Very interesting process.

I assume DIY emulsion?

And nice image!

Dear Randy, it's not a DIYed emulsion.
It's a production line. The line came from the UK. So, the original sizes were 912 and 18x24.
I just got the 8x10 testing samples.
I will get new 912 samples and new holders for 912 and 8x10 soon.

Tell us more about where the coating line came from in the UK, and when.

Many of us in the UK have seen the Ilford plate line demonstrated on factory tours. The line itself is not that sophisticated - it doesn't need to be, but the coating head is.

Good job, glad to see you trying this uncommon process!

Well, this is interesting! Will the plates and holders be commercially available?

The coating line is in Tianjin, China.
It mainly produced X-ray plates for industrial metal detection of the flaws. It also produced the dry plates.

Dear Kevin, I believe the coating line owner would let the dry plates and holders commercially. He is a photographer, too. That's why he had to produce the holders same time because the dry plate photography needs more holders than the Wet plate Collodion activities.
He also bring the dry plates to pass the Metro, train and airport X-ray checking. The results are positive. The international logistics are no problem, too.
Hoping to see the good result in the near future.

8x10 is good size!

My plate holders are 5x7...:)

Yes, I suggested him to make 5x7 plates and holders although 5x7 has less users.
We also can book larger plates than 8x10 sizes.

Big glass plates weigh more.

But I am small fry so let's see what comes. :)

What is the thickness of the plates? I'm asking to ascertain if they will fit existing plate holders that were common around the early 20th century.

If these things are reasonably priced, I'm a likely buyer. I do have a 5x7, and would consider buying an 8x10 if cost was reasonable. I'm very interested in dry plate.

Dear Mike,
Smaller than 8x10, they are 1.5mm thickness(1.42mm actually).
I suggested bigger than 8x10, such as 11x14, using 2mm glass.
Don't worry about the size.
They are standard.

Interesting, thanks Pierre. I guess the coating line was made by T H Dixon in Letchworth here in the UK, they are the specialists in this field and made the coating lines for Ilford and Kentmere and presumably Kodak as well. They were taken over by Emerson & Renwick in 2002.

I don't know yet. I believe bank transferring is better.
The price of 912 is about USD30.3 per pack.
12 plates will be in 3-month promotion period.
The price of 8x10 is about USD121.20 per pack.
12 plates will be in 3-month promotion period.

The pack will be 10 plates after the promotion period.

Interested. Please post when you find out where / how they can be purchased. I'm interested in 4x5 and 5x7. Right now I coat my own plates.

the prices you have quoted are not too expensive,
in the 1980s kodak was selling 100 tmy ( 4x5 ) glass plate
they were more than $400USD ..

Dumb question: Is that a print or a scan of a glass negative?

First portrait was shooted on a light by my cellphone.
Others had been scanned by EPSON 750.

OK, but they develop to a negative, right? Not like wet plate?

I heard it would produce 912 and 8x10 recently.
5x7 must be a future plan.

Hi Pierre, I was talking to Hass from Chamonix last week and we go on the topic of dry plates. He was interested when I told him about this thread. Do you have a contact for someone at the factory that you could pass along to me? I am curious to pick some up to try out.

Yes, I knew Hass had a lecture in Hangzhou recently.
The guy has six Chamonix wet plate 8x10 holders for the usage of his dry plates.
I don't know what you wanted to try out.
I would inform him.

Come on China, keep going and carry the future of film[analogue], Europe and USA and even Japan are somehow giving up with film nowadays, please make a drum scanner and a processor that are affordable and good quality, better than flatbed scanners such as Epson and Nikon even if not as good as those drum scanners which are discontinued, but sure you can make one that can be a head above those current film and flatbed scanners and i will be always interested, also an affordable processor that is cheaper than JOBO processors but not less quality by lot.

So dry plate, then later wet plate, then more films, who knows what next, i didn't start film yet and with all what i have i don't think it will last long before i can't find things to use, i need a processor so i can develop film colors at home, i hate doing it manually by inversions same as what i do with B&W developing and i don' think i can control the temp good enough, so i need the machine, also i can't have a darkroom at all so i only depend on scanner, and nothing can beat a dru scanner and i can't find one to be shipped to my country not even any used old one, so i put hope on China to produce one affordable to buy, i am ready to pay up to $4000 if they have one, not interested in new film scanners currently available that are nearly or above $2000 already.
