Last year was such a success, that we thought we would do it again!

WHO: Large format photographers

WHAT: Photography gathering: making pictures, telling lies, drinking wine, beer, and/or other fine elixirs.

WHERE: Alabama Hills, CA. Campsite coordinates: 36.620895°, -118.116395°

WHEN: May 6-7, 2016

OTHER: Bring your own cameras, film, tripods, etc. Make your own food, travel, and sleeping arrangements.

Camping is free, but sites are primitive, no restrooms, showers, etc. Plan accordingly. Other accommodations can be made in the town of Lone Pine.

This year we will camp in Alabama Hills proper, rather than in a nearby campsite. This will eliminate the caravan trips back and forth to our shooting locations. This change means we're back to primitive camping. So bring the appropriate gear. Folding Tables and chairs might come in handy if you can bring them.

A few years ago a group of us So Cal LF photographers set up camp near a cool vista point. We made photographs until it was dark, and later while we were sitting around the camp light sipping wine and/or beer, one of the photographers, Matt Blais, brought up in conversation the Kickstarter project known as, the Wanderlust Camera... Well, except for the fact that he misnamed it as the "Wildebeest Camera." Slightly buzzed, we all agreed that had the kickstarter project been named as such we all would have invested! Realizing that such a name change would never be occur, we settled on naming our campsite... An so Camp Wildebeest was born!

Here is a link to a Google Earth file (https://www.dropbox.com/s/eqksgdca07rzqj6/Camp%20Wildebeest.kmz?dl=0) showing the campsite location

We plan on hanging around the Alabama Hills area for the entire weekend, but obviously participants are free to make their own schedules.

Hope to see some new and old faces!

A 4x10 image (negative on a light table and photographed w/ digital camera then fooled with in PS) taken from my Alabama Hills camp last month. So far I have found four people out there amongst the rocks.

But it is more than a day's drive from home, so home I will stay! Enjoy!

As last year (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?121589-LF-Gathering-Alabama-Hills-CA-May-15-17), forecast shows we might have some "dramatic" clouds. :)

In case the free site at Alabama Hills is occupied by non-LF and/or camera crews, the Tuttle Creek Campground is an option. It is a BLM campground located just south of Alabama Hills off Tuttle Creek Rd, and about 4.5 miles SW of Lone Pine, CA.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Tu...8e9dede5fa9018

GPS: 36° 33.902'N, 118° 7.527'W

Cost per site is $5/night

In the Alabama Hills, it is all free, hundreds of acres of free -- camp anywhere (I would avoid setting up a tent in the middle of a road). And getting too many people these days...but still a nice place.

We're getting classic spring weather in Owens. Clouds and snow high on both mountains, and partly cloudy with scattered showers in the valley. Gorgeous lighting for photography. I arrived Thursday late afternoon drove out to Movie Road and looked for people with large format cameras and saw none.

I returned Friday and located the campsite that was listed but no one was there and there was no tents.

I started to leave and then Forrest Atkins showed up, introduced himself and said he would keep looking for others and I said I would be around making images.

Later I saw Forrest again this time with Laura Campbell, I introduced myself and told them I would be wandering around making images.

I checked back at the campsite later and still no one, so I called it a day and went back to my motel room

Got up before sunrise this morning and made an image of the Sierras at sunrise.

Packed up my belongings and returned home to Orange County.

If there was a gathering of everyone then I missed it somehow.

Maybe next time.

I had a good time just photographing. Hopefully I have a keeper from all the film I exposed.

Hi Gary,

I guess others will chime in when they can. Since I'm mentioned figure I'd respond. Seems the group gathered at the original campsite Saturday around ten or so, having arrived later than expected Friday...Some as late as midnight. A change in campsite was posted Friday evening (See #17) despite spotty internet service in the Hill's. Understand you stayed in town so not sure you saw the message? In any case sorry we missed you. Hopefully you got some keepers as it was a great time to be in the Hills.

- Cell service within the Alabama Hills can be found in most elevated locations on the east and west sides, areas which provide views of the Inyo Mountains.
- If camping, the town of Lone Pine offers free wifi along Main Street/395 corridor.
- The best cell service provider for the area is Verizon. Your results may vary (see image map for cell service locations in the Alabama Hills):

Hello all,

It was great to meet and chat with many new LF people. What a beautiful weekend. The clouds were pretty spectacular and the rain gods had mercy on us with just a smattering of drops on Saturday afternoon/eve.

I must apologize as I may have been part of the issues people had when we were not at the announced site. I must admit that I have not been able to spend much time here lately as we've been moving to a new house and did not read the original post well enough to remember the specifics of the announced meeting site. Randy and I arrived later in the afternoon on Friday and Laura was kind enough to show us a fantastic site that was quite hidden and mostly protected from the wind while still affording some great shooting opportunities. When we saw it the immediate tired reaction was "hell yes" without remembering the original instructions that Daniel worked so hard to coordinate. So for those that missed us all and to those that had a hard time connecting, my sincere apologies. I hope that you still had an opportunity to make some great images and I hope that you'll consider returning next year. I do enjoy meeting new LF friends and always learn a lot with every return.

In the meantime, here are a few iPhone shots to give you a taste of the beauty and photographic opportunities of this incredible park.

Jerry,

Sorry we missed you. I take this as constructive feedback and will try to make improvements for future gatherings. I think there are a couple things I can do to alleviate these situations. Campsites are not always guaranteed, especially at first-come-first-served destinations such as Joshua Tree and Alabama Hills. Next year I will make the following improvements to ensure that we're are able to find each other:

1. I will provide the info (including GPS coordinates) for a meeting location; such as meeting at the Alabama Hills Arch Trailhead at a specified day/time.

2. I will continue to provide GPS coordinates for our preferred camping areas, and will provide updates when changes occur.

3. I will provide information about cellphone reception when possible.

4. I will also provide two-way radio channel/frequency info when available.

Good suggestions on ways to connect.
Wonder if folks planning to attend would mind sharing phone contacts. Maybe spotty on location but possibly reachable in transit.

I hope that this is appropriate to share here as this was shot on a medium format RB67.

Being a perfectionist makes being a photographer incredibly difficult. I feel really comfortable photographing people. I consider myself a portrait photographer and am inspired by making images of people. But landscapes, that is a challenge for me. For a few years now I have been pushing myself to attempt to make a landscape photograph that I can live with and I have hated 99.975% of everything I've made.

On this trip I had the opportunity to make photographs in this beautiful place. This is the second year I've attempted to make images here. This year the clouds were incredible, the light was stunning and I really hoped to make a few images that I could live with. I don't want to make "Post Card" photographs. I want to make images that make me FEEL something. There are a lot of beautiful landscape photographs made by incredible photographers. I am trying to find my vision and my voice on the subject – and that is one of the most difficult things for me to do.

So I'm sharing for the first time one of the first landscape images from this trip. It was sunrise on the second day there and I wanted to capture the grandeur of the view, the scale of the perspective and the artfulness of the light. I'm getting closer but I still have a long way to go.

Tim, Nice. I like the low key details. feels very ritch.
I wonder how this would look printed at 5x7 ish or less on very nice paper and floating in an elegant frame with lots of breathing room.

Thank you Nicolas. I am of two minds on the size – big to show detail or small to encourage close interaction? I may have to explore a bit to determine what works. :)

Nice clouds and sky, great mountains, Tim, but if you posted it smaller I could see the whole thing at once and get a better "view" as it were of the photograph.

Hello Tim,

You've posted some lovely landscapes... despite your claim to be mostly a portrait photographer.

The compositions and tonality of the images are very pleasing.

I hope you're as pleased with your landscapes as they are beautiful !

Tim I would have to say you nailed the "landscape" and weather of all the shots you posted. They are all beautiful.

Location Maps No. 1, Owens Lake Access
Where: Lone Pine, CA
When: Weekends or weekdays after 5pm due to construction
Cellphone reception: Yes
Access: Passenger car unless muddy
Safety: Stay on dirt roads
Hazards: Quicksand, air pollution (dust), high temps during summer and thunderstorms

At Boulder Creek, exit 395. Cross the cattle guard at Boulder Creek where you'll see a dirt road on the south side of Boulder Creek. Head east on the dirt road and then turn right (south). If you've crossed the Old River, you've gone too far. See maps No. 1 and 2. Once on the lake, dirt roads criss-cross everywhere. Explore, enjoy...

Laura, thanks for posting this. Can you briefly describe what to expect at Owens Lake (what makes it a destination)? I've been in the Hills many times, it feels like it's my home away from home. Please continue to post more location info if you can.

Thanks,
Denny

Owens Lake is one of my favorite locations even to just sit and soak in the landscape. The lake offers 360-degree views and every direction is marvelous, particularly during weather. (Stand in one place and rotate your camera.) There's much to explore on the lake. Water reflections of the Sierra and Inyo, and during winter, ice ponds. There are salt formations similar to those at Badwater. Sprinklers! Algae fields that are deep pink, rose, or orange in color. And lastly, expansive cut-patterns on the lake bed (dust mitigation). Owens Lake is beautiful and surreal.

See Vogue for an article and images: http://www.vogue.com/projects/13353964/california-drought-owens-lake/

Video short (at 0:15 are thousands of hay bales placed to mitigate sand and dust impacting Keeler. The bales have instead caused mice infestation in Keeler.): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAhkAGEqn6k

Digging up an older thread, anyone thought about making this trip again around the same timeframe in 2017?

Vaughn, are you saying you will be at Alabama Hills in a week?

Vaughn
13-Feb-2017, 20:58
Yep -- don't know exactly. I might leave Humboldt County this coming weekend and make my way south and east. Depending on the weather and all, might be in the Hills this time next week for a couple days before heading further east. But I might cut east at Big Pine before I get to Lone Pine (Alabama Hills) and head over to Eureka Valley then to Death Valley -- which would put me in the Alabama Hills on the way home -- more around the first of March.

I have not checked yet -- I am assuming some difficulties and changes of plans will probably have to be made on the fly!

Edited -- seems to be open -- no closures for that road listed on the Death Valley NP site.
