Since there is no current active thread for dedicating images made from projection lens, I figure I should start one. My main interests are instant film, specifically fp100c, so I guess you can see different color renditions. I will shoot in 4x5 films but I am having too much fun with instant films at the moment. Feel free to post your own projection lens pictures, or images taken from projection lens , or ask question. My apology for boring pictures though, mostly just my kid pictures.

First one off the bat that I took today is Buhl 200mm f2.5 on graflex SLR with expired fuji fp100c film. Len was designed for 35mm ektagraphic projectors, triplet type, multicoated. While it is 3-element it is actually acts as a high resolution on large format and is a sharp len. As a triplet len it has large coverage and you can do some movement on regular 4x5 camera.

Those are gorgeously rendered. Do you happen to know if your lens is optically identical to the newer ones labeled "Rollei-Heidosmat" (instead of the labeling on yours)?

That was an 1800 mile trip and the 'A' never missed a beat.

But I don't want my love for soft focus to take this thread to an un-intended place. The sharp images from the different later triplets can be superb. And color is a treat.

Yesterday I searched eBay for projection lenses and found several. The problem is that the seller almost never says what image format they will cover. And I can only assume that most are for 35mm film - mounted slides or movie so those would not be good for 4x5" film.

Any tips on what kind of used projection lens to look for to use with 4x5" film?

LabRat
26-Dec-2017, 23:30
About what the normal FL on your format is will be OK, so for a 4X5 is 150mm or longer... Many are set up for half or full frame 35mm projection, but will cover and you might get a central sharp area for those formats, but focus sharpness will fall off, but that's what you want, right???

The thing that will come up is if there is a long hollow mounting tube behind (or in front) of the lens, that will reduce the IC by blocking the outer IC circle... Many are easy, as the tube will just unscrew, and you can then mount the front lens cell directly to a lensboard, but some will have a solid tube that would have to be cut... Notice if the item you see has a chance to mount by itself to a board (or shutter) and start from there...

The long throw/long FL projection lenses for pro-AV Carousel projectors are a good place to start...

Happy New Year!!!!

My T-Kiptagon arrived today. 175mm f/2.7 with a huge front Minifier . This is the highest focal length one of the public t-kiptagon line-up. I have four t-kiptagon (57mm, 120mm, 145mm and this one). Perhaps someday I will post a picture of them together. This focal length covers 4x5 @ 5-10ft ,and it works on graflex 3x4 SLR as well due to long flange distance. I think I will mostly shoot it on 3x4 instant film, since I have the lower focal length ones on medium formats.

Thanks for the compliment.

I've got a "new" Buhl 10" f/2.7 big barrel lens I'm working on mounting right now that I think I'm going to be disappointed with. A quick look at it on the ground glass with it shoved in a piece of wood showed immense softness at the edges even on 5x7. I imagine it'll look even worse in an actual shot than it does on the ground glass. After that, I've got a Russian triplet 365mm f/3.65 that I need to get mounted and take a look at. I'm hoping it'll cover 8x10.

I am not familiar with the Buhl 10'' f/2.7 version. I do know the 10'' f/2.8 and 10'' f/2.9 version are sharp (should be four elements). Is yours 4-element or triplet? Buhl did have two versions: 4-element hektor schematic and triplet. Also you should check to make sure if the elements are in the right place. It would help if you post some pictures, and looking forward to your sample pictures as well.

I'll try to snap a picture of the lens later tonight. The 10" f.2.7 is not a red aluminum lens for the Ektagraphic line of projectors. It's a giant dark gray-green 4" diameter cylinder the whole length of the thing. I have no idea how to tell how many elements are in it. Given how much larger it is than the red Buhl 229mm f/2.5 that I had briefly (returned to seller, internal elements rattled), it clearly was intended to project a much larger transparency.

I have just figured out how to put the Bausch & Lomb 5.25" Super Cinephor, a monster theatrical movie projection lens, onto the Plaubel Makiflex Standard. IT FITS AND FOCUSES PERFECTLY. Ten pound lens. F2! Perfect for Makiflex. Presently held to Plaubel board with gorilla tape. LOL But not out to infinity, very close-up only. About 18"x18" area image in proper focus. Amazingly lovely bokeh. :) Should work well for very tight portraits. The Makiflex excels at fashion and portraiture according to Plaubel. Rear of lens barely fits into Makiflex Standard body. It's HUGE. Will not fit Automatic model Makiflex, due to cables, smaller throat

Taken in my backyard, on our new lower deck. So enjoyable! :)

It's a petzval projection lens from a magic Lantern. The brand is Emil Busch Rathenow and it's a mod. W. They come in various sizes but all are the same diameter so they Can fit in a brass sleeve. The coverage on mine seems really large for such a short petzval (180mm= 7").

This is a fascinating thread. I pickup up, several years ago, some projection lenses, one of which looks to have potential. It is marked Ernst Leitz GmbH Wetzlar Hektor f=17.5 1:2.5 but is not designed to fit the Rollie 2 1/4 projector as far as I can tell. I have no idea what it was used for or how old it is since there is no serial number that I can find. I have a Technika V board drilled out to its maximum size i.e. to the light baffle ring, and the lens fits loosely so will need some heavy gaffer tape. I will see what the image looks like, and the coverage, on my 5x7 Linhof Kardan Bi's ground glass.

That looks really Nice! I recently bought another one that's like 8" but f5 but that's actually a camera lens ( it has a Waterhouse stop slot). It swirls wat more than the Busch one and does not cover as much.

Those hektar lenses are cool, 175mm should cover 4x5 and maybe 5x7 for close portraits.

Canon 120mm f/1.4 . Lens work on 4x5 but I do not have time to mount it on the board yet. I mainly use it on smaller format for Bokeh .

Sorry I have been away for so long. Rest assure I have been busy shooting and testing lenses in the background, although setting and building two 3d printers have been taking a lot of my times, and too many other projects. Anyway here are some recent prints for my Schneider medium format/full frame lenses

I realized this is an old thread but I would love to know more about the Rollei projector lens Heidosmat 150/2.8 that -88- posted in the first thread. If anyone actually owns this exact lens I'd like to see pics of the lens, as well as how you mounted it.

I modified quite a few lenses recently and for large format are 170mm f/2.7 (kollmorgen) petzval and 175mm f/2.7 isco t-kiptagon double gauss with modified apertures and 3d-printed parts . they cover 4x5 @ infinity .

In bright key sun I can shoot J Lane EI 2 glass negs, at 1/125, which is the top speed of Makiflex Standard. Here a 9x12cm glass plate is loaded, this will be 9x9cm on 9x12cm material. These happen to be Voigtlander plate holders, I have many kinds.

Camera mounted and balanced on Manfrotto Monopod, ready to shoot. It's a GOOD workout to carry this beast around. Monopod a necessity I think as I get older.

Bokeh and DOF/"look" is amazing. This is a theatrical projection commercial 35mm and 70mm commercial motion picture type. This lens will focus out to about 25 feet, enough for my uses. Intend to do some portraits soon.

I used JB Weld metal epoxy to glue the lens to a board with correct size hole. This lens will fit on Makiflex Standard, but not on Automatic Makiflex deluxe model.

But the central dot is out of focus.

Thanks for confirming that. I'm a bit forward focused, so I will repeat the test. I'm confident I can get a better result. Time to get out the groundglass back and magnifier as a double check. I used a double sided Linhof plate holder, with spring loaded pressure plate.

It took four exposures (film is 25 years out of date!) but at least now I now know the correct longish exposure.

Developing by inspection by safelight is very fun for me. I just bought fresh Ilford Ortho in 4x5 and 8x10.

That isn’t a film holder, it’s a glass plate holder and that isn’t a pressure plate, it’s a spring loaded spacer so it can also accept sheet film. That ejector lever is there to get the glass plate out without scratching the emulsion. It also ejects sheet film.

First test roll of hand spooled 1992 vintage 70mm Kodak 400 Tri-X Professional Unperfed film. Rated at EI 400, extremely dark stormy rainy day on my back deck. Camera was Plaubel Makiflex Standard, lens is Bausch and Lomb Super Cinephor 159.1mm F2.0. A movie theatre projection lens intended for projecting 35mm and 70mm movie film in cinema houses. Film back is Graflex RH-50 18 shots bulk loaded. Film processed in D23 1:1 12 minutes at 74F in single reel Paterson dev tank. RC 8x10 print Arista #2 Matte developed in Multigrade. Omega DII laser aligned 180mm black Rodagon lens. Camera was handheld at the Makiflex Standard's top speed of 1/125. I really like the "look" I am getting with this extremely unusual lens. It's quite a heavy rig so I get a gym workout to boot. I am really diggin' all this 70mm stuff at this point. 18 6x7 exposures fits into two Vue-All 70mm pages when cut into threes.
