In the back of my mind I remember an article in Pop Photo from years back about a photographer who did photos of the surviving Revolutionary War vets, right after photography became commercial. Can anyone help me find more info about these pictures?

which mentions:
"Early photographer E.B. Hillard traveled the nation photographing all the remaining 18th century veterans he could find and published the results in 1864. There are at least a dozen "carte vise" photos in his book "The Last Men of the Revolution". "
http://morrisonspensions.org/last.html states: "Realzing that time was running out, the Reverend Elias Brewster Hillard set out in the spring of 1864 to interview and photograph the surviving veterans. He published the story of seven of these soldiers in The Last Men of the Revolution (1864)."
This link is probably the best: http://www.americanrevolution.org/lastmen.html
You did mean the American revolutionary war, didn't you? There have been a few others.
Best,

The article is in the July 1976 issue of Popular Photography (vol 79, no 1), and it is indeed about Hillard's work. In addition to a backgrounder, it features pictures and short stories on all six that Hillard was able to locate of the seven then-surviving Revolutionary War veterans.

Oren,
1976? It was 31 years ago? I think I need a drink.

Ed, what's even more frightening is that your post was enough to trigger recollections of it as a POP Bicentennial special, and it took me all of 15 seconds to find it on the shelf.
Think I'll join you at the bar...

Fascinating stuff. I was very heartened to read that most of them smoked and drank, in one case to the extent of being "addicted to alchohol," and all were over a hundred years old.

Ed,
So glad you brought this up. I've read just one of the sketches on http://www.americanrevolution.org/lastmen.html, and it gave me chills to read recollections of one of these men. And by seeing the photo too, it seemed like I could actually hear him speak.

Bruce,
There is something magic about these old photos that conveys a sense of connection that, at least for me, a painting never does.
