View Full Version : What fits into a compur 2?

I took a chance on a Compur 2 on eBay with the intention of replacing the dead one on my 270 Tele-Xenar. It turned up today but unfortunately is the wrong size, 50mm not 46mm (rough measurements). The shutter works fine, so rather than just resell it I thought I might find some cells to go in it.

It is marked for f4.5 max aperture, so was probably some sort of Tessar originally and as it is a little too small for the cells of a 210/4.5 Xenar that I have, I'm guessing that maybe it was a 180 Xenar. Is anybody aware of any other lenses that use this size shutter?

I've got a 14" artar in a Compur 2. But IIRC there are a number of different Compur 2s in slightly different sizes. SKGrimes (http://www.skgrimes.com/compur/index.htm) might be a useful reference for that. From his table at the bottom of that web page, it looks like you've got a rare variant of an already rare shutter.

Schneider's Compur II shutters were basically all the same type - see measurements in the thread that is linked to in my signature. There's Compounds at the top, and the Compur II's a few posts farther down.

If it came off a 180/4.5 Xenar it should be a Compur 2-6/II

The 240/5.6 Symmar and the 165/6.8 Angulon both take Compur 2-/5/II

IIRC my 14" APO Artar lives in a compur dial set #2

Dial set Compur 2's may be the same as newer Compur 2's, but they may also be slightly different. Like my Xenar Typ D 150mm f:3.5 - it's in a dial-set Compur with similar size but different threads from a newer Compur 2.

I have a 10" Goerz Gotar that came in a dial set Compur 2.

Paul,

Probably a 180mm Xenar as you stated. The Compur #2 opening for the Xenar were bigger than the ones that the 240mm convertible Symmar came in, and are more desirable for housing larger lenses like the 14" Artar or in my case, a custom mounted 360mm f:9 Kowa.

Cheers,

Steve

The Xenar f/4.5 180mm was aviable in Compound #II 6 and Compur #2 and #3. But the Symmar 240mm in Compound #II 5 and Compur 2, in the same shutters as the Xenotar f/2.8 150mm.

Thanks everyone for the information. From Ole's charts it looks like the 270 Tele-Xenar needs a replacement Compur 2-5, while the one I bought is a Compur 2-6. Both are rimset Compurs by the way. Looks like it is going to sit with the Copal 3s in the "someday my cells will come" category.
