durst l1200

i'm a new member so please forgive me if this is an old thread...

i've got a durst laborator L1200 enlarger with an expired transformer.
i'm told that it's possible to use something like a tv or radio transformer but it's all too technical for me. i need to convert a uk mains upply to run a 275w 24v halogen bulb.

any advice would be appreciated because the only alternative appears to be to dig a very large hole in the garden and mutter a few appropriate words.

The auction site sometimes turns up enlarger power supplies. Anything supplying 24V at 275W (11.5A or more) will do the trick. My L1200 is run from a power supply intended for a De Vere 504. My L1200 is specified for a 200W or 250W lamp - didn't know there was a 275W lamp.

Ok, you've given us the broad picture but a picture would be worth a thousand words. There are more than one "transformer" for the L 1200 so lets use the model number of the unit. If you're heading towards a DIY solution from miscelaneous alternatives -good luck.

If you want a generic power supply, look for something like this in 24v: http://www.quasarelectronics.com/power-supplies.htm#benchpsu

A 24v 275W bulb will draw a little over 11 amps, so you will need a power supply with at least an 12A rating.

i use a cls 500 head and used to have a stabilised transformer. the bulb is a 250w but the reference on the sta500 quoted 275/24 which is what i posted.

i'll follow up the catalogue reference (uk spelling, just like programme!!!) and i'll let you know how i get on.

i'm really encouraged about the non durst power supplies you've been using... wasn't sure it was possible. i've been quoted over 700gbp for a durst replacement!!!

No, transformers only work on ac.

Yes, you should try to get a power supply that matches the original's output (ie 24v AC or 24v DC).
The voltage rating and wattage of you bulb will not be the same if you use AC when it asks for DC, though it may work.

I'm sure someone here knows if the original delivers AC or DC. The 1200 Autocolor manual is here http://manuelsphoto.free.fr/durst_laborator1200autocolor_vf.pdf but it does not say.

cracked it!!!

my original posting was over a knackered transformer for a L1200. thank you to other members for your help and advice.
i tried a number of electrical suppliers and eventually spoke to dave piggott at erea uk which sells lighting transformers.

i bought a 300w 24v transformer for 70 quid delivered!! bit different from durst's £700+.

the company is on 01626 865551. erea.uk@btconnect.com i needed a sparks to wire it in as it came with a 12v output but was wired as a 24v output easily. (it has 4 output sockets.)

proper durst spares are available from a firm called northernphoto (www.northernphoto.co.uk)who hold uk stock of durst spares... link on silverprint's site... guy called terry is very knowledgable and helpful.

i'm making a habit of it!... my local dealer (philip's cameras in norwich uk) sold me an old focomat 11c with a multigrade head for peanuts... small shop and a lot of enlarger, still having problems as i can't sort out the mixer boxes. it's ex local tv company and has been used a bit!!

i'm an ex newspaper photographer and i sort of inherited a leitz 1c from the mirror group when they moved offices post digital crap.

so i've got a darkroom full of goodies at the bottom of the garden... and a nice warm office with a computer and a scanner and a printer etc etc... but i'll use the darkroom regularly now i've got the big lamp working again... honest!!!
