wonderful stuff! :-D

I think I was more fond of this one when I shot it, I wish I wouldn't have cropped out the side of the road off-frame, not sure why I did that. I've been wanting to re-shoot this one sometime, maybe I'll do it now with some motivation :)

A slightly different take on "the road". I had been photographing star trails over salt flats in the dark of the night. Then as it was getting closer to morning I turned to face the road hoping a car woud drive by and I got lucky as one passed by giving me this. So I got the stars, the salt flats, and the hwy out there in the distance.

Thank you Jim. I originally started out with the tripod about 30 foot back, thinking I'd frame the scene with the inside of the picnic pavilion I was standing under. I didn't like that composition and kept moving the tripod forward 10 foot at a time until the pavilion was no longer in the scene at all.

Yeah, Ken, and you play your instrument with love too.

And I have to thank you for one think too, for providing the quadtone profiles. I tweaked a bit with one of them and use it to tone the images. I'm very thankful for that.

But yet another great demonstration of your brilliant photography skills. You continue to amaze me. The first one really reminds me of some parts of the North Shore in Hawaii. I had to make sure it wasn't taken there bofore I made this post. As for the second one great work! I totally have to agree with Ken Lee on this one.

Ken, no I have not (although I have noticed it on your site some time ago). I don't feel the need, since the quadtone workflow does exactly what I want at the moment.

I always work in 16bit greyscale, do all the modifications and treating on this. I save it as JPEG2000, which allows for 16bit greyscale/48bit color and even can include saved selections (PSD is much larger files, although it's lossless). I only [quad]tone the final image, and after toning, I convert the image to RGB. If I need, I tweak the colors a bit afterward, but I prefer for all my photos to be toned the same (or at least the ones that go together), obviously...

But I'll try your new method too... ;)

This is a 4x5 Provia 100F transparency through a 150mmm Nikkor lens I exposed last fall above US395 just south of the June Lake Loop junction with Mount Woods, Lewis, and Gibbs, in the background. This is a somewhat side backlit image in the afternoon that I scurried about to this spot above the highway I'd noticed beforehand as a curving highway section on the topographic map but never actually climbed up to. Driving north, I noticed the fine clouds rising over these Sierra Crest peaks and knew it was time to check out the spot

What size and format do you make the photos so they show larger like Kerik and some of the others. I looked at the requirements for image size and followed them an they are really small on the screen.

If your talking about as an attachment when I save as a jpeg I use Quality Level 5 instead of 10 or 12. I don't know why it works but it does. Hope you don't mind. It should even be better when you do it from the original scan.

Thank you very much. Just to clarify, that's a long way north of the racetrack, somewhere in Nevada's Black Rock Desert. The exact location is of course, Top Secret-everyone should have their very own dry lake bed! :)

Aww come on let me know, I won't tell anyone. haha Scouts honor!
I was going to go to DV this February 19th but instead we're going to Joshua Tree. Death Valley is like an amusement park for large format photographers but JT is closer to me and easier to bring the girlfriend.

Wow. Thanks EL. It's comments like yours that inspire ME to keep going. Seriously, thank you. Now, if you meet any publishers, please don't hesitate to send them my way-ha!

As for the "Secret Playa," I'm afraid I really am sworn to secrecy. I will say though, that if you like places like that, Google Earth is a great tool to find them.

I do realize there are a lot of dry lakebeds up in that area, but you may have heard Austin of that little festival called Burning Man that nowadays brings 50,000 people for a week to "the playa" in the Black Rock. BM uses the biggest of all the lakebeds (ancient Lake Lahontan), but stays generally in the southernmost 1/3 of the full Playa, per the BLM's permitting.

My guess was that your photo was probably shot from a more northern section of the Playa, some miles north of where Burning Man takes place. But I could be wrong. And, you can keep it a secret too. :)

The festival was how I was first introduced to the place, but some friends and I now go out there in the "off" season quite a bit too. It's an incredible area. Especially to the north...

Thanks Jiri and Preston. Actually, the scene was even more surreal than you can tell by looking at the photo-that sculpture in the middle was playing "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong (!), and all as this huge dust storm was closing in.

Awesome shots Austin! ...and somehow not surprised. ;) the NW corner of Nevada was I suspect a rather more lonely and less frequently visited realm before the Burn.
Done the burn a few times myself.. as in every year for well over a decade now. :)
A few pics on my website. would love to compare photo notes sometime!

PS -- also love your photos from Point Reyes NS.
