Not experienced with lighting I'm curious:
Some of the portraits show what look like square highlights in the eyes, even outdoor shots. The 2008 image is lit by the sun off to the right but the eyes show highlights facing the camera and possibly angled from above. 1999 looks like the sun is behind them but there is clearly additional light to fill their faces and leave highlights in their eyes.
I'm curious if the shots look like they were supported by sophisticated studio flash equipment or something simpler, maybe just a reflector?
