Epson sells refurbished printers on its website. A couple of years ago I got a refurb 2200 for $450. With the Quadtone RIP it does a reasonable job wi b/w.

The Cone septone inks are great for b/w, but now require a bulk feed.

A couple of questions...

How much can you afford to spend?

How large is the largest print you wish to make?

I second the Epson refurb idea.

Uh oh. You're in for a surprise. Lots a good printers are cheap. It's the ink that's going to hurt.

No doubt about that!! I did a portfolio project for a Christmas present on the new Canon Pro9000 I bought and I probably spent $250 in ink alone!!

by the way my Pro9000 works pretty good for a $350 printer. Not real happy with black and white prints, tends to have a green shade. I also am a little bummed it doesn't print borderless 11x14 prints, with some playing around I think you can get around that issue though.
The color prints I've done to 11x17 look fantastic.

Good luck.

Don't pinch pennies too much for a printer or you are sure to have buyers remorse down the road.

What's your budget?

As others have mentioned it's the consumables that will cost you in the end.

I just basically want it for proofing.$ 200. is what I'm hoping to spend.Well the Epson 1400 is currently for sale @ Epson.com for $269. That includes free shipping and an instant $30 rebate.

This printer will certainly support your needs for proofing and more.
