Recently got my roll of Velvia 100 film developed, scanned the shots and edited (recovering the colour punch and sharpness lost in scanning) some of them so far. Still getting a feel for the scanner, what works and what its limits are (epson v800). film holders are annoying, gotta find an alternative option.

Heres a couple of them:

Thank you. I think Astia was created for Zion :)
I also shot some E100VS, but not in Narrows. The VS colors are insane. Interesting, but still, insane.

Here's one that I shot and printed several years ago - around 2010:

A Prayer, San Francisco

http://www.spiritsofsilver.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/images/Prayers.79141554_large.jpg

This was a very long exposure on Fuji Reala in a fairly large and dimly-lit Greek Orthodox church. The photographer that accompanied me sat quietly in a pew and made no move to photograph with his camera as if the ambiance of the place was overwhelming to the point that he could only sit motionless in it. Off to a side sat a priest counseling with a parishioner in low muffled tones that were unintelligible to an on-hearer. I stood motionless next to the camera waiting for the shutter to close fully expecting a door to open, someone to stand and move about - surely a ripple to develop in the air - to disturb the flame of the candle frozen perfectly still in space. But it never happened.

Printed on Fuji Crystal Archive from a Pentax 67II negative.

Here is a car I shot on the street in Luang Prabang, Laos. Velvia 50 in a Graflex roll film holder with a Fuji 135mm. I cannot really afford color sheet film these days, so its nice to have a color option when a scene demands it, but it is clear from this and other shots that I have a light leak through the darkslide hole when the holder is in portrait. I assume its best to leave the slide in a bit?

And here is one more from the same trip. I tried and tried to get the tilt right so that the surface of the bridge would be in focus, but the small image size combined with the poor quality GG on my Ikeda, was very frustrating. If you look closely you can see that the actual plane of focus extends below the bridge, with the grass and a boat turned over on the bank quite sharp, and all above OOF. Dang!

From the first roll through my Mamiya Super 23:

http://tardis1.tinygrab.com/grabs/8afcd2507636f3b62fc21120c0776b95e0837f4fd3.png

https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7211/26780782573_6e05ffbcc3_b.jpg

This is an interesting camera. I got the body for $29; you get what you pay for, so I fixed it up best I could and scavenged/made parts for what was beyond repair. Another Mamiya Press came my way, this time with a Graflok back, so I switched that out with the Super 23's Mamiya M-lock back and sold the Press for a profit. I used the rest of my money to buy a 100mm f/2.8 and a 6x8 RB67 power back. It's a bastard child in many respects, but it's also my dream camera. Great for architecture, great for street, and great for landscapes. It's also easily hand-holdable!

Thank you Renato! I am long overdue for darkroom therapy with RA4 prints and hope to get to it soon and hopefully make the contact sheet too :) I got a large batch of Portra 160 recently and it has now become my most shot color neg film because of it. It is super easy to shoot and scans easily as you can see from the above image. Pretty happy with the film so far.

Here is the 1st scan from the roll. Hoping to finish the others soon :)

Renato, you are spot on! It's a garden at the resort we stayed in. If you look carefully, you'll notice the golf course behind the cactus to the right. The natural desert is even more beautiful and I hope to share those images soon as well. I was lucky to get a few cactus flower blooms as well. I tried out a new film today, as I discovered I had one more roll of Velvia, I had to order another E6 kit and seven rolls of film to use it all up (it will do eight films). The only slide film in stock at Argentix was Rollei Crossbird 200, which is a slide film especially good in cross-processing, but is said to be OK in E6, although somewhat grainy. The film canisters actually say 'colour negative film' and 'process in C-41' presumably to convince a lab that it is OK to throw it in the C-41. Anyway, it is a bit grainy and the colours are strongly pre-disposed to yellow and green, but a little work and I have them pretty normal. I wouldn't recommend it if you have the choice of Velvia, but since I didn't...

Thank you Ari! Not only is the ES pro holding its ground, its really starting to talk smack to the drum scanner :) There was definitely a conversation going back and forth as both the ES Pro and Scanmate scanners were making loud noises while they were churning through my recent roll.

Here is one that I tried to scan with the film border. I made my own DIY adjustable mask setup which is producing fairly clean borders.

I didn't expect to be saying this, but I prefer the Rollei film for colour rendition, but it is much more grainy than the Fuji. Oh, well, I don't expect to do any more E6 after my one remaining roll of Rollei Crossbird.

Pali,

Great shots,
What I've noted immediately: the "place" on the ground for the tractor, and the bees over the sunflowers - really nice colors on both!

Cheers,

Thank you Renato!

The sunflower field at the farm was gorgeous and there were flowers as far as the eye could see. Not only were the flowers filled with bees, there were countless butterflies everywhere but I didn't manage to get any decent photos of them because of the limited AF capability on my point n shoot Fuji. I hope to make another trip back with my LF setup and some fresh film to hopefully capture the beauty of the fields. The only problem is that this place is crowded and it's hard to get photos without people everywhere. I asked one of the farm manager if I would come early morning before they open it up to public and am hoping to get the OK from the owners. Minus the crowd, this place is a photographers dream

Pali

From a recent sailing trip. Using the Pentax 645N with the 33-55mm and 55-110mm zooms with a few shots with the 200mm prime. I feel the 33-55mm/55-110 combo has been underrated. Very sharp and useful, at least on film, and not too heavy. The below shots are all Ektar 100 with the 33-55mm @ 33mm. At the top of the rig, I actually thought I should have brought a 6x9 camera, as the view is beautiful and very detailed, while not needing too many exposures. All items must be tied to your body, though, so a large format camera with holders would have been almost impossible (!).

Hey Pali, those scans are quality, so much detail in color and clarity!

Gotta look into these drum scanners, my v800 is ok but ugh its soft and have to do some aggressive sharpening in post.
I still think i miss a some fine detail in the textures of surfaces and such, and a drum scan would be able to retrieve it.

Pali K
15-Aug-2016, 19:48
Thank you Alen! You'll be very surprised by just how much extra information there is in a negative that a drum or a high-end scanner will bring out vs. the Epson. When I first saw my film through the drum scans, I literally felt that they were completely different images that I was looking at for the first time.

Oh my gosh, Vaughn. Not here! Do you have any idea what a corrupting influence Berkeley is? I was just real lucky that my wife had a lot of scholarships, and
was left with only a 6K tab from UCB. But that was before she decided on getting another degree, then yet another. Oh well, I would have just wasted the money on more film anyway. Navigating around town is real easy for new students. The necessary pizza joints can all be detected by olfactory senses from at least four
blocks away. I'll have to catch up with you sooner or later, but right now am preparing to leave town for two weeks in the high country.

It's Mojave and not Mohave - I didn't catch that until today. Also see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mojave_Desert for a little info on this area. Today I can't believe that I drove all those miles in the Mojave on sand trails in a little Toyota Echo - 338,000+ miles and it still runs smooth and smogs. No power of course but it will quickly get-up to 80 - which is the fastest I dare to go - like nothing.

I almost didn't get the shot as I was late arriving and remember running the last few hundred yards and hurriedly unpacking the camera and tripod and looking for a composition before the light went completely out. If I had only started 30 minutes earlier I would have had plenty of time to find an agreeable composition and would have fired-off 10 exposures instead of just the one. But it does look dramatic on the big screen.

Thank you Renato! Not exactly sure but my guess is that these were storage facilities for the maintenance equipment to keep up with the gorgeous garden that's at the side of George Washington's Mt Vernon home. There were several buildings very similar to this of which a few were covered in the tour but not the ones in my picture. Others were dedicated building for things like a personal bakery, a dedicated paint maintenance building, etc.

Really amazing place that shows how much it took to run a mansion like this back in the days.

I found a photo on Google that shows the property map including the two buildings in my photo: https://goo.gl/images/uw8Cht

Thanks Pali. It was two different film exposures. I actually forgot my 2-stop GND filter at home so I bracketed some shots and also shot a couple frames with a darkslide covering up half the lens and then double-exposed it sans darkslide to give a "virtual" GND effect. The bottom has about 2-3 stops more exposure than the top basically.

Walking "Sentiero degli dei" on the Amalfi coast. Shot using Pentax 645N and 33-55mm zoom at 33mm, both f9.5 and 1/90. Scanned at 4000 dpi on a Microtek 120TF. I had to desaturate a bit, actually, as Ektar 100 + polarizer gives very saturated colors. From previous experience Ektar is almost useless with skintones, but it works with landscape, as long as there are no people close up! (posted in BW first, sorry!)

Nice - interesting how different your blues come out than mine on Provia. I have a bunch of expired stuff I'm shooting through so maybe that's why but it's a deeper blue, less cyan, even on the light table so not a scanning thing, I think.

"Fall color" is not something I am used to seeing. Down in south GA there was not much other than pine trees and saw grass. Here's some more fall color, and keeping with the 6x12 theme:

Apologies for posting a similar image, but I thought this was an interesting comparison. The day before I shot the image on the top of this page on Provia 100F, I was at the same place with my Pentax 67ii and shot a roll of Portra 160. Same viewpoint, just on 6x7 and a 45mm lens. This one I had a 2-stop GND on the lens, and of course only one exposure:

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/amicalolaer-4903ss.jpg

Lately I've been liking Portra a lot more for the DR, but still am partial to the chromes for color saturation. I know, shoot Ektar right? Well I haven't liked Ektar colors without wrenching them around a lot. The Provia 100F honestly looks more "true to life" than the Portra, which has lovely soft colors but it didn't look like that.

Bryan - you have an amazing eye for Provia. I saw you comment while I was at work and thought that the image is indeed cyan which is unusual. Came home and realized that I had the wrong color profile set in my scanner which changed the blues for sure. BTW, this is Provia 100 (not 100F) that expired in 2001. It does have a shift but it's on a tad warmer side and the blues have come out fairly normal on my rolls. I'll re-scan and post to show you the difference. Thanks again!

BTW, amazing colors on the photo of the tree looking up. Is this a double exposure as well?

Corran
24-Oct-2016, 19:47
Ah, interesting! My favorite thing about Provia and Velvia are the deep, pure royal blues that they render, which is why I noticed. I would be happy to have a warm shift on old film - I've generally seen a cyan/magenta shift in older films I've shot, or sometimes yellowish (specifically Astia goes weirdly yellow in the highlights). On fresh film I tend to favor shooting with an 81A filter - or stronger filters, B or C, for expired films.

On the tree looking up I bracketed a little bit and then I did "burn in" the highlights at the top of the tree with the other shot, which was underexposed a bit but had tone up there where the sun was shining. This is the big benefit to digital editing off scanned chromes. Still would like to try printing color (negative) film in the darkroom - bought some gear to do it but haven't been able to try it yet. Maybe next year.

Here is the next one from the same roll with pretty much the same setup. This one was taken on a 90MM lens and had a circular polarizer. Used the right scanning profile and the blue matches the film at least on my monitor :)

You'll really enjoy printing in color! I have had a few sessions with some success and it's a pure joy to see the film colors on a large print.

A few images from my first time shooting with Portra 160. All three photographs were taken with my Hasselblad 500C/M & 100mm CF f/3.5 Carl Zeiss Planar lens. The negatives were "dry" scanned via my Epson Perfection V850 Pro Flatbed Scanner. The first two images are 8x10 crops and the last the full 6x6 frame. All the images were taken at the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona. C&C welcome.

Forgot to mention: I tough about the pic of the car with reflections all over the glass, and allow me to suggest you to experiment with a polarizing filter, where you can control the amount of reflections precisely: from 1-100%. Quality filters give us a more clean result, so worth the price tagged.

Before the protest the group had a pseudo-prayer session at a local spring, where one member burned some incense. There is a Native American heritage component to this (as well as in North Dakota with the DAPL), but I can not vouch for the person in the photo. From what I understand there is some tension about this, with regard to Native Americans vs. others who just want to act like they have Native heritage. I have no idea about the whole story on this lady, I just wanted to make photographs! :)

Yeah, what chassis said.

That said, with all of the additional math required for calculating exposure compensation with extension tubes and a long bellows extension, you might really want to think about a metering prism.

I've owned both the RB67 and the RZ67, and the RZ67 is a far more sophisticated camera. It's an amazing machine, and I really regret selling my copy.

I just got these back today after having them drumscanned. The first two are Velvia 50, the next two are Portra 160 and Pro 160NS. All are shot on a Fuji GW690II

Thank you Ken!

It was very cold this morning, and I hope it shows in the image. It was well worth the wait in the cold. I shall revisit this location when I have an 8x10 again.

Which is the true Skogshorn? The fall version looks like a mirror reversal of the winter one. Or is it the other way round? Both are gorgeous.

Well I like the BW photograph. The others have chaotic feel and harder to follow a story. well story looks like confrontation to my eye.

Back last Saturday I attended a protest against the Sabal Trail pipeline in Florida. Some images at the actual protest are HERE (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?43423-safe-haven-for-tiny-formats&p=1366463&viewfull=1#post1366463). :)

Maris, I seem to have forgotten to flip the Velvia image in my haste to post them. So the Portra version is the true Skogshorn.

Well I like the BW photograph. The others have chaotic feel and harder to follow a story. well story looks like confrontation to my eye.

Your comments for me cut to the heart of the challenge with documentary/journalistic photographs. To be honest, 3 images with little to no description on this forum don't do much to tell a story. While I do try (try!) to make images stand on their own, sometimes it takes a whole photo essay to really tell a story, or an accompanying news piece to better explain. I posted 3 images that I felt showed the tense atmosphere as one protester was arrested and another cuffed and almost arrested. The image with him shouting in my direction (he was giving his wife's phone number to call) I think was especially powerful when accompanying a news piece (it was in fact ran in Tallahassee news, both print and TV, without my permission actually).

I also yesterday shot photos at protests in Atlanta over the electoral college voting. Interestingly, I found several news stories online and most of them just had a stock image of the GA state capital, with only one story with an actual photo from the protest, which was quite mediocre IMO. I think in journalism the photos and story should work hand-in-hand. I am not a journalist, so I feel a bit differently about the whole thing. If I feel something about the topic, I try to editorialize it in my images, rather than words. I find sometimes people interpret my stance - though sometimes they think the exact opposite! It can be an interesting discussion. I just developed a bunch of 6x7 b&w images from Atlanta's protest so I might post some in the appropriate thread later this evening.

right on Bryan. I think one thing that feels ambiguous in the pipeline images is that it is hard to tell if you are in amongst them as one of them, or as one of the officers ... thses days and with the cell phone next to you, it is so expected that the images come from someone with the group.

such a small group also gives a feel of something that was staged for you to make photographs of!

I look forward to seeing more of your journalistic images =)

Great landscapes Fredrick!

Bryan; in mediocre journalism, photos always took a back seat and were misunderstood by the designers and editors. Poorly chosen, cropped poorly, printed too small, etc... It has only gone downhill since with free/cheap stock photos and journalists who are expected to produce all media rather than specialize in just photography or writing.

Here's a portrait I did in October and just got around to getting developed/scanned last month. Rolleiflex automat and Portra 160.

It's been a while since I had images to show, mostly because my Nikon 8000 scanner stopped working (again). Rather than spend another $600 servicing it, I finally found a lightly used 9000 that went for cheap because none of the holders were included. Now, I'm slowly catching up.

Apologies if this appears too big on some monitors.

Velvia 6x12, shot with a Horseman 6x12 back on a Gaoersi wideangle 5x4" camera with a Nikkor 65/4 lens in helical. Can't remember whether forum pedants class this as medium or large format anymore, so playing it safe in here.

Did you apply some tilt to get the top of those branches blurry or is that just from movement in the wind? It works quite well!

Not guilty on the tilt charge your honour, that camera doesn't even have any tilt! Just a slight breeze and a few seconds of exposure.

I've been shooting a lot of negative film in the past year, mostly as I was just not happy with scans from positives lately. The reality was I was pushing my bulbs way past their useful life, and after changing those out I can finally scan slide film properly. I've also dialed in my E-6 processing as well.

I had forgotten how fun chromes are and how good they can look. Here's a shot from a few weeks ago of some cool icicles - taken with my Pentax 67ii, 90-180mm f/5.6 lens, on Provia 100F and cropped square:

Pali, That's absolutely beautiful! Congrats on your new scanner. Velvia scanned on a a Heidelberg Tango is a great combination and always gets my attention. I like that you include the black border. The color fidelity and transitions between the shadows and highlights are what make the Tango stand out among drum scanners. Thanks for sharing.

I have had the Tango for less than a week but I can already see that it is a huge step up from the Scanmate 11000 in terms of shadow and flare performance. Very happy with it.

The visual difference between an expensive drum scan and the “old school” optical print is like night and day with the optical print being the hands down winner. Compare the drum scan above with the optical print link in post # 496.
