Art History book recommendation

Hi all:

I was wanting to purchase an all- encompassing type "textbook" on art (graphic art) history. I understand the value in studying this topic as it relates to photography, but don't know what a good book would be. Any recommendation?

We used Gardner's "Art Through the Ages" in my cultural history classes. It is a very good overall survey of a really big topic. There is also a lot of good stuff online these days.

Thanks David- This is the recommendation I've gotten from a couple others. It looks great. I found both volumes at a used book store online, in new condition.

I like Janson's "History of Art." It's a beast and the best.

Art Across Time by Laurie Schneider Adams. I have the 2nd edition.
