Excellent - your first shot is way-better than mine. I had everything sorted, but the Quickload system - and my first shot was totally black (Velvia 100F; f22; 1/15s :) ).

How much was "book learning" versus just winging it?

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words. I don't have the instruction manual for my camera yet, so I had to wing handling the camera somewhat, which was'nt hard for this first shot because it only required focusing and locking. I have the "View Camera Basics" book by Stroebel, but I really have'nt used it yet. Really everything I needed to know about the basics for this shot I got from this site - 50% from the homepage, 50% from this forum. So thank you all for your patience in answering all my questions!
Ken

P.S. Be prepared for some stupid scanner questions next week!;)

Ken,

Also, pick up the book by Jim Stone entitled, "Using The View Camera." It's a great book.

Jack Dykinga's book is also a keeper... and it costs under $25 on the bay!

Steve Simmon's book is another one I'd recommend... easy to read and understand.

Way to go Ken, and a good close-up, never something I've done particularly well. You've already got a good reference book, but I found two of the books mentioned here to be more useful everyday references and speed my learning curve eight years back - namely Jim Stone's Users Guide to the view camera and Steve Simmons Using the View Camera.

I no longer need either and will be glad to send them to you for twelve bucks total including freight. Email me if you're interested.

Thanks, Bruce! Steve has already been helping me via email - I didn't realise he wrote the book on the subject!:)
