There didn't seem to be a still life thread for the new year, so here we go...

Alex well done! Welcome to the site. The softness of the light is great, the textures are interesting. Lots of elements working in this image!

Good work to all on this thread so far this year.

A friend challenged me to try a zone plate, so I stuck a 300mm one on my Toyo4x5. The bike is red and I used a red #25 filter so I could focus for a specific color. With 2+ kW of hot lights this is a 5s exposure on TriX, scanned from the final print.

Now I've got to identify other subjects this would be interesting with.

Yes, no problem with critiques/suggestion/remarks :)

Taija71A
19-May-2017, 07:09
This of course is only a suggestion... "Nothing More and Nothing Less". :)
--
When arranging 'Still Life' Subjects... Try using an 'Odd' Number of Objects.
Thus in your instance, you could perhaps use 3 Gourds -- Instead of using only 2.

This helps your Image from remaining too 'Static' and also creates a nice sense of 'Harmony and Flow'...
Within the Image.
--
Thank-you! Very Kind Regards,

-Tim.

That was a polaroid of the same shot. The sun was setting and turning everything golden, which is nice sometimes. I like how the softbox lights (5600K) changed the color.

my opinion:
do not worry about tiny scratches. Decide, if you want total or detail, but usually not in between.
If you chose total, hold background quiet, however achieved, or in good harmony or in very clear disharmony to the main object, but not in between.
If you chose detail, it should be interesting, eg something that nobody awaits.
If you are not yet content (only for still life): take a hammer (or in USA a gun), apply it to the object and begin again...
hope, this helps

Hi Pali,
Nice apples.
I have to agree with chassis that I like the original version best.
The revised looks a bit too light - however, an interesting comparison.

BTW -- Those look like the same kind of apple Paul Caponigro photographed in B&W for his "Galaxy Apple" ...
- my guess is he would say "go darker" !

A third like of the initial image. I would not have realised there was a cast without being advised; the extra green has brightened the red slightly and the overall image, to me, has more punch.

The differences are small enough that monitor calibration (or lack thereof) interferes with judgement.

That being said, the deeper red and green shades in the first image are more appealing... on my monitor.

Precisely neutral color balance is rarely found in nature (nor indoors either). It doesn't have to be an absolute requirement in an image.

I enjoy the flower image. It took me a while to notice the shadow bands on the table. nice color compliments I think, very spring or vacation-coastal. I like the break in texture but not color created by the vase.
I do not like the vignette / shadow at the upper left.

Too long without shooting any LF! Went out with my Korona 4x5 and some Bergger 400. I like the faster ISO--it allowed me to go for shallow DoF on this. Shot it slower with a higher f-stop too but I like this version a lot better. The lens is a Fujinon 210mm.

Souped in HC-110 dil. B. I got the exposure compensation wrong when I shot it, so developed an extra 2 minutes. I like the negs a lot--think I'll add dev time to this film in the future.

Looks great! I like the contrast and sharp focus, but with shallow DOF. It's working for me. I might have used a tighter crop and a square format. Overall, great image!

I do not like the vignette / shadow at the upper left.

I think it's from the vertical string that holds the slats in place. I'll keep an eye out for that next time.

Chassis: thanks and good call! I'll re-crop it downward. And maybe lose that bishop (I think it's a bishop...) peeking in at the left of frame there.

Thanks for the input; it puts a lot more emphasis on the white pawns, which is what drew me to the chess set in the first place. This was outdoors in a park, and when I was scanning it I thought I wanted a suggestion of the trees in the background, but they really aren't recognizable as trees and they just distract from the pawns anyhow.

I found an old projection lens and was curious to see if it could produce an image on the Chamonix 4x5. The lens has a fixed aperture of f/3.5 and a focal length of 5 inches
