I think Jan 2016 was the first month in a while that I did not post in the portrait thread. I have returned! Over the extended long weekend, I took 13 sheets of 4x5, 3 rolls of 120 color, and 6 rolls of 120 B&W. As mentioned in the "Moment of Zen.." post, I accidentally ruined the B&W, but the colors look great! (Emotional roller-coaster here).

Here's the first portrait that pops out for me. Part of the Transformations:Cosplay project - costumers in and out of their costumes, on 4x5 large format film.

Monica and Lauren, cosplaying as the Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat.

I've been playing with the Rockland Colloid dry tintype materials, and I think I'm finally getting an idea of how to use it. It's a bit finicky - and man, does the developer deplete quickly - but I'm starting to enjoy it. This was one of two plates from yesterday. Definitely underexposed (I bumped the mid tones a tiny bit in Photoshop, though this is fairly accurate in the highlights and shadows), though I'm getting a much better handle how to meter for it.

This was in a Toyo 45D with a Fuji 150 5.6 wide open for 1sec illuminated by 3,000 watts (equivalent) of compact fluorescents in a dark studio. The lights were about 18 inches from the model.

Peter:

You have captured pure love and pride in the human spirit!

Congratulations, with this image you have a masterpiece that is every bit as amazing as Eugene Smith's mother & child from Japan.

Perfection! That is all that need be said about this image.

Great job Toby!

I'm a fan of pictorialist Clarence H White. Among other hallmarks, he often had circles designed into his family photos. We have a central vac on account of my allergies and we vacuum once in a while. The hose is either trip on it and curse, or it's some shape begging to be photographed. Maybe the hose just is what it is and my mind makes it something to curse or want to photograph? Anyways, it was sitting nice last night and I posed my daughter in the photo to make it more of a photo. 8x10 B&J, Kodak 305 portrait at 5.6 for 1s, tmy2 in pyrocat hdc.

Captain of The Plan B. Calumet C1, Fomapan 400 @ 1600, Schneider Symmar-S 300mm. He wouldn't let me take a picture of his face, so this had to suffice. Definitely going to continue pushing 8x10 film--it's completely amazing.

Henry @ 5

This is Henry. He likes to ride his bike over to see what I'm doing. If I've got the Model A out of the garage, it's an open invitation. Sort of like Dennis and Mr. Wilson. He went camping for his birthday and got a bulb horn for his bike. He thinks my garage is messy. He's right.

Done with a Graflex 4X5 on Tri-X with an 8 1/4" Velostigmat that I've modified to be permanently 'soft'. More on that perhaps later.

Look at that guy. One day, 60 years from now, he will be the guy with the last running Model A. It's in his eyes.

Jim,

That's a super portrait of Henry. And I suspect it won't be many years before both you and Henry have wrenches in your hands and work together on the Model A. I hope he likes looking at a large format ground glass too. Appears to me that you have an honorary grandson. Looking forward to more portraits of Henry as he grows up.

alastair - very nice! Was that on a speed graphic, or a view camera or something else? (The Xenotar). I Have mine on a speed but it limits the close-focus distance with the rangefinder to maybe not quite that tight (will have to check).

Thanks. Its one of cheap ( got fed up loosing my Rodenstok one) Peak loupes, round one - i got that one + spare flimsier one for like 7 or 10 bucks on auction site. Ended up being my favorite, after i attached hanging line to it :)

And having one of them modern GG with frensel helps (ones from Ruby - i got another one on my 4x5 linhoff ;))

Hi Ed - thanks!, it was shot on a Technikardin - the Xenotar is one of the 'regular' 150mm F2.8 lenses. I would love to have it on something where I could have a rangefinder, but the depth of field is soooo thin at F2.8 (he said, holding his fingers about a quarter-inch apart) that I fear the rangefinder just wouldn't be accurate enough. Still, lots of fun to shoot with, and it's a real team effort with the subject and the shooter. They have to stay absolutely still, and I have to work quickly. I'll post a few more when I have a moment.

That is an exquisite portrait, Sergei. You really get some great tonality with x-ray film. For an ortho film, x-ray can give much lighter skin tones than I'd expect.

Thanks, Peter. I honestly don't think that this particular type (Kodak CSG) is true ortho, because i never seen it behave like collodion (which for me is true ortho- behavior). I keep seeing results that are freakishly close to TMax , in all the respects. Only thing i keep finding out is that every time i try to shorten development from my usual 12 minutes i get a bit iffy results in shadows. TMax for same dilution of R09 has was shorter development.
