I'm using Astia and Velvia 4*5 and am wondering what shutter speed do I need to capture fog rising off a river? It seems to me that long exposures see right thr ough it!

Depends on how fast the fog is moving and what you consider a long exposure. I'v e had good results at one-quarter second and 125th. Backlighting is the key. Sid e lighting works well also, but for me backlighting works better.

If it were as simple as choosing a specific shutter speed you would have it alre ady. Vary you esposure a but and you may find that a touch of underexposure com bined with having fog offset against a darker background will give good results. Lens flare, even minor flare, can interfere with delicate renditions such as you are seeking. But if you can side or backlight the fog you should get good resu lts. Good luck.
