View Full Version : Protective case for the 8x20 camera

Not sure should this be in this section but I thought how I made an protective case for my 8x20 camera.

My Korona 8×20 camera is heavy but it is still possible to hand carry it by the leather handle for short walking distance. Carrying it bare will expose it to scratches and knocks as it is easy to bump this big camera into walls and such.

So I went to buy a $5 foam camping mat, some Velcro straps with tape and went off to work on a DIY protective case. As seen in the video, I have the map trimmed to the required size including the corners and then add in the Velcro straps at the places where the different ends meet.

Great! I will "use" your idea for my 12x20!

Thanks,

great idea and much lighter than the heavy case my 7x17 lives in. I like the opening for the handles so you're the weight is on the handle and not the wrap.

I should ask Daniel Stone about making a case for the 7x17, similar to the ones he made for my other cameras.

Be extremely careful of the handle. Those old handles can look very good, and carry the camera many times, then suddenly they let go. Ask me how I know Luckily it happened as I picked it up off a piece of soft carpet.

Yes Jim, the old leather handle broke recently. Luckily it consists of 2 layers of leather and only one layer broke. I have replaced it and it should last for a while unless the 2 metal lugs held down by small screws give way first.

Gator makes a number of very reasonably priced "Mixer" cases that you can get at B&H:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1126496-REG/gator_cases_g_mixerbag_2118_padded_nylon_mixer_equipment.html
The 21x18 should be just about the right size. I have a 15x15 for the V8's and one a bit bigger for when I want to also carry several lenses, meter, etc.

Too bad they no longer make the Strebor cases. Two inches of dense foam padding on all sides is the optimal insurance policy against damage for a valued ULF camera that happens at the most inopportune time. Had a buddy that lost a GG when the edge of a film holder case shifted in the back of his vehicle on a photo excursion (you know how equipment piles up in a tight space) and took it out right through the soft sided cover. He did not have a spare with him and it was trip over for that 8x10. They way I look at it insurance always costs money and risk is directly proportional to cost. I personally opt to take that risk out of play but each person makes that decision independently.

Michael,

Strebor might not be making cases anymore, but Lightware is still in business, and makes wonderful cases. I have used some of them for various camera systems over the years, and have always been pleased with their build quality, fit and finish.

great idea for the case, not so much for the music track:)
I felt like I was in the club.

I agree fully with what you say. There is a lack of suitable bags/cases locally and it would be very expensive to ship them from US or overseas without knowing how well it will fit. Meanwhile this will help. You can probably see in the video that I also made a DIY GG protector too :)

If you have the ability to read a tape measure give yourself an inch on the measurements in each direction and you will be fine. The people that makes cases relate to these directives. That is what I did with my case for my 8x20 and 11x14. People ship globally every day and expensive is a relative term. Figure it out and get the legitimate hard sided case that ULF mandates because everything in this arena is expensive.

The concept and manner of construction seem adaptable to other areas than ULF photo gear. I can imagine a pack pack liner customized for large spotting scopes/mioni tripods and other types of things.

laminating loop frabric to the interior would be helpful in preserving the foam. An outer layer of heavier fabric would make this a durable case. I recognize that these additions add complexity, cost and weight.

In any case: This is a great idea and the project is well executed . . .Well Done!

I used something like this for my 10x20 camera:

Thanks ! I have just bought a big piece of thick canvas cloth today to serve as the outer layer. No idea how will I get around doing it but I do know how to sew. Probably will secure with compression straps with buckles.

Hey Pound! I would appreciate it very much if you could provide an update to this project. Did you ever figure out how to make a canvas cover?

How did it work out, and are you still using this for your 8x20, or have you found some other case?

Lets remember Pound's solution, looks good to me

My 7X17 solution was at The Container Store, I brought a tape measure, it fits perfectly and needs no foam at all

Custom made by LFPF member Daniel Stone, they are padded

I think he is still in business

My new Gator case swallows my tiny 7X17, poor fit

It works well with my 11x14 Seneca View Camera, Improved, Variation 'ebonized'

Hi Michael
the canvas cover project did not go far other than cutting out the canvas for it . I am still using this foam mat protective case and putting it on a hand pull trolley when moving around. Quick to remove, quick to put back on so I am pretty happy with it.

Pound, thanks for the update. I'm trying out a variation of your foam mat with my 12x20 but putting it in a 3oz ripstop nylon duffel that has hand and shoulder straps. Thanks, again, for your original post. Great idea and simple and inexpensive.

Just posting I made one of these camping foam cases, slightly modified for my needs so I could safely put my 8x20 Korona into the Granite Gear Traditional pack. The Granite Gear pack is perhaps absurdly wide but my god it actually fits.

Have my Korona 8x20 Panoramic View in a Gator mixer bag, including the two film holders and rear extension.
