I decided to do some 4x5 today, but lacked a model so I ended up using a tape measure and some guesswork to do a self-portrait. As I was developing a pair of negatives, our member of parliament (we have a federal election next month) knocked on the door. I knew him long before he first was elected, so I invited him into the darkroom and he watched while his handlers fumed outside. He stayed to see the negatives come out of the tank, and that might just have been the best part of his day (he does 200 doorsteps a day at 2 minutes each!)

Thanks Adam! My subjects are authors, editors, and artists, and most of them are not used to being in front of a "pro" camera. That plus usually I only have a few minutes, and that I don't necessarily know them, and that I can only afford 2 sheets per person, add to the challenge. Chris is someone I know for a few years and he is quite a character, so I am glad that his personality shines through in this one.

Fritz,

Your daughter is lovely, however the lighting and pose in this shot are pretty unflattering. Nothing wrong with a high key shot, but the angle of the light seems to be entirely from the side, which is not typical beauty lighting. The pose seems very awkward too, with her arm seemingly jutting out of her left ear. This is just my opinion however.

To expand on the this a bit more - the angle of the light is way too low and throws an unnatural shadow of her nose in an upward direction across her face - that is unpleasant. Look up examples of high key portraits online, or potentially butterfly lighting as well, for a better approach. Leave out any hand/arm in the pose until you get your basic lighting technique down with a simple pose.

140989
In this diagram, note how the key light is directly in line with the subject's nose, and above the level of the eyes (it doesn't quite show that, but trust me).

Glad to help; just ask for feedback as you have just done; most are too polite to offer unsolicited constructive feedback as it could get taken wrong. Mortensen's "Pictorial Lighting" would be a good resource for lighting options. You should be able to get a used copy for not much. With a large beauty dish, it would be possible to light her nicely with just one flash. Part of what's great with LF is digging into history and seeing how things were done so well in the past.

Your daughter looks like a great subject. Without the arm that would be a charming portrait.
My first thought was that the print needed to be printed darker or perhaps at a lower grade.
If you were going for high key, I would suggest a plain top so that the eyelets don`t offer dark distractions.
The lighting is upward and that is usually an ominous or scary lighting position.
I hope we can look forward to a series as she grows up, like the way "Scott--" has done with his son and daughter.

Dear djdister, jp and cowanw,
Thank you very much; that has been exactly the helpful comment I have been hoping for. In fact, I felt there´s something wrong about that photo, but I was unable to see what it exactly was. The upward lightning is obviously my fill flash - I put it there, because my key light - the 600Ws flash with giant beauty dish- came from the upper left side. This fill flash position was ether totally wrong or the fill flash way too strong - or even both. I asked my daughter to support her head with her arm, because it seemed to be the only way to prevent her head to get out of the shallow depth of field as she couldn´t stop her head moving. I will try to do the some photos with a different lightning following your advice.

With my daughters, I usually get less cooperation as the day wears on; come evening they are tired and less cooperative. They can be motivated to hold a pose and cooperate with a bribe such as dessert.

Yes bribes are sometimes necessary. We were at an art fair and decided to get a tintype of my two nieces, 5 and 7. Well the first two shots were underexposed and to get the kids to sit for a third exposure we had to buy them tee shirts. Worked like a charm.

This is my son George posing for me. I trying out HC110 as a new standard developer and I'm pretty pleased with tonality of this image although flickr tends to over sharpen everything and make images look rather 'spiky'.

"Freeze, dad!" ;-)

Really nice! The plain background and the isolating powers of the AE make the dad pay attention to what's important. A picture of parenting as much as a photo of a child.

I felt like shooting a sheet of film last night so I could have a full combiplan tank for developing. FP4+ isn't quite fast enough for my "Mortensen basic" hot light (brooding lamp with a CFL in it), so I underexposed it knowing it would be the moody and darkish sort of thing the pictorialists did 110 years ago. I used my speed graphic at 1/10th sec and f4.5 with a 9" Gundlach Hyperion lens. It's not anything prizewinning, but I'm pleased with it.

Chris
PS Jesse - stunning!

This post should be on September. Not on top of new October thread !
Do not know who is doing such moves, it is not acceptable !!!
I have asked for my contribution on opening october portraits 2015 to be deleted in sign of total disagreement.
This has to be said, read and well known by each LFF member.

Mark is a purveyor of the finest junk, vintage records and books this side of Bass Strait. A wildly entertaining character and I very much enourage you to check out his shop in the small country town of Sheffield nestled beneath Mt Roland in North West Tasmania if you ever get the chance.

Unfortunately I was running out of daylight and it started raining just out of this shot, otherwise I would have tried again (bad development) but it still came out nice in my opinion and he was stoked.

This one from a wetplate session a couple weeks ago. It is part of a series i'm developing about 'First Generation French-Filipinos'. Shot indoors with 8 cfl 5500k, 135w Please note that that big swat of blackness is not intentional, It's a novice booboo caused by a dark red antique 'malle de voyage' not registering in collodion (well, not getting enough light also). The mother and daughter were delighted by it just the same so i'm not complaining. :-) Wetplate collodion on aluminum, 5x7in. CZJ Tessar 300mm, f4.5 full open at 11minutes.

Thanks for positively egging me on! I've been shooting wet plate an average of 3 days a week since i started this collodion journey more than a year ago. It's more for the reason tha i hate the idea of mixed collodion getting expired than anything else. (i'm a cheapskate!) Here's another one from the same shoot: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7L4VwADz9Xo/Vi6VroFp0uI/AAAAAAAAD4M/CrLjAskghfk/s512-Ic42/cathy%252520sto%252520nino%252520%2525281%252520of%2525201%252529.jpg

Excellent portrait, Ding! The practice you've been getting is reflected in this image!

I'm curious as to how you combine being a cheapskate and a wet plate shooter; I'm seriously interested in collodion, but I haven't found a way yet to make it very affordable. What are the corners you've been able to cut without getting into problems?

VERY excited today....
I have this awesome Gandolfi Universal 4x5 camera - I have this maybe even more awesome ancient Ross lens....
Some time ago I then got the only handmade custom back for roll film ever made for Gandolfi...

But I got that thought: Wouldnt it then be able to use for Polaroid film?
Tried it today, and it Works like a charm!!
Awesome on top of awesome.... I now have a new favourite camera set for my portraits... :)

..and now with a couple of first results...
