Hi All,

Hopefully, all PNW photographers know by now that our first meeting is coming right up in Newport, Oregon, next weekend, 9/12 and 13. We could really use a head count, so let us know if you're coming on our Groups thread

Here's the agenda:

Saturday, September 13 2008

7:30 am Meet at The Coffee House, 156 SW Bay Blvd for shooting at the docks by 8-8:30am

Lunch - Break apart to go individual/small groups way

1:30pm meet at Newport Visual Art Center
777 NW Beach Drive Newport, Oregon 97365

1) Introductions

2) Demonstrations:

a) Carbon printing with Vaughn Hutchins. Vaughn has been photographing for 30 years. He had the pleasure of assisting at Friends of Photography workshops for many years. Since 1991 he has taken care of the Humboldt State University's Art Department teaching darkroom. He taught himself carbon printing from an article in View Camera Magazine in 1992, and then
platinum printing in 1997 when his triplet boys were born. His work can be seen at the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite and Arcata Artisans Gallery in Arcata, CA.

b) Platinum/Palladium printing with Rich Bergeman. I've been shooting large format since mid-1980s after I was bequeathed a vintage 1900s wooden 8x10. I gradually left silver printing and now work exclusively in pt/pd since 1999. I have exhibited mostly around the northwest over the past 20+ years. A retrospective exhibit coming up in Corvallis in October at the Pegasus
gallery.

Photographic Opportunities:

5pm meet in the South Jetty parking lot for a demonstration of Ultra Large Format View Camera techniques by Don W. Nelson. Don has been actively making images since 1976. He switched to Large Format 8x10 in 1987, and ULF 12x20/7x17 in 1995. While originally making images in Silver, since 1993 he’s been using Pt/Pd, Printing out paper and has done some cyanotypes. Don
has had several shows in Scottsdale/Chandler Az during the 1990’s but hasn’t been actively showing work since then.

Shooting opportunities in the immediate vicinity include the
bridge, docks at the marina; the South Jetty dunes and the estuary trail at the Hatfield Marine Science Center down the street. Nearby by car is South Beach State Park to the south, and the old Yaquina Bay Lighthouse on the north side of the bridge.

8pm, Dinner: Rogue Brewery, 720 SW Bay Blvd Newport, OR 97365
(541) 867-3660, is fun and the tables can be pulled together. The prices are as good as you get in Newport and it's certainly iconic. Good parking and more photography on the harbor, bridge, dock.

Sunday, September 14 2008

8am or as late as individuals want meet at Seal Rock. Carpooling would be helpful and appreciated!

10am meet at the Newport Visual Arts Center

Portfolio sharing: Everyone is welcome to bring prints to share with the group for commits and thoughts. Each person is limited to share 7 prints but you can bring more and share on an individual basis. Each person has 7 minutes to show work. Robert Brummitt of Portland Photographers Forum will MC and timekeeper. Robert has been the president of PPF for over 10 years; the non-profit photography group has grown under his watch from 25 members to over 70. Robert is primary a color photographer, uses large format, medium and 35mm.

1) Demonstrations:

a) Van Dyke Brown printing with Jeannette Altmann of Washington State University, Vancouver. Jeannette began working in alternative processes in 2003 and has gotten continually out of hand ever since. She has been smitten with the warm brown of the Van Dyke Brown print ever since she first came across it in Jan Arnow's Handbook of Alternative Processes. Like
cyanotype, it is simple and gratifying, but offers are more believable and rich rendering of human skin then other processes.

b) Handcrafted silver gelatin emulsion with Denise Ross. Denise has been a photographer for thirty years, working with almost every format and process known. For the last two years she has put all her efforts into rediscovering the art and science of silver gelatin papers and dry plate. Denise is the editor of The Light Farm, a website devoted to the subject.

Time to say good-bye.
