I have a few technical issues here, most notably the way I didn't handle his glasses, but because of
the subject, Don Flesch, the owner of Central Camera here in Chicago, I'm going to put this one up, anyway.
We took a walk around the block Friday, and my shop is just up the street, at the next intersection, so . . .
For those of you who haven't met him, Don is irrepressibly cheerful. I've been going to his store since I
hit chicago in 1984. We are both the same age, so we were both young back then.
Hoping for a scanner for Christmas, a V850, if Santa is watching. :-) My Nikon D300 doesn't cut it for 8x10 negs.

I had a visit from my 20 year old grandson a couple of days after cataract surgery. He was pocking fun at my new shades. Later I talked him into allowing me to photograph him with a lens I had just mounted on my Kodak full plate camera. The lens is a 16” Helia I just obtained, shot at F4.5.

it is always end result that counts for viewer. So as long as you get decent result in the end, and you certainly did - no amount of technical errors is important at all. Enjoy the process of imagemaking ;)

Continuing in my attempts to learn studio portraiture. I suspect most people here won't relate
to the goal, but basically I'd like to be able to do what Karsh did. Then, when I start feeling
good about that, I can move on and try to find my own thing in this genre.
8x10 Fuji Green X-ray film, 17" Copying Ektanon. Strobe lighting. One bare 6" reflector right in line
with his nose, butterfly-style, and two more bounced off the wall behind the camera to give an
overall bounced fill to the whole room.

Thank you, Ari. Yeah, Heliars are truly kings of portrait lenses. Every single one i got is just insanely beautiful, even on groundglass. I need to figure out good mounting board for V8 deardorff option for my 420 though. Right now its hacked and sandwitched and i do not dare to use it much outside of house :(

Yes, I am a little surprised, myself. Really, it's almost functioning as a normal lens. One thing I did notice was that areas that are beyond the focus point seem to lose a lot of contrast, suddenly, but I'll need more work with it to understand it, I'm sure.

NiNo, fantastic portraits! Everyone, really, this month is outstanding. Today I tried, doing everything wrong, wetplate wise. People that know me know I am very critical of the cliched girl with gas mask wetplates. But I found my old mask, from childhood, and let my daughter hold it. Ah well..... Soft focus 5x6.

Nino, I really like this portrait. I don't know how you did it, but it is like she is looking at us with an innocent eye and a not so innocent eye (her left one). Spectacular. Compelling.
My only suggestion is to darken the lower part of the photo, especially her right arm that leads the eye out of the picture. It is the only distraction in an otherwise brilliant composition.

It's very hard to get the look you are getting with collodion. Not enough range and/or the light strength falls off too fast. But you're doing great with film.

Oh no, i am not going after same look with collodion, i really like what Alex (and other Alex) does, and what Shane posting in Bastards gallery. I am just struggling to get process down with artificial light for wet plating. Its winter ;) getting darker sooner here in Dallas.

Ari: I think it was Charlie Brown (or Snoopy) in the Peanuts cartoon who said "Curse you Red Baron!" Well, curse you Ari with your commercial photography background and wonderful photography! Or, more seriously, another batch of wonderful portraits. And if you do more images with Richard, make sure he doesn't run out of mustache wax... (And it was fun saying hello when you were in NY for the Photo Expo.)
Thank you, Peter; sometimes, I too, curse the commercial background. I feel as if I've traded creativity for repeatable results, or it feels like I've been taking the same photo for 20 years, just swapping equipment.
It was very nice meeting up in New York, I just wish there had been more time; the place was so busy.
I'd like to do another photo with Richard using the borrowed Cooke XVa, hopefully in a week or two.

I'll guess that the green cast is on purpose to help overdefine the statement the people are making in the first place.

Ha ha, no. The color cast means that I am still struggling with color correcting Portra neg. I have just switched from Provia, which generally is much easier to color correct, to neg film, for the dynamic range etc. purpose.
Anyway, I tweaked them a little. Comments are always welcome so thanks!
Your thoughts, Richard?
This was just a levels layer and a curves layer. The levels were pulled to balance the histogram, and then the middle slider was moved to taste. The curves layer, I did a slight upswept curve on the green channel to try to tame a slight magenta shift in the highlights, and a tiny little adjust on the red and RGB curves. It's not necessarily perfect (2 minute edit); I mainly trying to visualize the brick tone and whites in the background to match real life - since I don't know these ladies' actual skintone, I'm guessing on that.
Also of course the raw scan will have more latitude and such, compared to the jpeg.

When doing a color correct in Photoshop, couldn't you sample what should be a neutral tone from the image (like the skull on the shirt, or some concrete) and then let PS adjust the color balance?

Dan, I tried that a few times, and it didn't work for me on this image. Usually I do have better luck. BTW, besides that I suck at color correcting neg film, yesterday was the absolutely "golden light" all day, which means that it's orange cast all the way "in real life."
I do the same thing with LR/PS, but with digital only - I've never edited film scans in LR, for whatever reason.
Dan - good question. I use a black/white point selection to perform that kind of color correction in my initial scanning, usually. The WB tool in LR has a "neutral color" dropper, but I've never used anything like that in PS myself...
Using the W/B point selector here gives me a warmer image. My original edit may be a bit cool, or just really neutral. This is of course the subjectivity of color negative I guess...
125345
EDIT: Richard, maybe that second image is more like what you saw, considering your comment about golden light? I was probably trying to edit too neutral, which is natural considering I wasn't there and didn't see the light myself! I would likely blend the two images in PS 50/50 to get a final image, if this were my image.

Don't want to hijack the thread too much more, but the light is definitely more similar to your 2nd image there, BUT not what I want :-) What I currently show is close to what I want with some more tweaking.

Agree the white balance/neutral tone selection does not always work, or it doesn't render the colors the way you saw or want them. Sometimes it does provide a good color balance reference point...

Hey Hey, I have been using Vuescan for 10+ years, but since switching to color negs, I have been struggling with the color balance. Finally, I opened the Silverfast SE CD that comes with the Epson V700 and tried their "NegFix" with builtin profile for the Portra 160VC, and...

Not bad! It needs more tweaking but clearly much closer to the goal without any work than the Vuescan version!
Very nice, I like the colors in that scan.
Personally I tried Vuescan and didn't like it.

Nice work.
I found that the negafix Portra 160VC works really well if not better for Portra 400 and Ektar 100. But I still flip the dials with the negatives to figure out which one I like the best. Sometimes Epson scan really nails the colors I'm looking for. I certainly wish there was a bit more consistency with scaning negatives.

We have the chickens for eggs not meat. A fox will probably enjoy them about the time they get to the age of not laying, if raising chickens works the way it did when I grew up

"Daughter with Olivia" is not only a superb image, it gave me quite a laugh. As a grandfather, I could see the image as the start of a conversation:
Her: "Grandpa, I'll give you this chicken if you buy me a pony."
Me: "Of course! I have my credit card. How many ponies do you wish?"
I've managed to avoid such situations with my own grandchildren, but at times it has been difficult for me.
Keith
Thanks Serge, but I was very disappointed in the results. I've done better. Exposure was a bit hot and the rim lighting from behind really destroyed the hair, which I could see in front of me while setting up the lighting. Got some distortion in the arms too, for not having the right lens. I picked this camera up a year or so ago, and only have one lens for it. Development was so so as well.
Overall I rate it a C-
Thanks.

One other off-the-cuff 8x10 shot from yesterday. This was haphazardly done with a squirming 3-year-old on slooooow CDU II duplicating film. Rated at ISO 3 (it was a little underexposed) and developed in E-6 (I used an 85B filter):

I can tell by the way she holds it ;) It's inconsequential though - it's a great portrait! I like how you chose the plane of focus.
Yeah that's the first thing I noticed as a musician, she's switched it up. Bow goes in the right hand, violin in the left.

Sergei, I'd agree with you regarding the light from the left and the general composition. But holding the instrument like that kinda ruins it for me because it looks so awkward. But in principle it's such a great image that it would be worth to re-shoot. Did you use a portable flash unit for it? Then it would be easy.

I've seen so many photos of non-players holding violins in strange ways that I'm immune to it now.
Yeah that's the first thing I noticed as a musician, she's switched it up. Bow goes in the right hand, violin in the left.
Now you mention it...it's actually not what triggered me; it's the way she grips both the violin and the bow. For violin (or viola) players, I suppose it's something we always notice, willingly or not. But like mdarnton, I've become immune to it and I certainly don't mind. It's just a nice extra if someone happens to get it right.

Regarding hands.. Guys, don't forget that there are plenty of left handed people around. Or, as i am - ambidexterous, who don't care which hand to use
Ah yes, but violin players never mirror - I think the 'left-handed' violin players (i.e. those who hold the bow in the left and the violin in the right hand) can be counted on the fingers of one hand - left or right, you choose ;)

It is not a common practice to play backwards as a violinist. I do know one bluegrass player who does.
The violin would have to have the strings & bridge on backwards. As far as I know the sound post & bass bar are not reversed so the tone probably suffers a bit.

Thank you. Nope, she is int. I borrowed violin from friend for it.
This makes me wonder what the point of the photo is then. Obviously it is not about her. This in turn means it must be something that the photographer wants to express, but I cannot detect it. It is a "moody" photo of a woman with a borrowed violin sitting in a forest. This has an element of bizarre entertainment I enjoy, but is probably not intended.

I know. It doesn't have naked body parts, its not street snapshot and it doesn't have straight on full face. It does get confusing in modern world.
However it also took reaction out of quite a few people. Commanded them to look. Got them to think :) Got them to look again. Violin for non players have certain associations, so is forest , so is general female form :) So are diagonals in the picture, general moodiness of lightning.
If it weren't so cold , we probably ended up shooting it as originally intended - in wavy dress and then it would be completely off balance.
So, usual Zen question:
If leaf falls in the forest and there is no one to hear it - does it make sound? What if there someone to actually listen to those?
PS: i am not snapping, btw ;)
