Hello,

I want to get a Ries tripod for my Canham DLC45. Weight is not a consideration; I want a stable platform. The Ries model I'm considering is the J-100 with the J-250 Double Tilt head.

Is this a good support for the Canham? The J-100 is rated to 16 lbs. The J-100(2) is rated to 25lbs. Is there any benefit to the J-100(2) over the J-100, or am I just buying more stability than I need or can use?

As always, input is appreciated.
Greg

Greg, you already got answers on your other thread. You don't need the (2) either the J100 or the J600 will work fine for you. Ries ratings are incredibly conservative. You'll get allt he stability you need with either the J100 (1) or the J600. I've used a J600 for years with cameras twice the size and weight of the DLC.

Simply buy a Ries. I use them with my 4x5 and 8x10 gear for years. Never disappointed.

I use a J-100 under a Calumet C-1 with nary a problem. 'nuff said.

I have the J100-2, it's too heavy and long for 4x5, mine stayed home a lot until I got an 8x10 camera.

I know also found a (used) H100, which has the same legs as a J100, and it's perfect for my 4x5 applications.

I don't know what it is with Ries ? I've used Gitzo, Manfrotto/Bogen and Linhof tripods and have played with Berlebachs, but nothing compares to Ries. Both of mine are a joy to use.

Greg,
Be sure the one you get is tall enough for you. I am at six feet, shrinking to 5' 11", and the J-100 is not. Luckily, I had longer legs from an ancient Ries and substituted them in; I would have hated to have to buy another set.

In which case, you need the J100-2 ... for the extra 3" :p

j100 legs and j200 head has done me just fine, even with a monorail cambo
