Tripod restrictions... a way around?

This is more fun than reality, but in places that have restrictions on the use o f tripods, can I use a 4 legged camera support instead & beat the restriction?

my using flash bulbs at the Sydney Acquarium didn't go over well.

the sign clearly stated 'no electronic flashes' however.

Would a solid mono pod be OK? If you shoot with Provia F and push it to 400 ISO and have reasonalbe light and wide focal lenght lens, it should work well... you can always tell them it is your walking stick?

What you really need is a wheeled platform (e.g. chair) on which you can also roll your stuff around.

A friend of mine was photographying early in the morning on the Plaza Grande in a little town of Tuskany. He had made a couple of shots when this carabinieri walked to him and asked him to follow him to the police station. There he was invited to acquit the equivalent of $125 for a two hours photography permit! Of course he refused and went back to the nearby hills, quite frustrated. Luckil y, the two shots he had made where great photos. I have tried to figure out a way to shoot smoothly hand held at low speeds, and I wondered if a 4,5x6 medium format such as the Fuji 645 or Pentax/Mamiya or eve n a Pentax 6x7 could do a good job. Of course, reversing from 8x10 to medium format, and loosing all perspective control might extinguish the desire to make any photos! So the use of other films than the belowed Velvia!
