Hallo!
Here are some pictures made with a Verito 18" in 8x10. Hope you enyou it and all the best from Berlin.

Here is a studio shot on 8x10 Ektachrome (tungsten) from about 1980. I used 2000w fresnel as key light, traditional "Hollywood" style butterfly lighting. 18" Verito, Packard shutter, 8x10 Agfa/Ansco camera. For some reason any color upload I do to this forum gets muted color, the original is much more vibrant.

Gorgeous! - the photo and the lady. A very convincing example IMO that these lenses- when in the right hands and used with discretion- can add impact, whereas other types of lenses, when used for the same subject and with the same lighting, might remove this lively "presence" and replace it by something reminding of Madame Tussods, not to say morgue.

Here's one from an 8.75" Verito on 5x7 film printed on Centennial POP. Be forewarned it is an image of a nude (http://my.net-link.net/~jsmigiel/images/Anima.jpg) in the landscape. So if you are under the age of majority or find such themes offensive, don't look.

I love the look of the Verito with the buildings as subjects.

For Gene: I took the liberty of opening your photo in Photoshop and found it had no color space tag attached. Virtually all web browsers will assume the color space is sRGB. When I opened your file and asked PS to assume the file was in the sRGB space, it looks just like it does in my browsers. I then opened the file in PS but asked PS to assume the color space was AdobeRGB and then convert to sRGB. The result is a much more vivid (and realistic to my eye) result. I've attached the modified files for your viewing pleasure. Both files are now tagged with sRGB. I realize I have made a change to your image without your express prior approval but I hope you will find it instructive.

Do I assume correctly that the bristlecone pine image was made with about 1--2 inches of front rise? The "swirlies" at the top of the picture suggest that the optical center was about that far below the center of the frame. (Nice image, anyway!)

Yes, conservatively at least 2" probably more as camera position was downhill steeply from the tree's base.

On my monitor at least, there seems to be something like grain in the sky.

Is that due to the lens, or something else ?

Yes, grain. 400 asa film grossly overexposed with a "studio shutter". I could send the neg to Iraq for some poor soldier to use as protection. It's definitely bullet proof.

Thanks

Hi Gene

BUTTERFLY LIGHTING is where you have a "hard" light up high, almost directly in front of the model, so the shadow of the nose forms just a little butterfly under the nose. A Classic portrait technique, hard light, soft lens, produces glamour.

Of course, unless you are hanging your lighting instrument from the ceiling, the light "has" to be a little bit right or left of center, so you have a place for your camera.

ebay is a good place to start. First, what camera are you using and how big is the lensboard? Some of the old portrait lenses are huge and require a big lensboard. Search for Verito, Veritar, Kodak Portrait, Imagon, Versar, etc. A few years ago these lenses were available very cheap. Not so anymore...

sometimes you can find them mis-listed on ebay by searching "old lens" or "brass lens"
i have found pretty good stuff that way ...

Here are a couple quick negative scans for comparison sake....first one on the left was taken with a Dallmeyer 5D Portrait Lens at f8 and the 2nd one, which is on the right, was taken with a 14.5 inch Verito in a studio shutter at f16. Not the greatest scans or exposures, but gives one an idea about "bokeh" with these lens.

Even if the Adobe RGB profile was attached the only web browser that would have rendered it properly to my knowledge is Safari. sRGB conversion is essential for web work.

pedal car and puddle duck 14 1/2 Verito f6

The change between f4 and f6 is subtle. Rain is rare in Tonopah. I looked out the garage door at this scene and thought perhaps making a pic or 2 with this lens would help it find a new owner. The difference in lighting is from the sun going in and out of the clouds, not the aperture.

From a 14" Veritar. I may have posted a lesser version of this, rephotographed with a dslr, but I just got a big scanner (Epson 1640xl), and can finally do it semi-justice...

Veritos will definitely give you the swirlies, if you know how to pull them out, (which isn't very hard...) Swirlies are fun once in a while, but they can get old if you do it very often.

Emil the software here is very nervous about anything not in the most simple alphabet. If there are any '&' (ampersan) signs or even spaces between words it seems not to work. Try setting up a seperate folder at your site and import the pictures with very simple names, no spaces between words. An underscore_between words seems to be OK. A hyphen-between words is OK too.

http://www.emilschildt.com/OLD%20LENSES%20verito%20bambi.htm

redo it so it looks like OLD_LENSES_verito_bambi.jpg

For instance on your kill your darlings page, if I right click on the portrait of suzanne, the properties there tells me that the .jpg address for that picture is:

http://www.emilschildt.com/KILL%20ny/K-susanne.jpg

Whatever you typed in, a space maybe, that the software turned into the %20 is what is messing it up at this site.

Hope that helps.

feeling stupid

Marko
20-Apr-2009, 15:10
Emil, no need to feel stupid, you shouldn't be expected to know all these little quirks.

As Jim said, html essentially requires pure ascii alphanumerics plus underscore and hyphen, nothing else is really legitimate. Ampersands (&), semicolons and other punctuation characters have special meanings, they act as control characters and so cause html to choke when they are not properly used.

To make matters worse, some browsers will attempt to "intelligently" interpret them, while others will simply ignore them, some are case-sensitive (i.e. distinguish upper and lower case) while others are not.

So to avoid any problems, try to do the following:

1. Name your files using only lowercase a-z, 0-9 and _ (underscore) (try to avoid hyphen too) for naming your files and your directories.

2. Type the full path (url) to your image in your own browser and when it shows up, copy the url in the address bar and paste it between [img] tags here. That way, you are using known good url.

That should do it. Good luck. :)

Emil Schildt

Marko
20-Apr-2009, 16:29
Ok, I see what's happening. It's not showing because the url is pointing to your local drive.

You need to upload the image to the publicly accessible web server such as flickr or photobucket or even your own web site and then provide the url to your image there. It should have the following form:

http://(your_web_server)/(directory_name)/verito01.jpg

You also need to lose the space in the filename and make it either verito01.jpg or verito_01.jpg.

Hope this helps.

... and to think, it was a P.O.S. when listed for around $150 -- terrible looking worn barrels, frozen studio shutter, horribly worn f/ indications.

But, the glass was crystal clear, and the shutter just needed cleaning (thank god for Kroil). Pure good luck.

It's just a picture of trees.

Look in the bottom left, that highlight area is a tree trunk. The lens is just doing something funky with the "zooming" on the outside with the swirl on the inside and if you look deeper into the picture into the center the trees at a mid-distance are in focus.

I've been having a lot of fun with the 8x10 lately :D

Given some recent first-hand experience, I think I now understand what's going on here. I'm about 90% sure the orientation or ordering of the elements in the rear group of your lens is incorrect. I can't imagine you'd could get anything like this with a properly assembled Verito. Fortunately the fix is an easy one.

Ben, the rear group of a Verito is cemented and the front group is a singlet so unlikely that any glass is dis-placed. I think this may be a picture of the thought process that makes us use our Verito's in the first place.

Ah, I'd mistakenly thought the lens was based on a Petzval design.

Ah, I'd mistakenly thought the lens was based on a Petzval design.

That would be the Wollensak Vesta or Vitax. The Verito and Versar are sometimes mistaken for Petzvals as they look similar cosmetically, and both will swirl as much or more than a Petzval, but they're both single elements at the front, and a cemented doublet at the rear.

I thought the Versar was more along the lines of an extra rapid rectilinear. I know on mine both the front and rear elements have a little bit of separation around the edges indicating that they're both cemented elements. So far I haven't noticed any swirl in it, though it does go a bit soft in the corners at wider aperture settings (which is kind of nice for portraiture.)

In an attempt to keep this remotely on topic... the Verito lenses are still a bit too expensive for me, although they have been coming down in price.

Oops, my bad! Yes, the Versar is cemented doublets, front and rear. It definitely has swirl-capabilities, though.
