Lots of R. Adams discussion on this forum lately; however, my post deals with him only obliquely:

At the Adams Getty opening last month, Mark Klett gave a lecture on how his own work had been influenced by Adams and the New Topographers, etc.

He concluded his lecture by showing a PPoint presentation on his some of his recent work: The Third View Project. For those unfamiliar, this is Klett's follow-up to his "rephotographic surveys" of a couple of decades ago, where he and his collaborators returned to exact shooting locations of famous landscape photos, then reshot them to capture the changes made over time. Every attempt was made to shoot the scenes at the same time of day/year/weather as the originals to highlight the contrasts.

The scope of the project notwithstanding, what distinguishes it from similar projects is this: Once the fieldwork was completed, an interactive DVD and website was assembled to present the results. It allows the viewer to click on each photo, displaying each composition in sequence. All the info is here (http://thirdview.org/3v/home/index.html).

jbhogan,

Thanks for the update. I always thought the Rephotographic project was an absolutely fine documentary study. It would be kinda of cool if some of you young guns did a 2025 version.

These books are great. I have both of his works. You can spend hours looking at pairs of images discovering similarities and changes due to passage of time.
