I'm going to be very brave and just a bit cheeky, given my newbie status, and start off this month's portrait thread. Hope that's OK!

My fourth large format photo involved a change of light from the one in my introduction thread, (south-facing windows plus a kitchen spotlight designed to stop me missing remaining crud on the washing up), the same Crown Graphic, my poor, tolerant son, HP5+ @640, Rodinal semi-stand (with some guesswork as I needed more volume but not more development, so 6ml Rodinal in 800ml water for 40 minutes):

I think I like this!

Good portrait, and nice job of shooting HP5 at 640 ISO; I didn't think it could look that good underexposed.
I may just go wild and use mine at ISO 400. :)

Not necessarily the best shot from the shoot; just the first one scanned,
but I like it. 8x10 x-ray film, 36cm Heliar, but with a layer of diffusion added
in Photoshop, so this isn't an example of what the lens does!

Main is a gridded softbox, feathered not to hit the background, hair/shoulder
light is a grid, and fill is bare bulb right next to the lens on the left, all
300WS strobes. I'm really liking what bare bulbs do as fill lights.

I guess I'm going through a Karsh phase . . .

Good thought. Thanks.

I wouldn't need to see a hand or arm, but just to have the right side more delineated, or separated from the background.
His right shoulder is nicely and subtly separated from the background, I would have liked to see that along the right arm more.
Nice look, good shot all the same.

I'm not excusing myself, but explaining:
What inspired me on these was seeing the Steichen show at the Art Institute of Chicago last month. Consequently, I'm on a Karsh, Steichen, 1930s-1950s portrait binge now. Fortunately, the cellist came to me and specified he wanted an old-style B&W portrait, shot on large format, which he'd heard I was experimenting with (how perfect!)

In our shop we have a Karsh and a Hurrell of Heifetz (not the normal Karsh one--I couldn't find it on the web), and in both cases there's a total lack of interest in detail in dark areas of dark clothing, or separation from background, which is very contrary to my own habit of detailed, open shadows. Then at the Steichen show, I saw the same thing, especially how he used bright areas popping out of total darkness, without too much regard to whatever was going on with the dark--no outlines, for instance, of dark bodies on dark fields, and absolutely NO possibility of detail in many black areas, and believe me, I looked for it.

What I did here, then, was intentional, with just a tiny bit of shoulder and hair light from directly above to separate only the top lines, but I (also) am not sure whether I overdid it or not, this being the first time I've tried it.

One thing I didn't do, which I notice in some Karsh and Steichen published work, is some very artificial retouching to outline bodies. There are traces on my negs of what you want to see, but I'm not up to that yet, though I am warming up my pencils. :-)

This picture also made a big impression on me:
http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/.a/6a00df351e888f883401a73dbd2195970d-800wi
I have never made negs that thin and detail-free! So then I started looking for those same empty blacks in Karsh's work, and they are there, too, though less than Steichen regularly did.

Steichen:
http://www.bjp-online.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Steichen-Lily_Pons-940x1172.jpg
http://www.bjp-online.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Steichen-Greta_Garbo_John_Gilbert-940x1185.jpg
https://petitemelancolie.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/edward-steichen-dancer-harriet-hoctor-for-vanity-fair-nd.jpg

One might think it's just the reproduction, but there were quite a few original prints in the show with no detail at all in the blacks, against black, in the same vein as the first link above, of Lily Pons. It really made me think about letting pure design and layout take over against information.

mdarnton - I'd suggest next time using a gridded strip box for a subject like this. You wouldn't worry about light hitting the background (from your description it's sounds like that's what you were going for) and it would also make the reflection on the cello a little thinner and less distracting. I suppose it would also have been nice to have a very slight fill on the left side of the cello. Just a suggestion :)

mdarnton
4-Jan-2015, 21:27
The main is actually a gridded 2x3 soft box, feathered to miss the background, as you're suggesting, but too wide, perhaps. I probably should burn that reflection down a bit more. . . there's detail in the neg to do it.

By the way, I also had a background light down low to put a sunburst behind the shoulders, but decided to go more Steichen than Karsh, and left it turned off.

There's a later version here where I made everything less contrasty and brought the highlights down--as it wore on me the image I put up started to feel too harsh: https://www.flickr.com/photos/michaeldarnton/16188815462/sizes/c/

axs810
4-Jan-2015, 22:59
Yeah in my opinion the softbox may have been a little too wide. Strip boxes are generally pretty thin but it would have lit the subject the same but kept a smaller/thinner reflection

Pretty please, can you tell a little more about these processes? I've spent all morning consulting the oracle (google) and haven't even come up with even a good starting point. You made such a striking print - I know the abrasion toning and screen printing is a small part of it, but wow!

Yup. Much like Mortensen did - i scavenged around and scanned quite a few things, from canvas to stained paper (artsy paper from calligraphy section in from Hobby Lobby , they got nice texture and can be stained)). So i have quite a number of "ready to go" sets , that can be printed or overlayed right away.

Not exactly 2015, but that's when I finally got around to trying to scan it. Yours truly taken in 1983 when I was much younger. I had hair color then. (At least I still have the hair, although not nearly so bushy anymore, thank goodness.) Well, it was the '80's!

I think I had bought my first LF camera within the year preceding this. It was a Wista 45DX and my lens was a Nikkor-W 210. This is when they still made Polaroid Type 52 and I got to fooling around one day with the 4x5 and a single clamp-on utility light from the hardware store. The scanner is unforgiving - it picked up the coater marks very faithfully!

Of course, a snapshot means setting up the 4x5, extend the bellow to 365mm to use the new 14" Gold Dot Dagor, and fiffle fiddle diddle. This is why I am switching to shoot color negs from slides - somehow the highlight is burned but I still like the photo a lot.

I hope there isn't a rule about more than one entry into the monthly portrait thread. I have been playing around. My first Graflex Crown Graphic had broken hooks on the Graflok back, and I had to hold the back on with rubber bands. I bought another Crown Graphic from KEH to cannibalise, but it turned out to have a Graphic (or spring) back, not a Graflok. With a set of jeweler's screwdrivers and some determination I swapped the backs, changing the ground glass only focusing screen from the Graphic to the ground glass and fresnel lens from the Graflok in addition to changing the backs. I suspect only someone who has played with these Graflex cameras will be following me at this point! The concern at this stage is that the ground glass surface that used to sit at the same plane that a sheet of film in a film holder would occupy in the donor camera is now displaced by the plexiglass fresnel lens that I have placed under it. Why didn't I think of that before spending hours making a hybrid camera? Shall I take out the fresnel, move it above the ground glass as some recommend? Use the ground glass by itself which is bound to work but will be dark everywhere except the centre, obviating the possibility of using the limited movements offered by Graflex cameras? I decided to try it out and see what happens. I found a Graflok back on the Bay all by itself so I can afford to do an experiment while I wait.
Now just to be difficult, I didn't want to stick with the Linhof 127mm lens that I got with my first Crown Graphic. It equals a 42mm lens in 35mm ('tiny format') terms and I want to do portraits. I have obtained a Rodenstock Apo-Sironar N 210mm lens and ordered a carbon fibre lens board from the Czech Republic to mount it. This should equal a 70mm lens in the tiny format, which was the minimum for portraits that I would choose in my days there. I hate doing experiments with too many variables—don't you? Thinking that a day with no film developed is a day wasted, I went ahead and corralled my poor wife into sitting in the kitchen. I took two photos, one at f16 for increased depth of field in case my fresnel lens added to the Graphic back threw off the focus, and one at f5.6 just in case it didn't. The second turned out to be just fine! Now I have to decide whether to swap to the proper Graflok back or not when it turns up in a week or so—I suspect I shouldn't mess with proper focus! Here it is, HP5+ @400, f5.6, 1/15, Rodinal 6ml in 900ml for 40 minutes semi-stand and a Hasselblad X1 scan:

Good, solid picture. I like it. You will like the 210mm focal length.

Maybe you should do some tests to see precisely where focus is sitting with things the way they are now, then decide if you need to change anything.

Yes that is a lovely photo. I wish I had a way to adapt my 300/4.5 to my Crown, but the only thing I can visualize is something that looks like a Patriot missle battery. I think that would be inviting trouble.

Thank you all for the kind re-welcome. I was a little ashamed of myself, unsure, thinking whether I even should return here after such a long pause without a word from me. So I'm happy for "you not turning your back on me". And yes, I have learned (sincerely hope so) a lesson about priorities, time...

Regarding the Xenar: both of my versions (the 135mm f:4.7 and the Xenar 210mm f:4.5) are from the 50's, and the 210mm is my most used lens overall. I just love the way it renders the image. I have several lenses with relatively close focal length, a 180mm, a 160mm and the 210mm is the one I choose most often. Because of it's character. One reason for the difference from others' experience might be, that I most often shoot it at f/8 or f/11, and more likely in the f/4.5-f/8 range than anything above f/13. I only rarely shoot any lens at f/32 or stopped down more. To me, this is the way to let the lens speak it's character, to shoot it wide-ish...

You might say, "wait a minute, Richard, aren't these fine women wearing costumes?" and you would be incorrect. These women are wearing "lolita fashion," which is more similar to punk or goth as a fashion statement, rather than costuming per se. You're welcome :-)

Both of those are really nice! Beautiful portraits. The second one looks like it has a spot light on your dad's face. Was that intentional?
I can't see the second one on the original post, so something did happen to it if you didn't delete.

Ari
20-Jan-2015, 09:19
Hi Peter,
Thank you; yes, the look is intentional.
The "studio" (our kitchen) is the brightest place in the house during the winter. But the light is not great, as it mostly comes from below, from reflected snow.
And the overall effect is usually one of mostly middle gray everywhere; rather than embrace it, I fight it.
The spotlight effect is a LR tool, an inverted ND filter that one can re-size and re-shape and then modify.
I'm not sold on it yet, and I wouldn't use it if I were shooting in different light, but it's still early in the going.

Had a bit of a session after dinner. Somehow my light box is not powerful enough for ISO 50 x-ray film and f11/f16. I get EV 9-ish and 1/2 second. Somehow that is too long for some people. They’re dithering. I think they do that more standing up than sitting.

thank you. I don't really think that 3D is truly soft focus. It actually is razor sharp and not much aberrations are going too.. It softens, much like Vitax by actually defocusing - you move rear element which effectively changes focal length of lens.
Part of softness attributes to X-ray film i use. Its fine for me and fits well into how i do like to shoot. Other folks hate it and start stripping it and moving things around. I have couple of super duper true SF ones - Imagon and Imagon-like designs, or much softer petzvals (which i might actually sell, now that i got coupe of lenses i truly wanted and these guys are sitting on shelf).

This particular Dallmeyer is mounted now onto front of Wollensak's pneumatic shutter.. Theoretically i can control aperture by it, as well as getting speeds other than 1/30 , 1/8 and T, but i never got around to fully CLA it.
But for flash it doesn't matter. I just open shutter, pop flash, close shutter. Its two wee Elinchrom quadra heads, one with gridded umbrella to light subject and another one is just bare gridded to throw spot on the wall.

And i got to remount and shoot my process Cooke's lense now - i never thought about using it for portraits for some reason :)

No, I meant the Vitax; the 3D is exactly as you say: razor sharp.
The Vitax looks great combined with X-ray film.

I am working on a series of military portraits that, while maintaining an appropriate sense of decorum, focus on conveying more of the subject's personality. This was the first in the series on large format, and my first time shooting a large format portrait in quite a while. A more detailed explanation and previous shots in the series linked below. This shot was on a Wista 45vx, Nikkor 210 @f/16, FP4+ @80. Its not the best "scan," but a preliminary until I send the neg off to my print-maker.

Evan,

It's a good LF portrait, however its not much removed from an official portrait. How about an environmental portrait, taken in the person's office or work setting?

Peter De Smidt

Nice job, Evan. I was recently reading one of Abel's books on portraiture. It was probably from the 40s. He stressed the need for camera movements for portraits, and his example was using swing to keep all of the insignia equally sharp in a portrait of a military person. I'm not suggesting that you need to do that.

Great portrait TT !
BTW, one can always "think" about quitting...
photography would not quit YOU !!!
When looking back to your past work, there is an evidence of a great difference, something is getting much fine, simply, direct and harmonious !!!
Thanks,

Curiously, a couple weeks ago I posted a "mask" portrait and it was removed somewhere else by "moderation flow".
Comment was;

I'm punching the portraits up with the polycontrast 3 setting in Onone software. I shoot HP5 8x10, develop for 4 min. in Dektol deluted 1-3 ('cause I'm lazy and learned this technique in Las Vegas in the darkroom of the Flamingo Hotel in 1967), then I fix, and my only wash is in the faucet for a while, the dry and scan on a Epson 4990. i'm really having fun looking for the glint that every one has. Tired of the digital thing and of course in my career it was all film. Great forum.

My friend Malcolm, a rustic furniture maker, at his barn workshop on the family farm in Cohasset, Mass. Only had time for a quick grab with the Crown Graphic and the light was very direct and strong at that time of day, so the interior of the barn disappears. But it captures him reasonably well.

Its same deal as with lighting orange. Dips and wrinkles are accentuated if you do not fill shadows. First rule of thumb when shooting for texture - use side lighting, and then if you want to destroy texture - front lighting. All goes from there ;) Generally speaking - females never look to have their skin texture to be accentuated ;)
