Who does platinum printing?

Can anyone suggest a platinum printer? The older threads list one individual in northern California, but his web site states that he does printing for others on ly occasionally. Does anyone do this on a full-time basis? Thanks.

Ctein. Someone seems to have erased my answer from the thread, but that's his name. Like Madonna, or Snoopy, or Buddha, I guess, except at least it's The Buddha. His book on Dye Transfer is on Amazon.com, and he has a byline on Photo Technique mag.

For most people starting out it seems that the most daunting aspect of platinum printing is coating the printing paper yourself. You can make a lot of expensiv e mistakes learning to coat the paper. Years ago you could buy commercial pre-c oated platinum papers, just like you can buy silver papers today, making the pro cess very easy. These platinum papers were discontinued ages ago, and now you h ave to coat your own printing stock.

As an alternative, you might want to contact The Palladio Co. (I don't have thei r address handy, but a search will be easy enough). Palladium printing involves the same steps, requires the same kind of negative density range, and yields pr etty much the same results as platinum. Palladium prints have a warmer look tha t some people prefer over platinum.

The Palladio Co. sells pre-coated palladium printing papers, in a variety of siz es, that will make the process as easy as contact printing with silver papers, m aybe easier. They also sell developing chemicals, kits, and other necessary equ ipment. Their catalogue, with full instructions and tips, is the best info you' ll find on the subject. Free, too.
