Funny… Last time I called them they told me there was no problem photographing… Maybe it's the usual "it's a big camera, therefor he must be a professional making money out of this"… Thanks, I'll double-check! Are you located in Basel, by the way? I am there quite often this fall, maybe we could meet for a coffee?

I'll be interested to see how you interpret the Goetheanum, Claudio. Yes, I live in Basel-Stadt, and it would be great to meet for a coffee.

thanks guys for the kind words, im open to critics too!

I like this (10 years expired) portra too, it contains all natural tones without too much contrast, so I can apply the desired contrast if I want to in a second. But Im speaking easy as this is the only film I shot so far ;) ! oh no Ive tried one the same kind but which is not expired... I did not see much difference (yet, but Im sure there is).

David, I like the Beyeler one! nice beautiful tones as always, your new 58mm performing great I can see!

Although I posted this in the Old Things... thread earlier today - is is an old building which will turn 100 in 2015 - it's also a very unique architectual subject and a "must see" attraction for visitors to San Francisco. So I thought it would also be appropriate to show case it in this thread too.

Palace of Fine Arts San Francisco

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2172/5751266647_f133d524b0.jpg

The Palace of Fine Art was constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition which was a world fair held in San Francisco during 1915. Ansel Adams' parents allowed him to drop out of school that year and gave him a daily pass to attend the fair which he did. Among the many artists that exhibited in the Palace was Edward Weston. For further information on the 1915 Exposition and the Palace of Fine Arts, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panama-...osition_(1915) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panama-...osition_(1915) and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_of_Fine_Arts) and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_of_Fine_Arts

Here is a watercolor painted by artist Colin Cooper http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_Campbell_Cooper who won a silver medal at the fair:

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6094/6235940668_c029679f5c.jpg

I discovered Cooper's watercolor today while searching the Wikipedia links posted above. It was painted from a perspective almost exactly where I photographed from. I wanted to exclude the small inlet shown in the immediate foreground of the painting which is preserved to this day but bounded by a concrete retainer wall, so I moved the camera about 15 feet uphill and used a 210mm lens on a 4x5 camera rather than a wider lens which would have given a similar visual perspective. I have been planning on shooting this at night and later this week may be a good time to do it as the moon will be out of the way and an offshore flow is expected. I would love a starry sky as in the watercolor but although this view is looking west over the ocean and away from the urban light pollution, an exposure long enough to capture a few of the brighter stars would be a challenge. Perhaps a ND Grad positioned at the top of the dome...

It is a scene when I had the luky of the white light lamps, normally they are yellow or green cast on slides, this also is a blue-hour time, you have to pratice to feel the light, because it is normal that the eye corrects more the contrast and if you wait too long the slide closes the shadows and dark too much, like the second and the third shoot.
I had to moove so fast... btw is a long exposure because I work with a f/22 @100 iso.

And there is a reciprocy failure to solve, sometime afther the shoot the light is so changed that a second exposure is darker, you have to meter all time long.
Now I use velvia or Provia, because of the reciprocity failure is correct till 120".

Second one.
The shape of the stairs in the foregrund fits better to the dynamic
of the roof construction. The composition of the picture is much more better.

What I would (try to) save from the first one is the the point where the
upper left part of the roof meets the buildings in the background,
this part is much better on the first picture.

I complitely agree with you about the spikes of the roof of the first shot.

I changed trypod now, this in those pics was too small, about 5 feets complitely open.

Laron
15-Oct-2011, 02:46
agree too with the remarks, but actually I would even think of is it important having a handrail or stairs in the foreground? I think it doesnt makes the image/composition/message any stronger, that way I would try to skip it and maybe from the 1st point of view just move forward to avoid anything in the foreground. As we wont have any idea no more where we are standing that way, it would add another layer of mystery, which is somehow related with the message of the building too. to fill the whole composition with just this building (without the profane foreground) also in such a magic/majectic hour could be even stronger and simpler. but this is just my opinion...

Hi,

this is great, looks like a landed 23rd centenary space ship.
Here the black sky works good.

But in my taste there's too much mirrowing in the water and I don't like the lamp in the left bottom corner.

You see the 4 tiny white points in the bottom right corner?
I'd crop directly under this four points.
OK, that's just my feeling.

Thanks... I didn't catch that, but I think it was just the fact that the transperency didn't sit perfectly in the scanner's slide carrier. After I tilted the image a little all the lines appear correct. So, I'll have to repost the image.

Aztek Premier drum scans (thank you Tim Povlick!) of a couple of photos I took while in Rome, using Steven Icanberry's Alpenhause with my 135/3.5 Xenotar mounted.

Full resolution pictures use a lot of RAM to open.. The Colosseo picture was shot at f/22 at 200 seconds (100s metered, but added +1 stop for reciprocity) and developed normally. The picture from the inside courtyard of the castle was shot at f22 or f32 and pushed 2 stops.

I corrected the orientation of the image and re-posted it to flickr. It was off by -0.6 degrees.

This building was completed in 1901, construction started in 1899, about 10 years after the communities that form Orange County split away from Los Angeles County. Most residents here do not know that OC used to be part of LA County. I have the original construction drawings for this structure in my office. Nevertheless, I have not yet been inside the building. It's now a museum.

I would leave these just as they are. The darker corners just draw the viewer's eye to the subject, and don't detract from it IMO.

Great shots, both color and B&W.

anyways, nice composition, I prefer yours to mine and the hour of day is better on yours as well...

I would see one with a very wide angle too, like 58 or 47mm portrait but possibly it cannot have shifted horizont...

In my expreience Velvia and Provia produce color casts... Sometimes they are more noticeable or distracting than others. You might want to try Astia.

Gerald,
I'm not one to give advice on that, as many of my recent posts have been about colour-balancing in PS.
I was getting a lot of green in my scans of C-41 film, and the advice offered got me started in a better direction.

Very nice shot, David!

After Laron first, then David, posted photographs of the Antoniuschurch in Basel, here is my take on it… Continuing my "dialog" with Sugimoto, overlapping a well focussed, and a "twice infinity" shot by unscrewing the Verito's front element.

This church is obviously the mecca (if that's OK to say about a Roman Catholic church) of LF architectural photography! There's a beautiful soft quality to the light as it comes through the stained glass which you've captured well, Claudio. I find the image of Christ on the wall behind the altar to be fascinating, and it seems almost clearer in your photograph than a 'straight' one. What do you think?

Laron
6-Nov-2011, 02:34
David, beautiful details and tones as always, you captured the essence of this building!

Claudio, your version I like a lot too! Wonderful colors and I love the unique look you achive with your method. Its not like the usual "soft-creamy" look, something different, something more. Even I have no problems with the converging pillars and the "non perfect" framing, the atmosphere is more on focus which I like.

More from my experiments on architecture… Toying with the Verito convertible lens, I create two negatives that are printed together - one properly in focus for the details, the other one at… "twice infinity" (by simply unscrewing the front element of the Verito…). Reflecting on (and reacting to) Sugimoto's approach…

yess it was a 75mm sa, although unfortunately I had to tilt a little bit up on the spot and correct in post, I was afraid of going out of image circle. Im sure a 72mm xl would solve this problem but for my budget of course ps was the only tool...

That's a very interesting photograph, Claudio. It seems to look much more 'mushroomy' than a straight photograph, rather like the neighbouring buildings.

Good to hear that you were welcomed - I was only asked to complete a form when I moved closer to the building;

Your description of the building at night sounds intriguing, Claudio - I must go and see that. It does seem to be a building that hides itself away. Is your photograph from the field at the back of the building? We sometimes use that road when we're coming back from Germany with our shopping from Fünfschilling. I have a more conventional view of the Beyeler, of the water at the front that creates the light that ripples across the large Monet;

Steelways : Originally posted a version of this taken with a 58mm lens on the urban landscape thread, but I didn't like how the 58mm made everything look obviously wide angle, and much detail was lost in the building. I since returned with a 110xl lens and stitched 5 negatives together.

I think I'm starting to get somewhere with this subject. I thought of Gursky's Montparnasse photo, and how leaving any indication of the building length out of the picture creates a more mysterious effect...

I'm not sure whether to classify this one as architectural or scenic. It's a heavily front-tilted shot of the fountain staircase at Maymont in Richmond, VA. They switch off the water during the winter so that the pipes don't freeze, though that isn't much of a concern with the mild winter we've had this year.

Now just watch; I've gone and jinxed us into a 2-foot blizzard nor'easter.

Neat location. Is this also with the 90mm? Maybe it's just the curved pipe on the left, but this one feels rather fishy-eyed.

jcoldslabs
5-Feb-2012, 14:41
It was a really neat place and I was lucky to get a chance to shoot in there.

The second image was made with the 90mm also (the widest I've got) but it was such a small cramped space that I had to tilt the camera upwards rather than raise the front standard which, in the Toyo, doesn't give you much adjustment anyway.

I think the vent pipe IS curved a bit in reality; the low shooting angle only makes it worse.

EDIT: I really like the stairs/fountain by the way. What film did you use?

FP4+ in Xtol 1:1, which is my usual combination. I've spent the time to figure out my ISO speed and various development times, and can't see a reason to mess with anything else. I've often wished for more speed for photographing my kids, but don't really want to spend the additional money and time shifting to TMY. It might vanish one of these days anyway.

This is, really, the first architecture photo I've done, and just looking for some feedback, tips, whatever. I know that I need to get those verticals vertical, and work on my focus; anything else that is critical here?

http://grahamcase.ca/blog/images/Stripped_House002.jpg

This was just a test, of sorts - I got to the house later than I planned, and the light had already started to fade on me (you can see the shadows of other houses on the first floor section). I was also looking to see what lens to use (90mm or 150mm - the 150mm is what I used here).

Thanks!

Jan,

Thanks for the compliment. The whole tilt/swing thing, especially with the Aero Ektar, sometimes seems overdone, but I enjoy shooting with it so much I don't worry about it, especially not when I am happy with the results.

I had a dentist appointment that day (last November) and brought all my gear to shoot from the top of the parking garage afterward. A bike cop actually rode up and questioned me about my activites. Speed Graphic on tripod, Polaroid and Fuji instant prints drying on the ground all around me and he wanted to know what I was doing. It took all I had not to respond with, "Guess." He was polite and left me alone after I explained that I was simply taking photographs for personal satisfaction. (You think?)

Just took at look at your Web site. "The Atlantic Wall #51" is great. Fantastic broken symmetry. Strong image.

P.S. Attached is another image from that same shoot.

I really like this one Jonathan. So often I see the swing/tilt/wide open look used as sort of a gimmick, but that's not the case here at all. You've connected the flag and the clock to create an interesting and thoughtful picture. And perfect timing on that flag too.

Bethe, Jim, Austin--

I'm blushing! Thanks for the compliments. This was a day where more shots worked out than not, which is rare but very rewarding. Austin, it's funny you mention the focal plane cutting through the clock and the flag. My original intent was to visually connect the two flags, the one on the crane and the one on the clock tower, but the wind did not cooperate. Either one was unfurled and the other was limp, or vice versa. (In my mind I had already titled this image, "Two Flags.") It was only when I saw the negatives that I liked the flag and the clock in focus together together. Funny how that works, huh?

Thanks again everyone for commenting on my work. I really appreciate it. Very encouraging.

My only suggestion would be to get up higher or back further to reduce the
contribution of the fence. It's kind of overpowering.

Nice shot.

I agree with Leigh. The exposure looks good to me. There is detail in the barn, silo and even the shingles on the tower. If you could have had a higher perspective it would have added to the shot and reduced the power of the fence but if it were my shot I would be pretty happy with it.

Kav, is your film fogged, or is that the crap-tastic scan to which you were referring?

I don't think it's fogged, but the negative still has some of the pink dye on it where the image is "fogged". I need to see if I can do something to rewash and get rid of the rest of the dye. And like I said above I need to work on my developing skills as well. But I do like the look of it. Most of the other spots and marks are from the scanner. I used an old plain flatbed scanner I found in a junk pile at work. I'm surprised I got anything out of it at all.
