Shot on Agfa G+ Xray film, so also posted in the X-Ray thread.

Second attempt @ISO 50 (100 was just too thin I found) rodinal 1:100 7.30 mins in a JOBO 2840 tank (the 2830 tank really scuffed the previous negs - though slightly less so using 160mm Vs 240mm from the first attempt)

So first usable portrait on 10x8 - Symmar 360mm f/11 1/10s

Ha ha. Not much of a portrait. The pose is my wife leaning against a sliding glass door so her head won't move for four seconds. But it is the very first portrait I have done all by myself with wet plate in Bangkok, so a happy milestone for me. This is quarter plate (nominally 4x5) on black plastic, and the scan is not manipulated at all (it looks better with a little additional contrast, but I wanted to show what the plate looks like). It is grainless, and I'm looking forward to shooting some negatives and printing.

We're happy for you Tim! It's a good plate, considering you have to import your chemistry, and pound silver ore in the mountains of Thailand to make your silver nitrate! The exposure and development are very good. The white scum around the edges can be wiped off while the plate is still rinsing, with a wet cotton ball. Go gently at first, to check how fragile your particular collodion is. Most of the time, fresh collodion is very tough, I even use a wet finger to wipe the excess silver off the edges.

Garrett's quite right, but I've found you can usually (but not always) remove those little white marks after the plate is dry with your finger or a micro-fiber cloth of the sort used to clean eyeglasses. Of course, some people like those little imperfections as an inherent part of the wet plate process, so removing them is a personal decision...

I'm not sure this is a portrait in the usual sense. My sister will be holding a small gallery show for her pastels and the gallery requires a picture of the artist at work. So we marched out to a local park and I tried a few angles while she sketched the garden. I needed to capture both her face and the work she was doing. It turned out that the 150mm shots were the best compromise.

I really like this. Her expression is very contemplative. I hope her show though is outdoor work, or it might not make sense! I always enjoy portraits of people doing things, more-so than just being in front of a camera, usually.

Interesting, I hadn't thought of that wrinkle. What I've seen of her work is scenic, so everything should cohere well enough.

When I was 16 my hair was the longest. It was down to my shoulders in the back. I had it parted in the middle and my bangs were past my chin. The only photograph I had of my hair that long was my driver's license. I don't know what happened to it but I wish I still had it to show my daughter that her dad used to look like a hippie! ;)

Tom, the image makes me think of a Human Lion because of the extra hair and dead straight stare.

Alan, thanks! I have taken A LOT of photos in the last couple months for these two projects, and I'm afraid that I'm going to get yelled at for monopolizing the thread!

So ... in risking that, here's a new one. Also taken with the Cooke PS945, Portra 160

****
With my 4x5 on the tripod which I carried on my shoulder, I was strolling around this huge hall full of Science Fiction and Fantasy writers doing mass autograph, just to see if there were any photo opportunities. I set up the camera and halfheartedly did a wide shot. Then I heard a voice said, "Why don't you take a picture of me?"

After some introduction and pleasantries, I took this photo of Ms. Cynthia Felice. She is rather proud of her golden hat. The room is reasonably dark and I asked if she could hold for a 1/4 second, and she said with a twinkle in her eyes, "but why, of course"

For the "Worldbuilders of SF&F" project.

In direct contrast to bracan's avant garde images, here's a more traditional headshot of a photographer friend. A group of us rented a local studio and combined a happy hour with a headshot exchange. I couldn't resist, and took my Toyo 4x5 which was, of course, the only film camera. Sigh. This was the first time I'd pulled out the big guy with this group, and there was a lot of interest. I shoot a single frame of b&w for each person, as well as an Fuji instant so folks had something to take away. People kept taking turns with me behind the ground glass to compose, focus, etc. Some of the comments were fun, like when the concept of tilt/shift becomes literal. :-)

Too much talking. Here's Von, one of my friends:

Tom,
I bet your model likes that one!

C.

I hope so - she hasn't seen it yet, she's partying at Tomorrowland at the moment :-)

Tom, that is brilliant! Takes me to the 60s somehow, whether it's your intention or not ;) but this portrait really works!

Thanks - she wanted to try something ethnic style and I noticed that bridge while I was looking for a new location so I thought I'd give it a try. Not intentional thus ;-)

Thanks Gary

Wow D-tach I always love love love the portraits you post...really great work!! Just curious did you use camera movements or a soft focus filter to get that kind of dreamy quality?

Sergei, THANK YOU for sharing your wonderful pics, and best wishes to your wife.

Rae Bradbury - an excellent costumer and also quite a storyteller. She's doing the "plight of witches" skit in that pose.

Oh yes, the first question I asked at the interview is whether she is related to the famous author with almost the same name, and indeed they share a common ancestor a few generations back.
