Pictorial shots of Prickly Pear cactus = Prictorialism. It's cactus bloom time in the desert. Hugo Meyer Kino Plasmat:

Seeing the title, I was assuming bad mouthing of Pictorialism. I don't think your nomenclature is going to catch on :-)

Nice photos, BTW

Thanks all. I'll have to shoot the Hugo Meyer some more, lets see, still 15min of light....poof, I'm out there!

(some time later)....and...back! Here is another shot with the Kino Plasmat, at dusk, with the light almost gone. I like the first one's lighting a little better. These prickly pears are amazing to shoot macro, so beautiful, so painful to walk among them in flip flops.

Hi Ritchie, you are right, I started this thread to be about cactus taken with soft focus. It's just that the blooms appear for a very short time, so I have to grab shots with what camera I have. These last were with a 1950 Nikkor 50/1.4, which can be a little soft wide open. But it was too bright for wide open.

Here is one I just took by dawn's early light, with a Kern 25mm 1.5 lens, more Pictorial to me. I'll get the Dallmeyer tiny Petzval out next, and I'll try again soon!

The middle one above is great. The repeating patterns. I confess I glanced at the others (remember I live in the environment of cacti) but I stopped and spent a good couple of minutes on the one in the middle. It works like an abstract. It isn't what it seems and yet, clearly, it is.

A local photographer has been giving me some of his film gear as he's not using it much any more (much of it not at all in the last 20-30). Today I received some portra160 in 120 size and I've got a TLR from him...maybe I should go hunting cactus flowers. He also gave me some Ilford Chromogenic B.W. film. I'd kind of thought to start with that, but then the cactus season will be over. Choices!
