Superb, I like both shots.
What I have also noted is that it was made with an everyday lens, not a super powered Cooke, or Voigtlander, or whatever. So, the merit is - as we use to forget - to the person behind the camera - more even possible with controlled environment and light.

Cheers,

Renato

Thank you, Renato, as far as I know, there aren't any really bad modern lenses for LF (by modern, I mean in the last 50 years). This lens is fantastic, I have it for about 15 years and I have done many photos with it. I will not change this lens for any other.

That's quite a nice image. Is the Buhl lens a modern LCD projector lens or an old slide projector lens?

I like this quite a bit as well though I wish you'd swung the lens the other direction. The in-focus strip of barn behind her is distracting for me. Swinging the other way would have kept the in-focus are other than her out of the image.

These images are so beautiful. I am going to take some time to share a few of my thoughts on the recent ones.

Renato: You captured such a beautiful moment in this one. I quite like the fact that they are not staring right into the lens which makes the moment you captured very authentic. Thanks for sharing!

Jim: That's a lovely picture and shows off the ring especially well. Love the story behind the picture as well.

Scott: Really love the 1st and the 3rd pictures in this set.

Ootsk: Gorgeous! Love the DOF.

Pfiltz: Stunning capture and very neat DOF effect which works perfectly in this image.

Pali

OK, so I decide to shoot the last two frames from a day out - the first frame I completely screwed up, because I forgot to close the shutter before I took the darkslide out.

The second one (the one above) I knew I had to get right. I knew it was going to be a longish exposure (1/15th I think), so I told my daughter to make sure she stayed as still as she could. I focused, Closed then cocked the shutter, pulled the slide and took the picture. My mistake? Instead of taking the extra 30 seconds to get the cable release, I tripped the shutter with my fingers. As soon as I hit the lever I knew that I shook the camera pretty bad.

Such a shame as I think it would have made a fantastic (& only my 3rd LF) portrait......... Sigh

Its an interesting dilemma! You want to get everything right, but (in my example at least), I have children that quickly get edgy or want to move on, so you end up rushing before they head to the next shiny thing!

This is a portrait of "Nancy", a Peruvian sheepherder's wife, camp female who takes care of all the men & more in the high Rockies. This image was taken with a historic Scovill Albion field camera, 6.5 x 8.5--with 5x7 reducing film. The image was taken, not recorded with either an original Victor Rochester lens or a Kodak Extar 152mm. This is a whole new endeavor for me, working with this camera, 5x7 film, & lenses. More than likely it was the Extar 152mm.

Sort of posed. There were 30 or 40 digital shots (and a couple glasses of wine) before this to loosen her up. But she mostly did her own thing and I was quick on the shutter. Nice thing about studio lighting is you don't have to worry about the subject being too still, so long as they stay in frame, stay on plane and you pump enough light in the scene.

A meniscus lens wide open at f/4.
You can screw the glass in the back to get overall softness, or like here in the front for sharp center going crazy at the edges.

Thank you.

I am actually not that knowledgeable about all parameters of the process, so I usually use most of the time the same process which seems to work fine:

- I develop in a Paterson tank using the holder for up to 6 sheets;
- I use 1+100 dilution and a total of 1.2 liters to be sure the sheets are properly covered;
- No pre-soaking - I use mostly Ilford film and they seem not to recommend it;
- I agitate for 30 seconds but I don't do tank reversal - sheets tend to slip out of the holder if I do, leading to uneven development;
- I use tap water and mix cold with warm until I get to about 19.5 degrees Celsius (it usually warms up about one degree until finished);
- development time exactly 60 minutes;
- stop bath 1 minute - I use a vinegar solution;
- fixing in whatever fixer I have, I am not one to see any differences between various brands...

I am sure someone more experienced would certainly be able to improve the process, but as long as it seems to work...

- I use 1+100 dilution and a total of 1.2 liters to be sure the sheets are properly covered;
- No pre-soaking - I use mostly Ilford film and they seem not to recommend it;
- I agitate for 30 seconds but I don't do tank reversal - sheets tend to slip out of the holder if I do, leading to uneven development;
- I use tap water and mix cold with warm until I get to about 19.5 degrees Celsius (it usually warms up about one degree until finished);
- development time exactly 60 minutes;
- stop bath 1 minute - I use a vinegar solution;
- fixing in whatever fixer I have, I am not one to see any differences between various brands...

I am sure someone more experienced would certainly be able to improve the process, but as long as it seems to work...

Thanks for taking the time to do that. I've read a bit about it and your process seems to be roughly in line with what I read with maybe the exception of a mid-way gentle agitation. Living in Scotland the temperature here tends to drop by about 10 degrees over an hour 😀 So I might have to watch that!

Gordon (Milonian)

Gordon, you could fill a bathtub just enough that your tank won't float, make sure the water in it is roughly the same temperature as your solution and place the tank in - this should be getting you a fairly better temperature control. You could also similarly use one of those portable food containers - never tried thid myself, but I've seen someone recommending it.

161046 SA 90mm, 1/15s @f/11 - ditto

161044 SAXL 58mm, 1/2s @ f/16 - daylight through window

I tried playing with movements and I'm not really happy with the results for the first three. Especially my friend Nate, in the first shot there. In the GG, I had thought the exaggerated body would look good. Turns out I was really wrong. The other two just have wonky focus and poor use of framing.

I'm just glad to learn. I've gotten fast enough with operating the camera that I can trust myself with focusing on composure.

Scott, Paul: Very nice work. Skipping past the fact that both of you have the technical stuff nailed, in Scott's I enjoy the group work, the first with the four girls on the porch reminded me of Strand's famous group in Italy (too lazy to go and find its proper title), and the second image with two girls is equally appealing. And in Paul's picture of Austin, I'm struck by the lighting, the texture of the shirt, its simply a really nice portrait, and of course fun to see what Austin looks like!

First, I have to say that I wish I could shave as artistically and accurately as your subject! Good photography, something of a milestone I think.

The criticism I can recall were that her hair at the rear where the strobe bloomed over unfocused high lights were objectionable, crappy.

Yes indeed, great shot ! You managed to get a good exposure of your Astia. By the way I'd like to ask you how old was your sheet and if you exposed it considering its age or at nominal value.

Did you use a day colored light or used some filters ?

Would be glad to get an answer 'cause I've got a bunch of exired Astia 4x5 and 5x7 in my freezer...

The film expired in 2000. The seller claimed it was cold stored. I exposed as for EI 80. Looking at the slide, I think EI 50 would have been better. Shadows are completely gone and the brightest highlight--the sheen on her nose--still has room for a little more exposure. No filter. The lights were studio strobes. The original slide has a magenta cast, which could be due to film age or underexposure.

Thanks a lot for your precious answers, now I know what I have to do ! :cool:

When slides have some magenta casts it is often because of a bad storage.

Fridge is not enough to protect slides against the aging deterioration, the only proper way is to deep-freeze them in a chest freezer.

flowers can have their portrait's done too, no?
OR perhaps this flower is the true form of some person?
Or perhaps we can use this definition of portrait: "a representation or impression of someone or something in language or on film."

No portrait, I´m sorry wrong thread!

But back to people portraits now I guess =)

Thank you! Looking at the raw file up close, the scanner depth was off causing the image to be "soft". There was a lot of newton rings and an insane amount of dust. The dust is a quick fix though.

Anyway, I shot shallow, f/4.5, and used tilt on the front element. Then adjusted my focus till it was where I wanted it. The first image of my brother did not use tilt at all, just shot wide open. That was the first photo I took with my 4x5 so it was just a "hey stand there for a sec and let me see if this thing even works" shot. But its the only photo Ive ever taken of my brother so it holds a good deal of value to me personally.

Here's a mixed bag from over the years, many technical inaccuracies, but that's all just character right? These are either 4x5 shot on a speed graphic hand held, or 8x10 shot on a P2. Mix of slide and print films, mostly expired, all self developed.

I've 50 sheets of E6 8x10 & 40 of 4x5 C41 sat undeveloped so I dare say there will be more to post before long.

Nice. Do you mind me asking how long ago this was taken?

It was taken a few years ago, I did not record the date. The subject collects vintage clothing and she and I share an interest in early Hollywood style photography (i.e. George Hurrell). Lighting was achieved with a Smith-Victor photoflood equipped with barn doors to my left and a reflector to my right. We're getting together again soon to do more work in a similar theme with some of her newer finds. Our goal is not to re-create anything super-realistic which is why we didn't opt for trying to emulate a hairstyle from the period. But overall we wanted to create the "look" and I am pleased with the result.
