I believe all the photos they are putting on flickr can already be downlaoded off the LoC website in a high resolution. This is just a more popular format for what is already available for access.

yes, that's what I say, although it's more than just making them more popular - it's bring folksonomy to a large unique historic collection on potentially a fairly massive scale.

It's bringing it to a wider audience with a broader purpose than just making it more popular

(add this into Seadragon etc, and the potential is quite mind boggling)

As an additional for instance - not tied to the Flickr images, a but someone recently browsing the LoC Civil War photographs found "new" photos of Lincoln's Inauguration - they had been mislabelled/catalogued all this time.

The potential for much greater information about many of the image via Flickr is an interesting possibility
