I cant speak for Mac users, but for windows the underlying restriction in a 32-bit Operating System is the issue, it can't handle more than 2GB at a time. Previous experience of various work-arounds of the limititations of Windows (and there's lots of them) have not always been good, you could easily end up with corrupted data that no-one is willing to help you out with.

I would strongly advice anyone who is tempted to make use of the higher limit either to switch to Mac or wait for the 64-bit version of windows (which involves buying a new PC for most people), rather than face the potential heartache of mangled images, and possibly lost business.

On the plus side, a 2400 dpi scan of 10x8 colour film gives a file around 1.2 GB, and will yield a print over 5' x 6' at 300 dpi. just don't do too much maniplutation in CS, turn off history etc.

Well actually, Win XP Pro will handle 3GB, with an alteration of the boot.ini file:
