Hi there,

I am fairly new to large format and have just purchased a Sinar F1.
I have been using a 90mm wide angle lens.
I am not really concerned about movements.
Will a 75mm wide angle lens cover 5x4?

Thanks
Phil

Modern 75mm and wider lenses cover 45 with no problem.

Depends on the design of the lens, as coverage is a function of both focal length and angle of coverage. A 75mm Hypergon will cover 8x10, while a 75mm (or 500mm, for that matter) lens designed for 35mm format likely won''t even cover medium format negatives.

If you don't need movements, make sure you get something with at least 155mm of coverage. You might want a bit more, though, as you might want movements in the future. Bear in mind that with a lens this wide, you'll probably want a center filter due to fall-off at the corners, and these filters can be expensive, ($150-300).

Hi Phil,

Here is a link to another area of this site which has a list of all the current 4x5 lenses and their image circles. At least 155mm is needed to cover 4x5. But that is without any movements. Try for 190mm as a minimum.
