nice picture Ken, but I felt so strange about tonality especially on the skin tone, I have no idea...

You're right. Part of this is because the image shows against a white background.

Against a dark background (http://www.kenleegallery.com/html/portraits/sns.htm), things look a little different. I will modify the image when I can.

Thanks, this is one of my best prints and one of the reasons I'm trying to get my stuff ready to show to people for the first time. I've been trying to learn how to mount/matte, and in the next few days I'm going to try spotting prints for the first time. This one in particular needs quite a bit of spotting unfortunately =(

Ken,

This one is full size negative (4x5). It's a first draft so far jus to get a feel how it looks overall. I'm chewing my senses through it.

I might try to print it as 16x20 or 20x24. I feel big print will have a "look".

Film police?? Did I say this is a film site?? As far as I know it's large format site as in large format camera. I just asked at what point was a large format camera used? Film police, that's funny.

Chris Strobel
20-Jul-2007, 09:55
Ha Ha I knew this would come up.Is this not beating a dead horse?I was one of the ones complaining here last year about all the dslr stitching discussions, and the owner of this site stated it was ok as long as the file sizes were at LF equivalents.I was disappointed as to me LF is the use of a view camera. So from that point on this site stopped being the Large Format Photography site, and instead became the Large File Size Photography site.So to answer the question at no point did I use what I personally consider to be a LF camera, well I did use my Calumet C-1 case to set my coke on during the the shot, does that count :D

One from yesterday. I accidentally read my meter as 1/8 of a second instead of a full 8 seconds, I only realized this after I developed the negative and saw an almost clear negative! Grrrr! However, out of curiosity I scanned it in anyway, and after I cranked on the input adjustment it turned out pretty creepy looking! Although I'm going back to re-shoot this scene tonight, I think I may print out this grainy one as well :D

He is one I took under the Port Mann Bridge (Trans Canada Highway bridge over the Fraser River), New Westminster, BC. The bridge in the distance is the Skytrain bridge. I shot it on 8x10 HP5+ and developed it in Pyrocat-HD.

I like it a lot. Even though the structures are modern, they somehow look ancient, older than the pyramids. Is the image vertical ?

Yes, the image is vertical. It's an 8x10 contact and slightly cropped in the computer (and on the easel). Thanks Ken for commenting on it. I also feel its ancient qualities.

I'm looking at my image on a crappy computer at school (gads, I am teaching summer school) and it looks really dark. Yuk.

It looks a bit crooked to me. I'm tempted to straighten it out.

...But I'm not compulsive.:)

It's a great composition of lines (about 50 of them). There are fat lines and fine lines. And I like that not a single one of them is parallel to the frame or to each other.

Damnit! I didn't think anyone would notice!:)

I knew I should have swung the back a bit. I was right next to a train track and very very paranoid that a locomotive would come. Everytime I heard a hooooooonk! I nearly went right through the dark cloth!

Thanks for the input, Ken...compulsive or not!
Thanks, Kirk. That means a lot.

Andrew,
fantastic image, no need for any perspective adjustments here, what you've got looks right and is very interesting.

Amund,
I haven't seen it done this well before and given how many times it's been done that must mean this is pretty good. Transcends the stereotype.

What I like about both these pictures is that they demand my attention for more than 5 seconds, this is my litmus test for great photographs. There is a degree of complexity and refinement in the compositions that is very rare.

Tri-X 320 in HC110, this shot in particular had an orange filter (to bring out the golden grass, and darken the sky a bit) I also under developed to try and bring the sky down a bit. Not sure if the filter, or the under development did it. I metered the brightest horizon value nudging against zone 9 (through the filter), I'm not quite sure how far it got brought down after the shorter development, but I think it turned out well. It's all easily in usable range!

Below is a recent image from my trip to Oregon. The image was cropped from 4 X 5 to as presented due to the extreme darkness in the lower right of the image. Image taken with Toho Shimo FC-45X, Congo WA 90mm f6.3 MC lens. Lens purchased from Jim Galli and yes Jim the lens is sharp out to or about the edges. Exposure approximately 1/2 sec at about f22 on Fujichrome Velvia 100.
