Hey Nicolas, Liking your shot!
I was thinking this morning about shooting something very similar for myself... Basically, I am preparing the Cambo Maxiportrait with a RangeFinder & was thinking to basically do a series of portraits in identical setting for all the portraits in Photographic Typology style (similar to my Close Ones - Up Close) but with random people. Will basically try to set things up in such way that it all works with Canon Strobes so I can go around China where I live now & portrait people in front of simple white paper background.

D-tach,
What a beautiful image of a beautiful child! I really love portraits of children - we see tons of snapshots but few true portraits like this. I think it is always important to capture these more contemplative moments in their lives, as they don't spend every waking moment smiling. Very beautiful -

Thanks Mark - My sister is always disappointed that I take mostly 'non smiling' portraits of her kids :-) she prefers crappy, out of focus, phone pictures :-) I think a smile hides the real person

Sergei, that is a very deeply provoking image indeed. I haven't seen anything near this emotionally powerful on this forum, and not that often outside it either. I admire the way you've been going through this process both on a personal level and as a photographer. I wish you the best of luck.

Thank you. I am not showing yet all the portraits i made there (and around there) as part of project, still figuring out details for the presentation.
I have met amazing people (and more on the queue) that went through HSCT and other stuff. Proud that they allowed me to take their portraits.

Lana is easier for me, being wife and my model. I am yet to start shooting her with film, because it takes longer than digital and she is fatiguing really easily right now.

I love your portraits. What is your technique to get the skin smooth. Is it just make up, or lens or is it post-processed? Hope you don't mind my asking.

Thank you. its a long discussion, but basically its light (use of fill , never have harsh side lights to accentuate pores) + lens (some are hazy, some are actually soft, some i just got to play with apperture) + fact that X-ray is way softer than your typical film (annoys some people, but it works fine for what i use it for). Then if i see something i absolutely must dodge/burn or throw texture screen at - i will do it.

Wow. I'm always in awe of photographers possessing that courage to veer away from more classical portrait composition. Expecially with the amount of prepping an LF shot, i always tend to approach it in a 'safe' traditional way for fear of wasted shots. This definitely will inspire me to be more playfull with my sitters next time!

Great use of the Eidoscope, Stephane ! Makes me want to keep mine (had thoughts about selling it).
What developer did you use with Retropan ?

Stephane
24-Nov-2015, 05:53
Foma R09, equivalent to rodinal, because it is a compensating developer.
But Adriano's portrait is with fomapan 100 (rated iso 20), and developed for 16 min in 16 ml R09 at 16 degC. This sweet 16 rule is great and very easy to remember :)

i got only one, that is marked simply as *8x10 Gundlach Radar" , never occurred to me to measure FL for it, but i would imagine its 10" or 12, given "standard" nature of those.

Darlot 14" Petzval

Edit:

Here was the first one we did. I really like the setting but the pose is terrible. Is there any literature anywhere I can read on classic posing or something? I've got very little experience in portraiture.

Damn that is good. What kind of light did you have here? Afternoon light through some trees? Really lovely.

AlesGard -- The Model by the often maligned William Mortensen, first published in 1937, is still valuable. The first and the nearly identical second editions are the best. The later and somewhat abbreviated How To Pose The Model of 1956 by Mortensen and George Dunham (still published as a reprint) is less dynamic. These are not merely guides to a variety of poses, but also analyze many faults to avoid.

I actually think the first one is much more interesting. The less "posed" the better IMHO
So, nice work :)

You're doing some very fine work yourself, Alex! That was two-thirty-in-the-afternoon sunlight through the trees. I'd rather have had light overcast, but one takes what one gets...
