Thanks to all. I agree. I intentionally didn't recompose although I knew the image would be cropped by the smaller size of instant film. I couldn't remember where the crop would take place (top or bottom) so I left it to chance.
I am often aware I don't get in as close as I should so I keep working at it by never cropping in post processing.

I am guessing this will count as still life. It was my first go with the Chamonix 45n-2 to shoot something like this. Here are the details:

Hi there folks,

Asian water chestnuts. Never saw these before in my life till a few months ago. To me they're very alien, like the face-hugger pods from the movie Alien.
HP5 plus, scanned on Epson 2450, some digital manipulation in Lightroom 5. Set up took hours because I kept knocking into it and disturbing the arrangement just when I'd focused the camera, each time. The bellows factor math also gave me some pause, but it turns out I did ok with it.

Not sure whether this really qualifies as "still life": Prince's Purple Rain LP was spinning throughout the entire 90s exposure. But I did freeze the label of the record with some electronic flash.

I was actually hoping to see some more movement myself. There were two weak constant light sources: the turntable strobe light in the upper left and the pop-up light on the bottom. I needed about 15s exposure at f/11 to record them correctly as bright lights. Adjustment for reciprocity failure of the film turned that into 90s. So whatever got illuminated by these two light sources should show movement, and it does. It's mostly visible on the bottom right of the picture.
The flash was a Canon speedlight in manual mode with a self-made snoot out of cardboard. That flash was coming from the top left. It was apparently creating a bit more light spill than I intended. I think that's why you can clearly see some dots on the edge of the platter and that area appears frozen.

If I were to take a photo like this again, I would get the flash in closer and let it only hit the record label itself, not the vinyl. Then an additional constant light source shining somewhere on the vinyl (but not the label) should be able to create a visibly blurry area and convey more of a sense of motion.

No idea where to post this, It's still life record of a book's pages, found on a 4X5 microfiche positive on clear film.

Very scratched up film, the print is from one 6.5X8 mm tiny page capture impossible to read on a light table.

Enlarged 17.5X onto 5X7 RC matte with a Leitz V35. I can read the print. The scan is poor and doesn't come close to the optical enlargement. I am sure somebody could do a better scan.

Just an oddity I wanted to try. I bought the parts fiche 35 years ago for a 1964 Datsun Fairlady Roadster SPL310 restoration. I made 400% after driving it for 5 years.

The weird thing about this car was the body was metric and all mechanicals were SAE sized. The brake cylinder repair kits were off the shelf 1 inch kits, for $2 each. I figure the drive line was made on MacArthur Plan machines and body was new metric. It looked a lot like the MGB, but both came out the same year. Bought it from a dead man's storage for $100, titled it in Georgia, traded tools to an apprentice bodyman to fix panels and paint. DIY bumper, cheap taillights. I figure $600 all in. The negative was exposed as a test for an old batch of Fomapan 100. The bookcase and photographs were handy as a subject featuring a variety of tones and fine details.

They are the Special Edition gelatin-silver photographs designated by A.A for continued production from his original negatives. All of them were made in the Yosemite darkroom by Alan Ross according to the formula Ansel and Alan worked out years ago.
The one on the right is "Dogwood" (Neg# 3-C-49, format 5"x7", lens 7" Goerz Dagor, Film Agfa S, Dev N+1, Date 1938).
Left is "Tenaya Creek, Dogwood" (Neg#1-478 ,format 8"x10", lens ?, filter K2, Film Kodak Pan-X, Dev D-23 N+, Date 1948? or 1959).

1- Get rid of the bottle... Or if you can't, bring it to the scene and change the background.
I also would choose a more "neutral" ground, as the wood catches too much attention, and it's suppose to just present the foreground elements or work as a stand for the scene elements.

A test with 2-bath Pyrocat HD to see if the approach would work. I tried it once before, but got very uneven development. This time I did a presoak of about a minute in 20C water, followed by ca. 5 minutes in bath A 1:10 and then 5 minutes in B 1:10. It worked very well indeed, yielding very evenly developed negatives with good shadow detail, a seemingly very nicely linear curve in the midtones and well-controlled highlights. I haven't been able to reproduce this success though; a second attempt with Pyrocat MC didn't work at all (uneven development, uncontrollable contrast).

Symmar-S 300/5.6 @ f/16, ca. 1 minute, green-sensitive x-ray film rated at ISO 50.

You are more likely to avoid unevenness if you add some wetting agent and use rotary development.

With some subjects (like the cloth in your photo) the unevenness is hard to detect. However, there are some artifacts on the pages of the book in both photos.

I thought about the pages, but they aren't completely flat, so I think they are actually shadows that were really there. Wetting agent is a good idea; for rotary development, I currently don't have appropriate drums that allow the use of double sided film.

Why masonite? Cheap and flat, and can be painted on one side easily? Worried about reflections back from the masonite? I've been doing a lot of thinking about still life backdrops, and would love ideas.

Specifically, I'm thinking about a miniature (3' x 3'?) painted canvas backdrop that will be nonreflective, wrinkle-free, and hopefully innocuous (yet somewhat visually appealing).

Felt like I had over-used the board, though I have another little square of wood that is in most of this whole series. Put down some cardboard. The background of any photo is one of the six things that is going to happen in a photo, whether you want it to or not. The background either supports your subject, or drains energy from it. I use the back of a canvas painting often.

Most are cell phone shots, before the bread gets eaten. I'll have to take some large format shots of loaves, after the holidays. Baking is so addictive.

Three different starters? Don't you find they mutate into the same as each other as locally-suited bacteria and yeast thrive best? I've had the same starter in the fridge now for ten or more years, usually used twice a week for small loaves, but while it's active enough it's not particularly sour.

And yes, that was a nice looking loaf... I'm tempted now to see what flour the kids have in their kitchen!

You're right, I don't taste much difference between the liquid and the stiff wheat starters, but the third is a stiff rye, which does bring something subtly different to the final bread. I have the different starters mostly to save time in the builds for different breads. We should probably not get too off topic here.

Lightbender - 'been making about 6 loaves of sourdough/wk since 'o7. Its a little harder than bread w/ commercial yeast, but nutritionally & flavor-wise, there's no comparison. breadtopia.com, thefreshloaf.com, are good. If Teresa's sight is still up, northwestsourdough.com is excellent. Jeffrey Hamelman's Bread book has been on my counter for the last couple years, used every week.

I just learned something. I have seen these wash up on beaches but never knew they were sea-animal eggs, I always thought they were of some vegetation.

Marvelous range of tones and image detail.

As composed, the various elements don't really work together. But the bread wrapped in the towel, alone, filling the frame would be gorgeous. Love the textures, of the crust and white cloth and the plane of focus cutting through the image.

Thank you, Chassis. I cheated; it's an older image from 1970! I guess the use of Plus-X sheet film is evidence. It was a wonderful film, among the many discontinued sheet films.

It is a black tee-shirt laid flat on the floor near a window. The camera is pointing straight down. 4x5 with 150mm lens. The light is natural daylight from the window. You can almost see the window reflected in the little shell on the bottom left. Hope that helps.
