Group,

I have here a prototype of the Steinheil Super-Apromat 5.6/300mm prototype lens which is inscribed 180 lpm, so seems to be quite a high resolution lens.

Any further info on that? Arne?

Not much, Klaus. My Steinheil book does not mention it. There are other lenses named Apromat, made in the US, and supposedly for copy work, see:

So I assume that Apromat was the name of the reprographic machine or its company, and different lenses were sourced from a variety of lens manufacturers, including Steinheil. It is likely this was during the time when Lear-Siegler out of Santa Monica owned Steinheil.

Thanks Arne,

my lens looks completely different, though.

Klaus, no question that yours is a different lens. However, if you compare the front lens cap of your lens and the one shown in the auction link, they are exactly the same design and script. So I am pretty sure these were made for the same reprographic machine/company.
The US made "Apromat" probably won't resolve the 180lp/mm, but who knows? Unfortunately, Steinheil changed hands several times before closing, so it would be hard to find somebody with firsthand knowledge. The prewar lenses are actually much better documented, whereas the postwar literature concentrates on their 35mm production. My query here on another Steinheil lens (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?t=21004) didn't get any real answers either.

I got a question which film format it would cover. I made a crude image circle test and came to at least 300mm wide open for infinity. From that I woudl conclude that 18x24cm (7x9") format would be possible.
