Since I never do portraits, but I just happened to shoot my first ones on 4x5 over the last couple weekends, I thought I'd share probably all of what March will contain for me, haha. Ok, I may have a couple more later.

Osaka 4x5 field camera, Osaka 120mm f/6.3, Ilford Delta 100, Legacy Eco Pro "Xtol" 1:1, 68F, 10:30.

It's the one-year anniversary of my best friend adopting her dog Ru. So we decided to commemorate the day. It's also my first time shooting large format with speedlights, I'm very happy with the results.

Self Portrait
Fuji RA-4 8x10 paper negative
Developed in 2 week old
Tetenal ra-4 chems
Very basic development style - chems warmed in bucket, rotary processed on a cibachrome roller.
I used a Cokin "coffee" filter to control the blue.
By the way - I'm missing my IR/UV filter - my shirt is actually blue!!

Two very good additions this morning. Mkillmer, very cool chiaroscuro with painterly colors. Rob, that is a ridiculously cute shot, great both technically and with respect to your daughter's expression. I'd be very proud of producing either.

162236 162237

Two ‘portraits taken with Wray SUPAR Series 11 4 ¼“ f4.5 lens on a 4x5 Calumet CC400 monorail camera
The exposure was achieved by removing the “lens hood” (cap off a spray can), and then using the flash at maximum (??) – via the test button, and then replacing the lens hood. The electronic flash’s GN was recomputed to 6.25 (metric) – the aperture used was f6.35 [#2 setting}
Exposed onto unflashed paper negative, rated ISO 6 [Multigrade MGIV, Pearl - 8x10 sheet cut into 4 pieces each trimmed to fit into a 4x5 darkslide]. Developed in Jobo drum - Ilford PQ Universal for 1m.
For the record the illuminated image circle seems to be around 140mm

Very good... but I think the lens is too sharp. I once had the same issue using a G-Claron for portraits, not very nice.

What colour was the lipstick? Looks like shiny silver

Thanks DG 3313 and Dirk.

Dirk, I can see your point. The sitter, my wife, wanted a sharper portrait, after having a number of soft portraits done. This one might be a bit too sharp. The lipstick is a metallic silver / pink. She wore it on the first day we met, more than 25 years ago!

Playing with a dichromate reversal bath - I figured that the hard water stain remover from a big brand here ("<5% non-ionogenic substances" according to the label) probably contains a non-organic acid, likely sulfuric acid. It makes a very effective bleach with a bit of dichromate.

This is Fomapan 100 exposed as 100 and developed for 27 minutes in Parodinal 1+50 (3 times the recommended development time according to the massive dev chart), exposed to room light and redeveloped for roughly the same amount of time in the same developer. Better washing should clear out the yellow chromium coloration, but I kind of like it this way. Contrast and density are about right.

HP5, normal development, scanned via Epson V800. Shot on a 4x5 Calumet CC(?) monorail with some tilt. Exposure was ~1 sec. at f/11, iirc.

My wife next to the Chestatee River. This river is crowded with tubers and kayaks in the late spring / summer months, though right now it's only a few inches deep due to lack of rain.

Nice ones Robclarke! Nice lighting and subjects seem willing!

Thanks. Yes, they were patient enough for a handheld shot. I am not sure they would have coped with a tripod/dark cloth version so I am hoping this particular camera will come in useful for this type of thing.
