Hey everyone! This is gonna be a special post for me because: This is my very first large format picture! I've followed to forum and contributed while I could, but anything I posted was shot using my 6x7 roll film back or my Polaroid 405 back. This was my very first time shooting and developing a 4x5 negative. I have not yet done any of the film/developer calibration yet, because I wanted my first shot to be of my fiancÚ, not a gray card! I was so excited. I got my box in the mail with the paterson tank and the last few bits for developing and I couldn't wait. Bearing that in mind, it is fairly too-bright. I exposed it so that the right side (photographer's right, her left) of her hair (the brightest part of the scene) should've been zone VI. I think I over-developed. It also looks like it ended up sitting crooked in the holder at the time of the exposure.

The shot was 1/2 second at f8 on my 210mm Nikkor lens. I shoot on a Graflex Graphic View.
The film is Arista EDU 100, I developed for 5:30 in Ilfosol3 agitating with 10 inversions every minute. I used a self-mixed citric acid stop-bath (thanks Ken Lee!) and Ilford's rapid fixer. I stopped for ~0:30 and fixed for 3 minutes.

Please, any and all critiques are welcomed and greatly appreciated! I love to learn and can't wait to refine this beautiful art.

6 films in the same tray for a longish time - hence the lines (which I actually love...)

Your FO5 portrait results always look great, what kind of filtration/development do you use for this?

Here is a less flattering photo of a different sort taken with a Petzval last weekend, 9" I think, Gundlach Portrait Series "A".

Lorent, nice execution. I like the use of the prop and the subtle textures of the garden background. the glance out of the frame works well.

Laurent L
28-Apr-2017, 02:17
Thanks Nicholas, On the other hand, composing a 5x7 portrait is not so easy, this format is too narrow, I had to reframe this photo in a 4x5 ratio to make this photo look better. :)

I think that I will make a mask on my ground glass to create a special ratio, a kind of 5x6...

Oh and this is not a garden in the background, this is a Castle, the Belfort Castle which is apparently undergoing some works (hence the frames behind the head of Elise my model). :D
