I just finished testing the EI for my first box of HP5. Result: box speed. I've only used Tri-X until now (EI=200). Next step is to test for the corresponding development time. Just wondering what ISO others use for HP5?

HP5+ and Acros100 are the only two sheet films that seem to be rated properly IMO.

I use HP5 at box speed 400 ISO with Pyrocat HD and find it a wonderful combination. In general I prefer slower films as I like to use slow shutter speeds but use HP5 for hand-held work with a Super Graphic.

Box speed for me too and developed either in 510-PYRO 8.25 minutes or OBSIDIAN AQUA 12 minutes (both at 20 degrees Celsius and both semi-stand). Used mainly for night or hand-held work...

EI 320 in XTOL 1:1 and EI 200 in Pyrocat HD rotary developed.

Ian, what's your development technique if I may ask? I always seem to be getting thin negatives rated at box speed rotary developed in Pyrocat HD.

I use Jobo 2000 tanks, these are pre-Rotary and I use Inversion agitation, 15 minutes @ 20ºC Pyrocat HD 1+1 to 100, continuous agitation for the first 30 seconds then 3 inversions every minute.

To clarify my earlier statement I use HP5+ at box speed in DD-X Rotary.

HC-110 is my backup, both work well at box.

Out of curiosiy, what was your testing procedure to determine EI?

Using the usual 0.1above film base plus of, I came up with an ASA of 160.

If a film has an ISO rating, that is its ISO speed. HP5 is 400. Acros is 100. Tri-X 320 is 320, etc. They are all rated properly.

EI is whatever you want. There is no standard. If you use the Zone System, for example, you try to find 0.1 above base+fog by stopping down 4 stops from metered, and that's cool, but it doesn't mean "box" speed is wrong.

in tubes, EI 250. Tray, EI 250. Pyrocat-HD, Xtol 1+1. Whatever gives you the look you're after, go for it.

I've always used practical Zone system tests, not quite the same as Ansel Adams in the Negative rather a British adaptation that probably came from Minor White. There's not really a tradition of using Densitometers in Europe I only acquired one a year ago and have yet to use it, my new darkroom's only just finished.

I use a variation of the method described by AA in his book "The Negative." I expose 4 sheets: Zone 1 (iso 400), plus 1/3 (iso 320), plus 2/3 (iso 250), & plus 1 stop (iso 200). I use a large mat board of mid-grey in open shade as my target. I leave part of each sheet unexposed to give me a fb+fog base density. Sheets are processed in a homemade slosher for 9 minutes (Ilford's recommended starting point) in DDX mixed 1+4 @ 20 deg. C. I don't waste film on under exposing unless over exposing doesn't give me a density of 0.1 above fb+fog.

You know what I'm saying, those two are the only two I've found that give me the right look at box speed (the speed listed on the box), everything else needs to be slightly adjusted. It's a preference.
