I need a decent head for my sinar, terribly. I'm looking at the Gitzo low-profile "rationelle" series (2270M, 2271M, 2272M).

I like the idea of the quick-release plate on the 2272M, but it looks like it wouldn't be as stable as the plain mounting surface of the 2270M.

I haven't been able to find the dimensions of the mounting surface of either head.

Do you think the 2270M would be better suited to large-format shooting with a monorail system?

Any thoughts on the old 1370M compared to this new series?

Dan.
I use the Sinar P2 10x8 on the Gitzo 1370M HD Extended Platform.
In my opimiom I have the best available combination for stablility.
It cannot be used with the quick release head, and, as you say - would likely not enhance stability.

I am a big fan of the Gitzo low profile heads, being on my second and third examples.

IMHO stability is more important than quick release for LF. A big platform is a big plus. By tilting the head forward 45 degrees for screw access, it is pretty easy to get the camera on and off, esp. 4x5's.

Older heads come up on eBay regularly and reasonably priced. They are pretty indestructo, so that's where I buy them.
