For fun I thought I'd make a list of photographers that:

1) Shoot California landscapes

2) Have at least "several" images of the California coast, especially the area south of South Francisco as far south as Santa Cruz. Especially interested in images of the coast area, not just the surf.

3) The final print is hand-made--digital can be in any other part, or every other part of the image-making process, but the final print is made without computer technology.

Any suggestions? Help me make my list! Web pages would be great...

Thanks,

Seems a bit specific to me. I have images of the CA coast, but not within the small section you mention. And, I print digitally, but you may not be able to tell. It's just the final result that counts....

Jim Collum and I have several images from that very specific area. However like Jeff, Jim and I print digitally. SOME of Jim's prints are pigment over platinum made from digitally produced negatives for the platinum process.

Joseph Holmes is a good candidate. His current prints are digital, but for years he made Cibachromes that were among the finest prints of that type available anywhere; I'm sure he still has some of those around. Also Cole Weston's handmade dye-transfer print of surf on the the Big Sur Coast ranks up there with the best color prints ever made at that time. Cole is no longer with us but his prints are still available through the Weston Gallery in Carmel. For B&W there's Brad Cole, Morley Bear, William Clift (who has a whole book shot in that area, just gorgeous work, all handmade B&W). And Wynn Bullock of course, though he is gone also.

If you are interested, my dad was part of a curatorial project a few years back that collected just these types of images (the Monterey Coast), so let me know if this is a serious project and I can put you in touch with him.

The DVD The roots of California Photography includes some photographers still currently working.

Chip Hooper does a lot of work on the California coast and of course John Sexton, Alan Ross, Merg Ross, Ray McSavaney, Richard Garrod, Roman Loranc - pretty much ANY of the Carmel area photographers ( most of those listed above). Geeeeeze, this list could go on and on and on...............

Thanks for the responses so far--very helpful!

Chris, I guess I was thinking of living photographers but never really considered older work--nor have I given proper thought to historical images. Food for thought! And, yes, my question is more of a “thought experiment” rather than pure entertainment--maybe something will come out of it, who knows...

Paul, I know Kerik’s work--great stuff. Thanks!

Eric, Thanks for the suggestions. Perhaps I’m not familiar enough with all of the photographers you mention but it looks like a list very heavy on Yosemite/Monterey Bay area work--I went looking for images that would fit criterion #2 (images of California coast between SF and Santa Cruz) but no luck--no doubt I need to get to know some of this work better.

Additional suggestions welcome!

You should probably look up Pat Hathaway in Monterey. Here is her website:
