O.K., I head out in the morning, driving cross country, exhibit hopping. California to Ohio and back over five weeks. I have no real plan yet but want to stop in Denver, Kansas City and St Louis. I was planning on going to LA to see several shows but just ordered the catalogues on Amazon thinking maybe it is just too damn hot down there.

If you know of any great shows--especially stuff (photography or art in general) that is at smaller venues that I might miss, please post here. I'm even bringing a bunch of work of my won with me--figured I'd clue my family in, back in Ohio, on just what it is that I do.... :)

Bringing all kinds of photo gear but I never do any serious work like I think i will when I'm traveling. Maybe fodder for Instagram, we'll see.

Might stop in Yosemite. Anyone know what is in the gallery there? Seems a little hard to discover via the Internet.

Don't have advice on shows, but will express deep and lasting envy!

Have a great, great trip.

Once you get to Ohio, I don't know where you'll be, but the art museums in Akron and Cleveland both have photography exhibitions right now.

And if you go as far East as Pittsburgh:

If you'll be anywhere near Cuyahoga National Park, give a shout out and someone might be able to meet you there to shoot. It's a great place.

Expect delays between Kansas City and St. Louis along I-70. Go to http://traveler.modot.org/map/ for up-t0-date information. Other states probably provide similar information.

Toronto is three hour drive north of Ohio... Lots of venues up here.

Consider visiting the Driftless Area (http://all-geo.org/highlyallochthonous/2010/11/the-driftless-area-fewer-glaciers-but-more-topography-than-the-rest-of-minnesota/). Stop by our small town of Winona, Minnesota to visit our modest museum (https://www.mmam.org/). Be prepared for a very pleasant surprise.

I just returned from New Orleans and discovered an amazing shop/gallery in the French Quarter. They had on display more iconic american photos and photographers than I thought possible under one roof.
Check out this list of their inventory and perhaps reconsider going to LA (that is Louisianna, not Los Angeles)

You must stop by the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum At Kansas City. This museum started to collect photography works with Hall Family Fund 5 or 10 years ago. Check it's website for current exhibition.

One day delay in leaving--stayed up too late last night and didn't want to start out groggy... :)

@Winger: I know Akron well--I grew up there. The Akron Art Museum had many great photo exhibits when I was growing up--rather astonishing how good they were when I look back. The current show, which I have not seen but which my wife has--is in many ways a review of that period. I plan on visiting when I'm there and Cleveland, too. I'm staying at a house on Smith Road but once I'm in town things get crazy with family and my schedule is not my own. I'll ping you if I get some time to myself. :)

@Jim Jones: Thanks for that. I unusually just plow ahead and see what comes. The map seems to show that most of that construction is scheduled to wrap up on June 26--I'll get there afterwards. Do you think they'll really be done by then? I'll be kleaving Denver at 6:00 pm or so, after visiting the Denver Art Museum.

@Bob Carnie: I love Toronto! Visited it when I was a kid--my Dad was really into zoos. Yours was (is?) phenomenal.

@Jac: We will actually be sort of near Winona. On the way back the kids are coming with me and the younger one is looking at colleges, one in Madison. If we continue north we'll stop by. Thanks.

@Peter: Sadly, I had planned to go to New Orleans this trip--I've never been there--but living on the coast has made me a wimp in terms of heat. Anything over 70 seems warm. Over 80, hot. Over 90 seems dangerous, and over 100 is just hard to think about.Looks like low 90s there new, but to get there....whew....I've been in forty-three states but Louisiana will have to wait another year.

@andy: My current plans have me driving right by Lawrence, in fact. I've added the show to my list of possibilities. Thanks!

@diversey: I've crossed the country by car and train every year for ten years now, driving right through Kansas City in many cases, driving near it in all cases, and only last year did I visit the Nelson-Atkins. I was amazed. How did I miss this place all this time. It is now on my "must stop at" list for any time I'm in the area.

The construction almost 80 miles east of Kansas City continues until December and perhaps around the clock. I've heard that it is down to one lane each way at times.

I saw a note somewhere that there will be a Herb Ritts exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. I'm just not sure exactly when it will close (it opened in March).

We have two universities here. Winona State and St. Mary's.
Check out Winona State's Science building, Stark Hall (https://www.winona.edu/arts/Images/atrium_lobby.jpg). It is amazing.

Gosh, what an impoverished photo. Not mine. I will make a new one tomorrow or so.

+1 on A Gallery of Fine Photography in New Orleans. We visited a number of years ago and they had quite an extensive collection. Probably 80% of the images on display, I had seen either in a magazine or photo books. The list of artist was also quite intensive, almost every artist that I had read about or come across in the history of photography were represented as well as many more that I did not know. Most of the images were traditional silver gelatin but also represented were Dye transfer, both color and B&W Carbon Transfer prints, as well as a number of other alternative process. Many of the prints on display were from the early to mid 1900's with a few from the late 1800's and a number from 1990 - 2001. I could have spent hours just roaming about but we had another couple in tow.

Royal street on which the gallery is located also has a number of other fine art galleries. Just down the street is the Rodrigue Studio known for his Blue Dog painting.

Always had a great time in New Orleans and unfortunately gain a few pounds every time we visit.

O.K., on the way, 300 miles. Went through Yosemite and ended up in Mammouth Lakes. Stopped by the Ansel Adams Gallery (can those large inkjet "Replica Prints" get any worse? Ugh!).

Also stopped by the Museum. Landscape painting. Thought it would be dull but it was in fact very cool. Here are the highlights I can share (see attachments).

#1. The docent said that this was the first image of Yosemite. Period. First drawing, painting, anything. By Thomas Ayers, 1855.

#2. This giant guest book has guest names on one side and advertisements for local businesses on the other. Look closely for your "treat."

#3. This smaller guest book they *claim* has two famous names on the pages it is open to: Albert Bierstadt and Clarence King. But I don't see them.

Very cool...

If you go through North Dakota, hit the Geographical Center of the North American Continent and visit the Prairie Village Museum. They have a nice show of images from Tillman Cranes photo workshop held in the area.

Work from Tillmans 24 inch platinum/palladium prints to straight digital. Some very good images. All are from the past five years and feature the old and abandoned farms and churches in the area.

I should have a print or two up at the Ansel Adams Gallery in the show going up in a couple of days -- up until early August. "Set in Stone" so it will be basically rock images.

Dang -- looked at the date of your post....looks like you were too early...maybe on the way back (show is up until Aug 9th).

Santa Fe is definitely worth a stop on the way to Denver. The Andrew Smith Gallery, The Georgia O'Keefe museum (has some very fine photos including the AA photo of GO & Orville Cox) & the New Mexico Museum of Art.... The A. Smith is an incredible gallery. I saw more depth in the photography than any gallery i visited in Tokyo, Paris or London.

Almost to Denver now. Hot, hot, hot. Glad I didn't head south, though I'm missing all sorts of good things in L.A., Albuquerque and Santa Fe. 118 as I went through Death Valley, 104 all through Utah. Plan to be at the Denver Art Museum most of the day tomorrow. Timed it badly--wont be able to go the Nelson-Atkins on the outbound trip (they have budget cuts are are closed Mondays *and* Tuesdays. Grrrrr. Might head to St. Louis Museum of Art. Looking for ideas between here and there.

If I was too obscure in the above post the advert in the guest book is from "C.E. Watkins" which is, of course Carleton Watkins. Doesn't get much cooler than that.

Oh, I did stop by Bishop, Ca and had a look at the Galen Rowell. haven't been there for ten years.

I am very much not a fan of Rowell but I thought I'd stop by anyway. I remember the building they are in being especially beautiful on the inside. It still is. It's a converted bank. Looks amazing. I wish I could have taken photos to share.

Rowell's work looked much better in terms of overall print quality than it did ten, eleven years ago. The prints, despite being large in size and from 35mm looked good. They are all digital now so they much have had really great scans done. It really shows. Before the larger prints were noticeably fuzzy. All-over fuzz that suggests enlarger issues rather than camera issues. Some were quite bad. All of the ones on display--there are many--looked sharp. Sort of made me rethink a bit what 35mm was capable of.

The colors were turned up even more than before, and they were turned up very high in the old versions. Super intense. I pity folks who knew this landscape only through Rowell's images. The real locations, should they decide to visit, will surely disappoint.

I asked and they said Calypso used to do the printing in the old days. West Coast Imaging does it now. (I'm assuming it was optical in the old days.)

Just thought this might be of interest.
