still in my opinion is to prefer instead of a layer of glass. If taping to the underside of the betterscanning glass there will be the same film sagging.
Only if the negative format is somewhere bewteen the 4x5 and perhaps a WP do i find any advange in the Betterscanning kit.

I did several tests with the 2 holders, without noticing a marked difference for the Epson or the BS  . I came back to the Epson holders, because it is easier to use and there is less glass. It is possible to elevate the Epson with a piece of cartonboard under the small plastic feet.

Anyway, an used Imacon 848 is on the way... :D

Not if you tape it correctly and get good cross-wise tension.
