if I just lay the film on the scanner, it will generate a lot of newton rings. what are the solutions? I can think of two solutions
1. anti newton ring glass
2. make a frame that put the film a few 1/8 of inches above the glass.
which way works better?

There's a third option - wet mount directly on the bed (with all its risks). I don't think the frame idea is a good one as the lens taking scans off the bed is focused at the bed level. The other scanning area above the bed is not big enough for 8x10 scans.

Anti-newton spray...

What resolution are you intending to scan at? Up to about 1200 or so, I don't think you will see a sharpness difference between wet mounting and A-N spray.

How does the wet mount work? I checked betterscanning website, they only provide wet mount upto 5X7 size.

No spray, no spray

You need a piece of anti-newton ring glass. Please film base side down, and then the glass a top the emulsion side.

Here's where I got my glass:

http://www.fpointinc.com/glass.htm

Wet mounting is fine up to 5x7 on the V700 and V750, but larger film can not fit on the wet mount holder. Thus a huge mess on the scanner.

Get a thick piece of anti-newton ring glass.

I bought ANR glass for 8x10 scans from betterscanning.com.

Yes spray.

It works better than AN glass in my experience. Plus, it gives you the option for how much to put on, etc., whereas AN glass doesn't give you the option for how strong the impact is to the image.

Wet mount is clearly better, but short of that, I don't think that AN glass is superior to AN spray.

Try wet mounting- it woorks great for me with 8X10 on my 4990. Look at scanscience.com or betterscanning.com for supplies.

FWIW, I have never gotten the rings scanning 8x10 negs on the V700. What am I doing wrong?

How about flippping film over so the emulsion is down? Then just flip in photoshop. That's what I do with my 4990.

I might be wrong (and just seeing things), but I think I've noticed that not all films produce the same ammount of the effect as others do.

I believe the rings are a function on the smoothness of the surfaces in contact and the pressure (especially uneven pressure) put on those surfaces. Any changes in these will change the amount of rings.

I have gotten rings in a contact printing frame, but the rings reduced significantly when I reduced the amount of pressure (took some spacing material out of the frame.

Back when I scanned 8x10 b&w negatives on my 4990, that's what I did too and it worked fine, no rings.
