Hi,

Not strictly large format, although the photographer is getting into large format (finally!), I thought I'd introduce him here :)

Two years ago, I visited Barcelona where I saw a stunning exhibition of hand pulled silver gelatin prints in Gothica, the trendy part of the city where the exhibitiojn took place. The images were created by Soren Berenguer, native to Barcelona through his battered Hasselblad Xpan using a combination of traditional printing and lith printing techniques, Agfa APX25; Konica IR750nm film and Kodak HIE, developed in Rodinal and printed onto Oriental Seagull & Forte papers via traditional silver gelatin and lith printing techniques. Kind of similar to my approach, except with square format, whole plate, and errr...anything but lith lol. Two years later, his handsomely proportioned book on his first love - Barcelona - his home city has arrived in a limited run. This is an intensely personal vision of this fabulous city and its less commonly perceived beauty.

One weekend, I spent a lot of time in Foyles looking through all the photographic monographs, which seem to be slanting towards inferior digital print production. A fervent European reader was so absorbed, that he knocked a few books over and one came tumbling down on top of me. I was pleased to discover that I had been hit on the head with Don McCullin's war photography tome :)

Back to the book - Barcelona Vertical is published in offset tritone - quite a rare feat in this modern era! Before I took a sabbatical away from photography, offset printing was still around (and still is...albeit more niche). Apart from photogravure, it's hard to hide the breathe of fresh air which this kind of specialist offset lithographic printed book publication unfolded when it landed on my table. If it's alright to call his first love - Barcelona - his home city which he has meditated through photography to deliver an intensely personal vision of this fabulous city and its less commonly perceived beauty.

All the images were exhibited in the same location in Gothica, and it's fascinating seeing the detail which the offset lithography brings to the printed book form. Being mostly fond of the square format, it was rather arresting to see such a bold format for a book, exhibiting the strengths of the Hasselblad Xpan in its vertical landscape format only too. It's a highly original book, and I struggle to think of many vertical panoramic full frame Xpan books printed out there.

It is available in Spain, France and Germany through major retailers like FNAC or Amazon however I don't think the UK distribution wing has got out yet (however I did lug over a few sealed copies back to the UK if anyone is interested, and they are nowhere near as expensive as Amazon!) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Barcelona-vertical-fotograf%C3%ADa-Søren-Berenguer/dp/8461723503/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1427755731&sr=8-1&keywords=barcelona+vertical

Back on topic....Soren is now working on large format photography - honestly...! He has my Wista SW at least :)

Kind regards,

RJ
