Uhhhh...I believe you set the bar pretty high here...incredible shot to say the least and a fantastic thread. This is the pier just south of the point breaks (forget what Ave surfers call it though I rode the spot one day and it was perfect well overhead w/offshores while Rincon was not getting much due to the more severe N. angle of the swell) and just north of the baby jettys right?

Rincon (Spanish, "angle" or "corner") is a surf spot located at the Ventura and Santa Barbara County line in Southern California, USA. Also known as the "Queen of the Coast", Rincon is one of the most recognized surf spots in California and known around the world for its long, peeling rights. It is best at low tide during the winter. Surrounded by a private gated community, access is restricted to a trail at the bottom and top of the point.

Location

Rincon is located near U.S. Route 101 at Bates Rd.

Rincon is divided into three parts; the Cove, River Mouth, and Indicator. The cove is primarily surfed by longboards and is closest to the freeway. Rivermouth is the speed section reaching from the top of the runoff water outlet to the large white/stone house. The Rivermouth barrels hard at low tide and needs a strong swell to be connected. Indicator reaches around the stone wall, not visible from the freeway. Indicator is the prime take-off spot on bigs days and is often rippable during the small days. Unfortunately, water quality suffers as a result of winter rains, causing occasional beach closures.

Where are the images?

Dear Hugo,

I'd appreciate your not making literary allusions on a photographic list ;-)

It really confuses my preconceptions regarding the literacy of photographers.

And I'm sorry but piers are not very common in this mountainous area, thus I have no images at hand, but it sounds like a good theme.

Yours in Joyce - Ross (pardon the digression!)

Sheldon,

Nice shot, if I am not mistaken, that is the St. John's bridge is it not?

Dave

It definitely looks like it. I haven't seen the bridge in person, but the wood posts remind me a lot of the ones at the bridge crossing from Astoria into WA.

I think we Oregonians have tons of bridge shots to display. Since moving up here, I have never seen so many bridges in my life, and all very beautiful ones. It's certainly not a pier, though;). Maybe old pieces from a dock?

Gorgeous shot indeed to say the very least. Wonderful angle and perspective. Not the usual bridge photo I have seen which makes it very fresh like the b/w rendition of it, the water, etc.

I think for those mountainous people and others, a pier could be something like a dock that you find many of at lakes and various places. I consider a pier what Hugo shot or the many located in the southern part of the state like HB, Seal, Manhattan, Malibu, Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach?, OSide, and even close to Ventura would be the Santa Barbara pier, along with those up the state more like Pismo Beach, San Juan Cap?, Morro Bay/Carmel maybe?, SC has one right near the boardwalk, and after that, I think things get kinda remote, though there's plenty of sorta piers in SF area. A nice Wiki of these locations would surely help;).

How about some nice piers over in NC-Outer Banks, Atlantic City-famous one seen in movies, FL, Jersey, and probably most every state on the East in a bit down on the South including TX.

Just some areas I can think of for those from the States though I'm sure there's plenty around the world.

Rincon will always be up there with my favorite all time breaks. C street is the one I was thinking of and it indeed resides just north of the pier, but for those that have lived in the area or surf these waves and the waves in between the pier-Rincon, C street is a bit of a ways from Rincon:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/apwill44/335736255/

It basically breaks like a point, but not quite like Rincon which seems to continue forever on good days. More like Upper Trestles or even Lower Trestles...both very good waves. Would say Malibu, but I've never surfed it;)...

Good pictures-

This one isn't ready for her closeup yet-
but the work is nearly finished, and I'll be back-

I only post this, because it's the pier in Hugo's partial quotation-
and the first pic, by RJ Welch, is quite contemporaneous with that quotation-

My one was just a disappointed test, when I arrived to find the fences...

Yes, good old North Portland!

There's no such bridge in North Portland. The Grand Trunk Railroad Bridge doesn't even come close to that height.

I believe you are thinking of Portland, Maine.

This bridge is clear across the country in Portland, Oregon. It's most definitely there - no photoshop compositing required! :)

Vinny, I have a sweat spot for such images (both color and bw) in my heart. I think it comes from me living 700km to the closest sea, and seeing the sea only once a year on vacation... I envy you so much having an easy and regular access to the sea...

(Neither do we have mountains you would call proper mountains.)

So you can put any number of images like there and I will not have enough...

Kerik, I really like the image of the fisherman, great light, very well done.

Sheldon N
14-Jul-2008, 18:56
No, I don't believe I used any filters at all. I think the exposure was about 2 minutes at f/22 or f/32, shot in the fading light of day.

You get those nice starburst when shooting stopped down at point light sources.

Turner Reich
14-Jul-2008, 21:13
Well it's a fantastic exposure and well seen too.
