Fifty-0ne available categories in the visual arts for artists, musicians, writers and performers. No fee to enter - the only requirement is that you must be a veteran currently enrolled at a VA hospital facility as an inpatient or outpatient.

The Kallitype I submitted won 1st Place:

"Hi Mr. Taylor my name is deanna(?) I'm calling from the VA I was just calling to let you know that your black and white photography 1 1st Place so congratulations and just to let you know that we will be having our where you can look at the art exhibit tomorrow from nine until four with the ceremony at 11. There also be a viewing on Friday as well from nine to one. So hopefully you can attend and congratulations take care bye bye."

Congrats Thomas! I took first place in the Color Photography category in the Washington D.C. area. Onto the National competition!

Thanks Joshua! I retrived the message too late to attend the opening but I did go the following day and found a small group of people gathered around it and interested in knowing how I made it. I typed a 200+ word description of the process on the entry form but none of that accompanied the display. It' a good thing that I put "Gold-toned Kallitype" in parenthesis next to the title. So I had a great time explaining how to make a Kallitype. One person even offered to purchase it a d another wanted to know if I offered workshops. I learned that this was the eighth VA Arts festival and that it happens at the same time each year so I plan to enter the next and the next and the...

I had an offer on my print as well however she wasn't really interested in paying much for it. Certainly not what the piece is worth. I may enter next year as well, just in a different category.

I was told wrong: It's the 32'd VA Arts Competition and not the 8th as I mentioned above. They must have meant that it was their 8th. You can see my entry and further information about the event on my blog: http://spiritsofsilver.com/blog3/
