Great start for this new born thread ! You made an interesting work with light making this clair-obscur contrast that in the end emphasizes your model's look, congrats !

Now that I have most of the dry plate emulsion techniques semi-functional, starting to work on raising speed. The latest batch is EI 1 or 2 or so, which is 2-3x faster than before. A quick snapshot from testing it this weekend:

A mark and a fair bit of dust from improper drying (another plate fell over against it) but I'm happy with the results so far.

Your dry plates are much cleaner than most wet plates, Robert! Nicely done, and a well-composed image to boot. The tilt of the road throws everything off kilter so well...

Thanks guys! She is only 11, so that look is only going to get worse from here. Getting harder to get her to stand still for a portrait these days.

The eye of the artist can never compete with the "evil eye" from an 11-year-old girl! A classic image, none the less... :)

Taken back in January, but only scanned and touched up this week. This is my friend Kat in the greenhouse she lives in in Taos, NM. It was my first day in town, and it was very snowy. We drank our coffee and listened to music while I set up my camera.

I like it a lot, but to me I would like to see her in her environment, at a cafe or on a park bench, etc. to give some context. Nevertheless, a lovely pose.

I've so enjoyed the portraits here for the time I've visited, some are more beautiful, more artsy, etc., but I doubt any are a truer portrayal of the subject. Bravo and congratulations!

Thank you all very much. She doesn't allow too many portraits these days... especially in large format. I was trying out the 14 inch CE for the first time and I am very happy with the results. It is definitely one of my favorite photos of the year so far.

My fiancé. We were out shooting and I had a film holder that had the dark slide slide out partially (I have since added rubber bands to stop that from happening again). Knowing that one end of the picture would be massively overexposed I just shot a little informal portrait of her sitting on a bench. I believe this was on my 210mm Nikkor lens on my Graflex Graphic View. Arista EDU 100 developed in Ilfosol.

If you switched to Toyo-View film holders that would not happen. The retaining pins on their holders actually screw down on threads and hold the pin tightly on the slide.

This is really nice. You seem to have captured the character of your sitter, which is the essence of a good portrait. I think it would make a great print, cropped to a square, just at the top of your fiancée's hair.
Alex.
