Not for everyone, but interesting that such a thing exists:

But don't watch landscape photographers unless you enjoy seeing paint dry. HA!

Cool watch.

gag!

i want my version to simultaneously show the times in yosemite, point lobos, and hernandez.

so what if they're all in the same time zone.

"Very often people looking at my pictures say, 'You must have had to wait a long time to get that cloud just right (or that shadow, or the light).' As a matter of fact, I almost never wait, that is, unless I can see that the thing will be right in a few minutes. But if I must wait an hour for the shadow to move, or the light to change, or the cow to graze in the other direction, then I put up my camera and go on, knowing that I am likely to find three subjects just as good in the same hour." -Edward Weston

"When subject matter is forced to fit into preconceived patterns, there can be no freshness of vision. Following rules of composition can only lead to a tedious repetition of pictorial cliches." -Edward Weston

$495!!!! I can get a GPS that does that for less and tells me where I am at the same time.

OK - the GPS will not fit on my wrist. But I do have a Casio Pathfinder watch http://www.casio.com/products/Timepiece/Sports/PAS400B-5V/ that tells me the phase of the moon and the time for sunrise and sunset. Street price of $40.

I haven't even bothered to replace the battery for my watch yet, and the battery when flat several months ago. I have a kitchen timer in my camera pack for those multi-second exposures.

Edited to add...I find paying attention to the moon whenever I am out is sufficient.

Since the introduction of the cell phone, a watch has been a piece of jewellery.

What's wrong with a piece of jewellery that has these functions? It comes from a long tradition of watches, many of them with similar functions that are not exactly essential, and many of which cost a lot more money. It isn't hard to spend $20k for a watch that does these things. It's just a question, if you want to buy a piece of jewellery, of what quality you want. Interestingly, all this solar system stuff is part of a watch tradition that has particular appeal to men. Kind of like electic train sets. So it's kind of funny to see men dissing it.

you could leapfrog this product by introducing a landscape photographer's gps. for a few hundred extra bucks it would come loaded with coordinates of all the places you must photograph. you know, tenaya lake, monument valley, etc. etc.

i saw a wildly expensive, all-mechanical watch by breguet, that showed the cycles of the moon. they could calibrate one to show the status of the moon over hernandez.

'The Yes Watch' .... no no no.

If you are considering purchasing the 'Yes Watch' you may also consider answering 'The Clue Phone'... because you are definately out of touch with your subject.

I loved the days when cellular phones were few and far between, or nonexistant.

I don't own a cell phone (selfone), and I'm content to read the local paper to find out when sunrise, sunset, full moon, and low tide are. One also finds out what's happening locally that way.

Geeze, you guys sound like a bunch of old curmudgeons. A watch is just jewellery/ a status symbol- many people pay over ten grand for one. If someone wants to shell out $495 to get one, and it has the added value of being useful as a photography outing planner, what's the problem? I personally would never pay $495 for it, and it's pretty easy to just look up sunrise/sunset times and the cycles of the moon on the internet before a trip. However, I've seen numerous other gadgets, costing considerably more and having even less value to me, exhalted by other LF photographers. Six months later, they always reveal that they haven't actually used them for anything, but the novelty and conversation value is worth the money, I suppose.

By the way, how do you guys make it with no cell phones? It's one thing if you're just out photographing by yourself, but if you want to meet up with your photo buddies in a remote location, you need to stay in touch...

As we're on the subject of watches, can anybody recommend an analogue watch (with no fancy multiple dial things) that is reliable, robust, and with a smallish face (about 38mm or so) for less than $500? I get confused when I see the zillion bazillion available online, and some prices are really scary. I was about to buy a Timex (gulp) but I thought maybe someone may have a suggestion here when I saw this thread. Thanx.

This has a titanium case, saphire crystal, waterproof, carbon fiber strap:

Here's what's really bizarre.

Somebody starts a thread about a well-written, interesting article in the current issue of a major magazine, the New Yorker, about Leica cameras (which of course means that the article is about larger issues of photography), and the thread gets deleted.

Meanwhile, going on about wristwatches is perfectly cool.

:)

Or am I wrong, and the thread, started last night, is still here someplace and I just can't find it?

Anyway, since the thread seems to have gone missing, and the article is quite well done, and the New Yorker has decided to publish it on-line, here is the link: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2007/09/24/070924fa_fact_lane/

My Garmin 60CX GPS cost a fraction of that. In C$ it cost a fraction the things are even cheaper in the US last I looked. It'll even point me home if I get lost.

Luminox. you can see the second hand (on many models, check to see) for timed exposures in dim light and use in the darkroom. It is the only watch I've found that could be read without supplementary lighting under all ambient light situations. Be sure the model has all tritium lights.

Cheers,

Steve

How about the "Ansel Adams Signature" watch, pre-programmed with the exact GPS coordinates of the tripod holes of St. Ansel's top 100 images? If that model is commercially sucessful, perhaps other watches paying homage to Weston, Porter, Muench, Dykinga, etc. will come out... ;)
